A sad tale indeed. It shocks me why age should a barrier to employment in this country. In the western world it's never. What maters is skills set and experience. |

I am a contract staff of one of the big Nigerian banks and I can authoritatively tell you that the banking industry should be the last option for the youths. Both core and contract staff suffer the same fate. A place where people work in fear. Jobs can be terminated any time any day. I thank God I now have other sources of income at least. Sometimes I regret ever making that decision to join the banking industry. I could have followed and pursued my dream of becoming a musician. At a tender age I was able to set up a website where I promoted my music works. Had a music group "BK7" then in my secondary school, also, wrote songs, very good ones, but all these died when I got and celebrated my contract job with the bank. I wish to leave but don't know how. I had told myself I wouldn't work more than 2yrs but guess what, it is my 5th YR. YOUTHs be warned, parents be warned also. God bless us. |

It is not about Banking Industry, it is about the Country. Ask other contract workers in other industry. You will be happy you're in the Banking sector |

blueseacats:Banking and IT are two separate career paths. Banking involves a lot of written and verbal communication, engagement with customers and senior stakeholders both within the country and outside. For these reasons, use of English has to be top notch especially if you are considering a 'serious' role in banking and not just counting cash and stamping deposit slips. |

Ralphlauren:His use of English is not bad...seems you're a banker with the way you are attacking the op. But then, the op is not far from the truth... correct usage of English aside.. |

Let's face it there are people who have great careers in the banking industry I guess in your case you made a mistake by working as a contract staff for 16 years that's a very long time way too long I currently work in a bank and by the way I was a contract staff in that same bank for 4 years. From my experience banks rarely convert contract employees in my own case I do not doubt it was the hand of God. At this point you should be thinking of doing your own stuff especially if all you have is still an Hnd I hope not though and for your information I had an HND and went back to school for a Bsc if I did not do that I won't have the job I have now I think we all need to push our selves extra hard.Forget about Labour law |

Ralphlauren::not very bad,you should rather address the issue contract staff face in banks.. |

uzobaby:A contract staff enjoys little or no perks. Ego and pride are the main reasons some stay so long in a bank as a contract staff with no ambition or career path. They want to be seen wearing suit and tie and enjoy the "prestige" that comes with banking. |

tomdon:Don't worry, when you clock 40 as well, and reality hits you hard, you will come back here and rewrite this sentence. Best of luck Dear Brother, I know your situation seem pathetic given the circumstances surrounding your career and also considering the current realities in Nigeria. My advise is that if you have saved up some money, try to set up a small business. However, it is imperative to do your research very well, as you cannot afford a major failure on this. I wish you speedy blessing. Besides, @60 people still get there breakthrough. |

tanidabi:Exactly @ bolded. You did the right thing at getting a BSc. People tend to shy away from the harsh reality that in Nigeria, HND is considered a very inferior educational qualification. The OP did not develop himself educationally throughout the time he was with the bank. Just imagine if he had acquired at least the ACCA qualification. He would have stood a better chance crossing to another bank as a permanent staff or moving to another sector within financial services (pension companies, fund managers/administrators, insurance companies, audit firm, etc). There are other sectors within financial services that offer job security with good financial rewards. |

| Re: 16 Years Banking Experience As A Contract Staff (Age Barrier) by Nobody: 9:47pm On May 14, 2017 |
Ralphlauren:I just used that as an example, he never said what his role at the bank was, moreover I know someone who studied Swahili and can't speak English very fluently, yet he was hired in the investment department of citi bank. If you are talking about employment criteria in Nigeria then I give up, because it's nothing close to what is in practice around the world. Does it work for them? I doubt it, because when I look around I see a lot of unproductive people earning monster pay checks in Nigeria, now that sets a country's gdp back at least a notch or two. |
