Peace distant family, im writing here because i am stuck. I am an "Afrikan American"(Descended from those taken from Africa. My mother's family is from South Carolina and Virginia while my father's migrated from Haiti in the 1800's. I did a dna test with hopes in finding my origins and i found it but what in the world do i do now? My test shows 86% Afrikan 74% Southwest Nigeria matching the Yoruba people and 12% Senegal Mandinka. I really would like to learn more and connect with my people but how do i begin? Also do i look like a Yoruba man to you? Curious, let me know. Thanks

You are most likely Muslim. To connect with your African spirit if that is what you intend, foreign religion like Islam and Christianity need to be moved aside, especially since you are more Yoruba

Start by making Nigerian friends and asking about Nigerian especially yoruba culture. You could go to Nigeria if you want

I have been doing a lot of talking but honestly it seems like when I ask a cultural question Nigerians tend to get tense. Makes one say hmm lol

I wasn't born a Muslim so in my household we had certain beliefs that i know were different than let's say "white folk" so I would like to definitely understand where it came from. You know? You do look Yoruba. Let me ask, which test of yours indicated 74% south western Nigeria, the Y-DNA paternal test or mt-DNA maternal test?

It was the general one. The haploroup test brought African for my paternal and American Indian for my maternal but the autosomal is 86% African with actually 76%(74% was my mistake) SW Nigeria

Thanks, I've seen many Yoruba that are like twins to my family. Yes, i will look for a culture center and research as much as possible. Im currently looking for a friend to build close bond with who wouldn't mind teaching me the customs of our people. Thanks again
