You need to first learn the difference between am and I'm. At 41 you're still using such shorthand.
The root of your problem is not farfetched oga.

Anyways, those bank management are trying to maximize profit so they have deviced stringent means of sieving through entrants. Sorry to say, my advise is for you to look outside the bank. Look at other sectors, even other financial sectors. You can still make it. 40 is middle of life but you still have some time to launch afresh. But I advise you tackle the problem highligted above.

save enough?
it will interest you to know that the salary for bank contract staff is closer to something for feeding and transportation than something that can better your life. the case becomes worse when the person involved is based in a major city like Lagos and Abuja. In that case, it is living from hand to mouth whilst suffering and smiling. Above all, most people become comfortable and some are stupid to the extent of competing with core staff on a higher salary.
The koko is that the guy got a little bit over relaxed.
How much is the salary that something cannot be saved for 15 years? Enough to buy some acres of land and produce crops?

Hello All,

Top of the moment to everyone on this platform.

I need to table my plight to every one who's willing to pick up a banking job as a contract staff. This is my experience,
at Age 25, I decided to work with my ND certificate, hence my parent struggled to sponsor my studies, I put in for HND part time, having the hope after my HND program, that I have the better chance to secure a job else where with my current certificate knowing fully fully well that I have 5yrs experience.

I was amazed during my interview sessions with employers that it would be unfair for them to employ me when they have CONTRACT staff with them that have not been converted.

Now, am 41, my experience in interview sessions is terrible, after all questions and interaction, I would be made to know that I have built over the years a good CV even in. a banking sector but the BARRIER is AGE.

With this am frustrated, am like what's happening in our country, is it a crime for some to Age, I mean my experience should be speaking for me and not refraining me from certain opportunities.

The recession now has even worsened all as since 2015 am out of job when Ecobank disengaged there staff of their duties.

it takes the Glory of Almighty for my Living cos I have nothing am doing right now!

So I implore all that may pick interest to banking job as contract workers to think well and not waste their precious and youthful age with this self centred firms.
Thank you,,

As a contract staff , what specialized roles did did you take on?

Op, may God bless you for deciding to open people's eyes to this ambition killing career. I was also in the banking industry for about 10 years, I joined after my Ond at a very tender age but I was disengaged for flimsy reason last year. During my time in the bank, after seeing it all, I used to advise and sometimes discouraged young fresh ND intake of the bank to reconsider their decision to join bank industry.

It's pathetic that the banking sector of this country as turned to be a carrier killer and the painful thing about it is that the industry is bigger than the law of the land when it comes to policies guiding the wellbeing of their employees. From experience, I see this sector as one of the most corrupt place where the likes of efcc, icpc and other concern regulators should visit and overhaul. Not just for employees welfare alone but there are many serious shady business deals that are being done in banks on daily basis.

Gone are those days when people have high regards for Bankers, those days when banking is a carrier for individuals to join and retire as a Banker. This days it is rear to find someone who started the banking career and retire in it. The common trend in that industry in this generation is for bank to terminate or disengage their staff in the middle of their career, they dash employees' hope, they get them cut off at the time they have used the better part of the employees energy, intellect and time. It's usually very difficult for affected employee to get another job at the time bank sack them because age may no longer be on their side just like the case of the Op.

Well, my piece of advise for those intending to join that industry is to try other options and make bank job their last choice and while doing the job they should open their eyes for better things.

From the way you sounded I can loudly say that you were once a skye Banker. .....

Cheers

I am a contract staff of one of the big Nigerian banks and I can authoritatively tell you that the banking industry should be the last option for the youths. Both core and contract staff suffer the same fate. A place where people work in fear. Jobs can be terminated any time any day. I thank God I now have other sources of income at least. Sometimes I regret ever making that decision to join the banking industry. I could have followed and pursued my dream of becoming a musician. At a tender age I was able to set up a website where I promoted my music works. Had a music group "BK7" then in my secondary school, also, wrote songs, very good ones, but all these died when I got and celebrated my contract job with the bank. I wish to leave but don't know how. I had told myself I wouldn't work more than 2yrs but guess what, it is my 5th YR. YOUTHs be warned, parents be warned also. God bless us.

I believe the use of English will be a turn off if the employer can't find the skills he need in you. I mean, if I need a good software engineer and he's sitting right in front of me, I don't care if he can't spell his name

Banking and IT are two separate career paths.

Banking involves a lot of written and verbal communication, engagement with customers and senior stakeholders both within the country and outside. For these reasons, use of English has to be top notch especially if you are considering a 'serious' role in banking and not just counting cash and stamping deposit slips.

Well, when you are unemployed with 16 years banking experience and desperately in need of a job, use of English DOES matter.

For example, you cannot send a CV, cover letter or an email full of grammatical errors to a potential employer and expect them to take you seriously.
His use of English is not bad...seems you're a banker with the way you are attacking the op. But then, the op is not far from the truth... correct usage of English aside..

Banking is one evil I know of but let me assure you that it has a junior brother called "Telecoms"

The slavery-contract staff in telecommunications also, is next to none. They can dispose and re-employ on a lower package 2 times a year

Our labour laws re totally dead and the orientation of "Man know man" has killed qualification and competency.

And in all sincerity, contract staffing is now the in-thing for all coys. Even LState government is into it! E.g LASG

Best way to short change workers and dispose off at will.
Telecoms own is nothing to write home about. Now that the Chinese, Indians and Lebanese have taken over the industry, it has been totally messed up.

A contract staff enjoys little or no perks.

Ego and pride are the main reasons some stay so long in a bank as a contract staff with no ambition or career path.

They want to be seen wearing suit and tie and enjoy the "prestige" that comes with banking.

Dear Brother, I know your situation seem pathetic given the circumstances surrounding your career and also considering the current realities in Nigeria. My advise is that if you have saved up some money, try to set up a small business. However, it is imperative to do your research very well, as you cannot afford a major failure on this. I wish you speedy blessing.

Exactly @ bolded.

You did the right thing at getting a BSc.

People tend to shy away from the harsh reality that in Nigeria, HND is considered a very inferior educational qualification.

The OP did not develop himself educationally throughout the time he was with the bank. Just imagine if he had acquired at least the ACCA qualification. He would have stood a better chance crossing to another bank as a permanent staff or moving to another sector within financial services (pension companies, fund managers/administrators, insurance companies, audit firm, etc).

There are other sectors within financial services that offer job security with good financial rewards.

I just used that as an example, he never said what his role at the bank was, moreover I know someone who studied Swahili and can't speak English very fluently, yet he was hired in the investment department of citi bank.

If you are talking about employment criteria in Nigeria then I give up, because it's nothing close to what is in practice around the world. Does it work for them? I doubt it, because when I look around I see a lot of unproductive people earning monster pay checks in Nigeria, now that sets a country's gdp back at least a notch or two.
