Cassava has so many uses, and this has resulted to its high demand in both local and international markets. According to Daily Trust (March 29, 2016), Nigeria has become the largest producer of cassava in the world with an annual output of 45 million metric tons. It's obvious that the supply of cassava to both local and foreign markets can never be enough. As a result, more and more cassava farmers have to improve on their farm practice in order to increase their yield and meet the demand of the market. Also, new farmer should join this league to ensure steady supply of this profitable crop. Cassava does very well in most parts of West Africa like Nigeria, Cameroon, Senegal, Benin Republic, and Ghana. However, the right knowledge on how to grow cassava from land preparation to harvest is an important factor to consider. Also a knowledge on pest and diseases that affects cassava plants and how to control their spread should not be overlooked. The cassava farming process includes; *Land preparation: In this, the best soil to grow cassava is selected. Bush clearing is done, manure is added to the soil and ridges are made where necessary. For arid regions with low annual rainfall, irrigation channels are also constructed. *Planting: After preparing the land, the stems to be planted are cut accordingly and ascertained to be disease free. Also, the planting method to be adopted is chosen and the time of the day to plant is scheduled. *Weeding: Remove unwanted plants in your farm early enough to avoid competing for space and nutrients with your cassava plants. *Fertilization: Select the right fertilizer for your farm and apply using a method convenient to you. Fertilizers with high potassium content increases the starch content of cassava and the application of fertilizers about 4 months after planting will increase the size of the cassava tuber significantly. *Harvesting: Depending on the cassava type planted, cassava can be harvested any time between 8 - 18 months. Cassava does not last long after it has been harvested - it rots within days. Ensure you harvest your cassava when you have a ready buyer or when you want to use them immediately. Okay!
