Well I don't think artificial consciousness is possible... Take your smartphone for an example... Whatever you type on the message box is what you get... You don't expect the smartphone to do otherwise..But all said and done it's still just a machine performing a task that it has been designed to do, it doesn't actually come up with any new ideas of its own or do any thinking.
As every computer owner will tell you, they will blindly follow any instruction you give them, no matter how stupid that instruction. If, for example, you spend all day compiling a report and then press 'Quit' before saving, it will obediently quit and remove your report forever.

Just my theory of things.

If we look at the creation story without religious colouration, it is not different than what we are seeing now with robots.

If the Bible, for instance, says, "a day before God is like a thousand years," I won't be wrong to say it took 6000 years to create a man that was "good" with intelligence, freewill and could procreate.
6000 years from now, what/how would our robots look like?
I can see a robot with conscience.

My only issues is: let them not gain self awareness cos then, the humanrace wud be doomed.

Self awareness is one of the major attributes that characterizes such systems as an autonomous system (According to IBM). So if it does not have that feature, then its not an Autonomous system yet.

Talking about self awareness, that's one of the downsides to this robots and A.I we are talking about. I really did enjoy A.I as a course during my school days. But if these Robots become self aware of which I think might eventually happen if caution isn't taken.... then we are all done for.

Though their becoming self aware might either be for good too... we can't really say for sure how these things will turn out.
