Hello All,

Top of the moment to everyone on this platform.

I need to table my plight to every one who's willing to pick up a banking job as a contract staff. This is my experience,
at Age 25, I decided to work with my ND certificate, hence my parent struggled to sponsor my studies, I put in for HND part time, having the hope after my HND program, that I have the better chance to secure a job else where with my current certificate knowing fully fully well that I have 5yrs experience.

I was amazed during my interview sessions with employers that it would be unfair for them to employ me when they have CONTRACT staff with them that have not been converted.

Now, am 41, my experience in interview sessions is terrible, after all questions and interaction, I would be made to know that I have built over the years a good CV even in. a banking sector but the BARRIER is AGE.

With this am frustrated, am like what's happening in our country, is it a crime for some to Age, I mean my experience should be speaking for me and not refraining me from certain opportunities.

The recession now has even worsened all as since 2015 am out of job when Ecobank disengaged there staff of their duties.

it takes the Glory of Almighty for my Living cos I have nothing am doing right now!

So I implore all that may pick interest to banking job as contract workers to think well and not waste their precious and youthful age with this self centred firms.
Thank you,,
YewaLand.

Op, may God bless you for deciding to open people's eyes to this ambition killing career. I was also in the banking industry for about 10 years, I joined after my Ond at a very tender age but I was disengaged for flimsy reason last year. During my time in the bank, after seeing it all, I used to advise and sometimes discouraged young fresh ND intake of the bank to reconsider their decision to join bank industry.

It's pathetic that the banking sector of this country as turned to be a carrier killer and the painful thing about it is that the industry is bigger than the law of the land when it comes to policies guiding the wellbeing of their employees. From experience, I see this sector as one of the most corrupt place where the likes of efcc, icpc and other concern regulators should visit and overhaul. Not just for employees welfare alone but there are many serious shady business deals that are being done in banks on daily basis.

Gone are those days when people have high regards for Bankers, those days when banking is a carrier for individuals to join and retire as a Banker. This days it is rear to find someone who started the banking career and retire in it. The common trend in that industry in this generation is for bank to terminate or disengage their staff in the middle of their career, they dash employees' hope, they get them cut off at the time they have used the better part of the employees energy, intellect and time. It's usually very difficult for affected employee to get another job at the time bank sack them because age may no longer be on their side just like the case of the Op.

Well, my piece of advise for those intending to join that industry is to try other options and make bank job their last choice and while doing the job they should open their eyes for better things.

I feel your pain OP and I pray God provide a better job for you.

I wanted to have a similar case when I did my IT in one of the top bank in Nigeria, before I finished my I.T the people I met there who were employed with ND started telling me not to stay that it is always difficult to convert someone when you have your certificate.

So my supervisor told me then that he wants to permanent me, so I just have to tell him that I want to further more on my education, so he promised to help me when am through with my HND, till today, he doesn't pick my calls, though he has left the bank.

Majority of the people who adviced me then are still in one position, despite the fact that they have had an opportunity to further more to have BSc even Masters level

They do internal recruitment every 6 month, despite the fact, they don't get to employ them, and upgrade them with their new certificate.

Even the contract staff then that I know have been working for close to 2years before I got there and they are still where they are, and still promising them with upgrade till today, though some have left sha.

Banking is one evil I know of but let me assure you that it has a junior brother called "Telecoms"

The slavery-contract staff in telecommunications also, is next to none. They can dispose and re-employ on a lower package 2 times a year

Our labour laws re totally dead and the orientation of "Man know man" has killed qualification and competency.

And in all sincerity, contract staffing is now the in-thing for all coys. Even LState government is into it! E.g LASG

Best way to short change workers and dispose off at will.

The painful part is when employers employ outsiders as full staff while graduate contract staff that have spent years are there

Its time the NLC do something about this so called contract staff stuff. It has become the order of the day. The companies involve in this scam(i choose to call it so) are doing it mainly for corruption. I want to believe the management involve in giving out this contract will also collect their own share %

It is well my brother but we can't help.

The labour system in Nigeria is terrible, there is absolutely no labour law guiding our affairs in the labor market, hence the exploitation.

The best is to be self employed if white collar job isn't forth coming or rather look for alternative source of income (Plan B)

My candid opinion

You need to first learn the difference between am and I'm. At 41 you're still using such shorthand.
The root of your problem is not farfetched oga.

Anyways, those bank management are trying to maximize profit so they have devised stringent means of sieving through entrants. Sorry to say, my advice is for you to look outside the bank. Look at other sectors. You can still make it. 40 is mid life but you still have some time to launch afresh. But it's in your best interest to tackle the problem highlighted above.

It is painful to see how PTA teachers are pitiably abandon in the FCT. These folks endure a long years of teaching in their communities. Many have taught for over three to ten years for a paltry sum of #10, 000 per month only to be side lined by educational stakeholders during an on going recruitment of teachers.

They suffered an humiliating experience when they see new teachers employed at the turn of a new academic session. The burning shame they went through is psychologically distressing.

Again, they suffered a painful blow when many of them were not recruited by the N-power scheme of the President Buhari led administration. It is psychically demoralising to see these teachers earning #10, 000 while their counter part are earning #30, 000 under the N-power scheme.

With equal justification, many of these teachers are suppose to be level ten officers or thereabout under the FCT-UBEB but alas they live miserably with cash barely enough to survive a week

I was grip with an overwhelming sadness during an encounter with a PTA teacher in a suburb school in the FCT. He narrated how he had tried to get a teaching job since he graduated 8 years ago. However, he had briefly taught in private schools but felt depressed when he reminisce how his colleagues are proudly progressing from one level to the next level

I am humbly asking the government and the relevant authorities in the FCT to find a way of bringing a smile on the faces of PTA teachers

Eradicate Misery from the faces of PTA Teachers

It's quite unfortunate, but in the banking industry, there are basic requirements one must meet before you become a core staff via entry level or conversion. This could be either of atleast a B. SC or HND(for few banks) with a minimum of 2:1 or 2:2 as the case maybe albeit some other banks that still put B. Sc on contract for a period of time.

It's there for important that one should not relax on a bank job especially when all you have is an OND/ND/HND. Because at the long run, without the B. Sc all the years of working would count as duty and not Experience. It's foreseeable that soon just a B. Sc would be useless.. This is same thing I have told some of my colleagues that have just an ND/HND.

When I say that Nigerian society is potentially Flawed in all ramifications, it's still you Nigerians that will come for my head with fury, in western nations, especially United States your experience is what matters in fact your older age in some cases even adds to your portfolio.

Please if you have not worked in any western nation in your life, please don't argue with me cause you don't know what am talking about.

With this age discrimination, life expectancy may soon get to 50years.
They are not helping the youth, they are not employing the men
Which way naija?

Nice write up and an eye opener for younger generation but there is little or nothing NLC can do about it. Contract is optional and you don't have to take it if you are not comfortable with the terms of the agreement and the high unemployment in the country makes employee at the mercy of employer. There is Temp agency that hire people on temporary basic in America and the government can't do nothing about it. The bottom life is we all need skill that can put meals on our table cos paper certificate is going nowhere in Naija
