Rules governing war? My dear stop deceiving yourself. That's what they tell you. But when the war starts, Nobody gives two phucks about civilians. When they throw bombs, they don't care if it hits civilians or military men. If a war breaks out in Nigeria today, it will be gruesome. It will be a war of hatred and bitterness. There will be nothing like civilians, children or babies. When you go to war the aim is to destroy your enemy totally. Destroy them so much that they'll never in their life time think of confronting you anymore that's if you spare any of them. Even the press/camera men who cover wars are not safe.
there is so much hate in this your statement.

It doesn't deserve a reply.

The most annoying part of Kainene's disappearance in the story was to the fact that the war was almost over.I Still tnk of what must hav happened to her,but unfortunately there is no answer to that.

Informed by whom? Someone who didn't know the nitty gritty of the war.

If you want to really know about the war, happenings and doings, read Why We Struck by Adewale Ademoyega. He's among the coup plotters.

It is always wonderful to read/hear from the source, don't you think so?
How about reading General Alexander Madiebo's' The Nigerian revolution and the Biafra war' at least he was the second in command to Ojukwu and nearer to the victims of the genocide.

How about watching the British documentary on the biafra war, and watch how nearly 3million people died out of starvation and sheer brutality.

No, you went to read an apologist' s rendition of how they went on a killing rampage. Mind you, I have read that book too, and if that is your only authority on the civil war, then you are not fit to talk about the civil war.

You have known very little or nothing about it.

Thank God that you at least accepted that you were informed . Try reading "The last plane from Uli" by Frederick Forsyth also .
Anyway , my take is that Chimamanda had it all wrapped up in half of a yellow sun'. She tried to cover all areas of the Biafran war. Kainene's disappearance for instance represented the many whose whereabouts are (and not were ) not known . Decades after the war, we are still hearing of missing persons who managed to trace their ways home where only the aged could remember their names and no longer their faces. Another explicit attempt at capturing the mood of the war was the bombs at Odenigbo/Olanna's wedding reception . Half of a yellow sun is great work of reality not fiction !

I have read many many stories like this here on Nairaland, and I know some are exaggerated stories. I know we are supposed to learn from our pasts, but how do we move forward when people tell their children stories to make them hate and never to trust a certain people cos of what was done to them by those people's forefathers like half a century ago? How are we to love when we preach hate. The cycle will only continue.
By all means,Let the cycle continue.
The perpetrators should have thought of the aftermath of their actions.

War is an evil wind that blows no one any good.

Adewale just gave his own side of the story, and he only experienced the war in the middle belt ( Old Bendel), he didn't see what happened in the south east

I have read Dennis Madiebo's book. Including Fredrick Forsethe's Making Of An African Legend, Including Obasanjo's 'Nzeogwu', along with Wole Soyinka's The Man Died, with Achebe's There Was A country. So I know what I'm saying.

So tell me, who would you believe, the man who planned and orchestrated the coup and fought in the Biafra war, or the man who only fought in the Biafra war?

I'm sure you know Adewale Ademoyega took a very lucid shot at Dennis Madiebo? If you truly read that book, you won't be spewing all what you spewed here.

Gentleman, we are talking about what happened during the Nigerian-biafran war, the atrocities committed therein, we are not talking about the coup. Adewale gave an account of the coup and very little about the war. (the veracity of which would be a subject for another day)

Alexander Madiebo gave a full account of the happenings during the Biafra war.

Adewale was a mere soldier in the Nigerian army.

Madiebo was a commander of the Biafra army.

Who do you think would give a more better account of the suffering of the biafran people?

Wtf do you mean by Adewale took a lucid shot at Madiebo, how does it come as a basis for our argument.

Really. I'm now sure you didn't read the book cos from what I read, he gave lucid details about what transpired before, during and after the war.

Adewale was a mere soldier in the Nigerian army.
He was a major! Not a mere soldier. He was among the few who mustered the balls to do what needed to be done in a country heading towards disaster!.

Madiebo was a commander of the Biafra army.
Indeed he was. He was also among the problem of the country. Never forget, Adewale also fought as a commander in the Biafra army, along with Nzeogwu. So?

