The requirement for bishop and deacons or overseers in the congregation in 1Timothy 3:1-9; Titus 1:5-9 shows that it was a position exclusively for men
The oversight of the congregation back then was by men not their wives were involved for those married. Read Acts 6:1-6; Acts 15:1-6
