NIGERIAN AIR FORCE SUCCESSFULLY NEUTRALISES A GATHERING OF BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS

At dawn on 28 April 2017, the Nigerian Air Force Component of Operation LAFIYA DOLE conducted an air interdiction mission on some remnants of the Boko Haram Terrorists in a village 3.42 km Northeast of Mangosum. On the previous day, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) had successfully provided air cover to troops of 27 Task Force Battalion thereby enabling them to repel an attack by the Boko Haram Terrorists. Subsequently, a NAF Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance aircraft trailed the remnants of the insurgents that attacked the Battalion to a village near Mangosum, following which the NAF conducted the air interdiction mission with two Alpha Jet and one F-7Ni aircraft. Battle Damage Assessment conducted after the strike showed that several leaders of the Boko Haram Terrorist Organization and their followers were killed during the attacks. In addition, a sizeable cache of weapons and equipment was destroyed. With the successful air interdiction, the Nigerian Air Force was able to frustrate yet another attempt by the remnants of the Boko Haram Terrorists to regroup in the Sambisa general area.

Air Strike on BHT: Military Confirms Killing of High Profile Targets; yet to get identities of Commanders Killed in Air Bombardment.

Against backdrops of reports making the rounds that Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau was seriously injured and one of his deputies, Abba Mustapha killed in a Nigerian Air force bombardment when scores of the terrorist re-grouped in Balla village, near Damboa, military authorities have confirmed that an air force bombardment killed some leaders and commanders of the sect.

Air Commodore Olatokumbo Adesanya, Director of NAF Public Relations, disclosed that “There was indeed air strike on some Boko Haram leaders regrouping and there were high value targets killed during the bombardment”.

Noting that the air strikes took place at the last Friday”, he said, “However, our intelligence operatives are yet to get back to us regarding the personalities of the leaders involved”.

Commodore Adesanya recalled a statement on the bombardment carried out by the Air Component of Operation Lafiya Dole saying “The air interdiction mission on some remnants of the Boko Haram Terrorists took place at dawn on 28 April 2017, in a village 3.42 kilometers North East of Mangosum”.

“On the previous day, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) had successfully provided air cover to troops of 27 Task Force Battalion thereby enabling them to repel an attack by the Boko Haram Terrorists”.

“Subsequently, a NAF Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance aircraft trailed the remnants of the insurgents that attacked the Battalion to a village near Mangosum, following which the NAF conducted the air interdiction mission with two Alpha Jets and one F-7Ni aircraft”.

“Battle Damage Assessment conducted after the strike showed that several leaders of the Boko Haram Terrorist Organization and their followers were killed during the attacks”.

“In addition, a sizeable cache of weapons and equipment was destroyed.

“With the successful air interdiction, the Nigerian Air Force was able to frustrate yet another attempt by the remnants of the Boko Haram Terrorists to regroup in the Sambisa general area.

AFP reports had indicated on Wednesday that Abubakar Shekau, Boko Haram’s leader has been reportedly injured and one of his deputies killed in an air strike in northeast Nigeria,

It said civilian and security sources disclosed that Shekau’s deputy, Abba Mustapha was killed in the air strike attack when two Nigerian Air Force jets bombarded fighters who had gathered for prayers in Balla village, some 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Damboa, on the edge of the Sambisa Forest, last Friday.

AFP further said, “Shekau was wounded in the bombings and is believed to be receiving treatment near the Nigerian border with Cameroon around Kolofata,”

“His deputy, Abba Mustapha, alias Malam Abba, was killed in the attack along with another key lieutenant, Abubakar Gashua, alias Abu Aisha,” the source said.

Another source who is a member of the civilian militia in Maiduguri named, Babakura Kolo, also gave a similar account, saying “Shekau was injured and a number of commanders were killed.

“Among them is his deputy called Malam Abba. They suffered heavy casualties because the bombings targeted a large gathering of his followers attending Friday prayers.”

There was no immediate comment from the Nigerian military when contacted by AFP.

3 female suicide bombers die in abortive Nigeria attack

Three female suicide bombers died when their explosive devices blew up as security operatives aborted an attack targeting a military outpost in Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno, local police said on Thursday.

The suspected attackers, with improvised explosive devices strapped to their bodies, were accosted at the gate of 195 Battalion of the army located in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, late Wednesday, said Murtala Ibrahim, a spokesperson for the police.

"The three bombers detonated their IEDs, killing themselves only, while one soldier was said to have been injured," the police spokesman said.

He told Xinhua the police anti-bomb unit personnel visited the scene and rendered it safe and restored normalcy.

The National Emergency Management Agency said the suspected bombers were teenagers.

"They were sighted trying to gain access to the premises and were shot by the security agents on guard leading to the detonation of their concealed explosives," the agency said in a statement.

Terror group Boko Haram, which is blamed for thousands of deaths and displacement of 2.3 million people since 2009, is suspected to be responsible for the attack.

Maiduguri, the birthplace of the terror group, had also served as the armed group's headquarters and spiritual base for several years until the Nigerian military cleared their largest training camp last December.

Government forces are intensifying aerial and ground patrols in the country's northeast.

Troops of the Nigerian Army on Thursday repelled Boko Haram insurgents who tried to invade Maiduguri, through Aloa Dam, a village, five kilometers from Borno capital.

Dan Hajia, a witness, told TheCable that many of the insurgents were killed.

Hajia said the attackers shot sporadically to scare residents, made use of motorcycles.

“We were fishing at Aloa Dam when we started hearing gunshots from Boko Haram insurgents. They shot sporadically in their, and approached our location, but we fled immediately we saw them,” he said.

“As we speak now, soliders are at Dalori. Many of the insurgents have been killed.”

A senior security operative, who pleaded anonymity, said since Wednesday, there had been security report about mass presence of Boko Haram fighters along Konduga, Gwambalr and Aloa axis.

He said most of the insurgents must have been killed because security personnel were prepared to take them on.

TheCable observed truckloads of soldiers moving Tashan Bama axis to Aloa general area, around 3:30pm.

The military has succeeded in reducing attacks by Boko Haram. However, the sect still carries out suicide attacks.

Earlier on Thursday, three suicide bombers were gunned down in Maiduguri.