Who do you think would give a more better account of the suffering of the biafran people?
Who's talking about the Biafra people here? Are the so called Biafra people the only ones who suffered during the civil war?

Wtf do you mean by Adewale took a lucid shot at Madiebo, how does it come as a basis for our argument.
It come as a basis for argument cos Madiebo like Ojukwo was paranoid. Isn't that why he (Ojukwu) ordered the execution of Ifeajuna cos he was afraid of another coup to oust him.

1)if Adewale 's version of the Biafran war was what you describe as lucid, then you need to check your dictionary for the meaning of the word lucid.

2)A Major is a soldier, Adewale was a never a platoon or even a brigade commander, he was a mere servant who obeyed instructions.

3)Adewale fought in the Nigerian liberation army as a subordinate to lieutenant. Col. Banjo. He was not one of the major decision takers or an inner caucus member.

4)Tell me another set of people who suffered starvation, mass genocide and sheer brutality during the war(smh)

5)Go and do your research.

You have absolutely no right to say what you didn't witness was exergerrated! Gosh! I'm so fucking bitter right now! Have u even picked up any literal account of the war before Or you think this is APC vs PDP were u play with people's emotions anyhow. I've read at least 4 standard local books on the war and several newspaper extracts.

While I was serving in IMO state, I met an old man nearly 90 who was partly deaf in both ears. One day I had a long chat about his experiences in the war and I cried for hours later that night! The Biafran war was fought with bitterness and hate! They were no respect for civilians at all. Even women were raped and their husbands killed if they as much as raised a finger in protest.

Pls, this isn't about IPOB or anything. The Nigerian war was evil. In a saner society, Murtala MohmD would have been tried and shot for his role in Asaba, but no he walked free. Everything is wrong with Nigeria; there's no pretending about it. You can't treat people like that and pretend like it's all over...like let's get along like it never happened. Hell no!!

Any war fought with bitterness and an aim to exterminate your enemy would never end no matter how much u try. Look at North Korea, they will never forgive US cos of the policy the later adopted in the war in other to score a quick victory; the strategy of bombing anything in sight. War is brutal and unforgiving but the sight of illiterate soldiers cutting out babies from the belly of pregnant mothers will never be forgiven. Not even in a thousand years. So don't spread your sick perspective that all was fair and professional during those dark 30 months. It's a heinious lie; even as sick as the actual atrocities of the war itself.

If you read the epilogue or should I say ,front page rather..You would see where she wrote "To Mellitus, wherever you may be"-This means her family lost someone close and they never recovered from it, because they don't know where he is till date..What she wrote is plain reality,as heartbreaking as it may seem.

Mellitus was their houseboy in real life, whom Adichie's mother adored( portrayed as Ugwu in the book)
It was the prologue actually.

I felt the same way too.

Initially I just didn't take interest in reading the book until November last year before my roommate suggested we go look for indigenous books online, so we decide to read H.O.A.Y.S first. I enjoyed every bit of the story from the first to the last letters.

Chimamanda is a very dexterous and gifted writer I must confess...
From Purple hibiscus to Half of a yellow sun, to Americanah and the Thing around your Neck. Everything was a hit #B2B...

Thumbs up to my African Daniele Steele

Where you there to witness the war? So if someone says the different stories are being exaggerated, why should you doubt. Your forefathers could have exaggerated to get sympathy and probably foster hate towards others. Whatever the case may be, the war shouldn't have happened in the first place. War is not nollywood movie where you expect both waring sides to be fair to the other. Indeed we all need to SAY NO TO WAR because when it happens, there is always no mercy.

why do you think the stories were exaggerated, did you also witness the war?

It is just like telling black Americans today to forget their history. Forget the lynching and messages from marthin Luther king Jr.

NO that is their history so this is the history of the igbo land and only a stupid child will forget it. We remember where we come from, we wear it with pride.

It didn't slow us down, it didn't weaken us, we rose above that but we remember every one we lost and we keep them in our heart.

So pls if you are not okay with us talking about it, walk away.
