I am a contract staff of one of the big Nigerian banks and I can authoritatively tell you that the banking industry should be the last option for the youths. Both core and contract staff suffer the same fate. A place where people work in fear. Jobs can be terminated any time any day. I thank God I now have other sources of income at least. Sometimes I regret ever making that decision to join the banking industry. I could have followed and pursued my dream of becoming a musician. At a tender age I was able to set up a website where I promoted my music works. Had a music group "BK7" then in my secondary school, also, wrote songs, very good ones, but all these died when I got and celebrated my contract job with the bank. I wish to leave but don't know how. I had told myself I wouldn't work more than 2yrs but guess what, it is my 5th YR. YOUTHs be warned, parents be warned also. God bless us.

you know how to leave, just arent bold enough to. since you already have other sources of income it should be easy for you to leave. first diversify your income stream, save up enough to sustain yourself for at least 8months, checkmate your lifestyle making sure that it isnt beyond modest. then set a resignation date in mind and do not turn back on it regardless of what happens and the naysayers, inshort do not discuss it with people who are addicted to life in a comfort zone and the fear of uncertainty. That's how i managed to resign my job 2 months ago, after working for just 3years at an engineering firm.

its not easy living without a job, but if you can hustle and have a skill set or businesses to involve in, with time it is far more rewarding. things could go down south many a times but at least you know you wouldnt end up wasting your life in the employment of an entity that only cares about themselves.

The fact is contract job is totally different from permanent job, it baffles me when I see my old friends that have been PS since 2007 and they are still happy. The bank don't have it in mind to convert you. Even if they want to, they have their candidates. So pls the best time to vacate that contract job is 5years.
I was once a contract staff, I spent 6 years with one of this old banks but I was wise to leave when the ovation was loud because.

The Challenge most people have is to know when to move on. Wither Contract or Permanent Staff, it is clear that people that get promoted faster are the people that move around a lot. As a full time staff of a bank, I was rejected from another bank because I was also too old to fill in the position available. I had to resign and float my own business. Life is a challenge! You do not have to work in a bank. There are many opportunities to survive in Nigeria today, all you need is to open your eyes and be ready to pay the price.

I was in the same Ecobank for eight years, I got fed up of waiting for promotion moved on to another bank with a higher level and better pay. Stayed 2 years there and then attempted to move to another bank. I was told I am over-aged. I resigned from the bank and went solo. I am telling you that I am paying my bills and living comfortably without taking loans which was our usual practices as bankers.

Hmm. Your thoughts are brilliant, it's just that they appear too theoretical. I was in the bank, even as a chartered banker with HND. I was on contract for two years before I was converted. My experience is that the salary paid to the contract staff is hardly sufficient to keep body and soul together. Some of them receive as low as 30k monthly in an expensive city like Abuja. You see them putting on tie in the morning going to work, but they are broke. I had a vision to do ACCA, I could not start until when I was converted to a full staff. People in the system will relate with this. The bulk of the fraud you see in the banking sector is perpetrated by the contract staff. A popular quote in the banking system is a statement made by the former US treasury secretary that "... If any staff lives above his means, sack him, even if the reasons for his lifestyle can be justified, still sack him, because where living above one's mean might not be a crime, it can ultimately lead to a crime" In referencing this quote however, they always either mischievously or ignorantly ignore the opening statement of the quote that says "Pay your staff such income that could make them live comfortably and respectably in the society... ' honestly, Nigerian banking system is a crap.
Ralphlauren:
How can you spend 16years working as a contract staff in a bank

You should have done a Bsc (even if it's part time) and then looked for a permanent role even if it meant crossing to another sector.

I think you got too comfortable and complacent during your time at the bank and you failed to develop yourself further career wise.

You could have done TOP professional courses such as ACCA or CFA.

It's quite unfortunate, but in the banking industry, there are basic requirements one must meet before you become a core staff via entry level or conversion. This could be either of atleast a B. SC or HND(for few banks) with a minimum of 2:1 or 2:2 as the case maybe albeit some other banks that still put B. Sc on contract for a period of time.

It's there for important that one should not relax on a bank job especially when all you have is an OND/ND/HND. Because at the long run, without the B. Sc all the years of working would count as duty and not Experience. It's foreseeable that soon just a B. Sc would be useless.. This is same thing I have told some of my colleagues that have just an ND/HND.
Oga Manylex, can I pls get ur email address...Got something to discuss with you sir.

Hello All,

Top of the moment to everyone on this platform.

I need to table my plight to every one who's willing to pick up a banking job as a contract staff. This is my experience,
at Age 25, I decided to work with my ND certificate, hence my parent struggled to sponsor my studies, I put in for HND part time, having the hope after my HND program, that I have the better chance to secure a job else where with my current certificate knowing fully fully well that I have 5yrs experience.

I was amazed during my interview sessions with employers that it would be unfair for them to employ me when they have CONTRACT staff with them that have not been converted.

Now, am 41, my experience in interview sessions is terrible, after all questions and interaction, I would be made to know that I have built over the years a good CV even in. a banking sector but the BARRIER is AGE.

With this am frustrated, am like what's happening in our country, is it a crime for some to Age, I mean my experience should be speaking for me and not refraining me from certain opportunities.

The recession now has even worsened all as since 2015 am out of job when Ecobank disengaged there staff of their duties.

it takes the Glory of Almighty for my Living cos I have nothing am doing right now!

So I implore all that may pick interest to banking job as contract workers to think well and not waste their precious and youthful age with this self centred firms.
Thank you,,
YewaLand.
I very much appreciate you for sharing your practical experience but I want to say you need to be blame if you are now finding it difficult to live. during those eyes you were working, I had expect that you have alternative plan to fall on should the unexpected happens.
every single person be you a lady or a guy should always try as much as possible to have alternative plan.
you could have take the risk of employing one of your mate who u are sure of his business acumen but has no money or job like yourself.
it is high time we stop blaming people who give us opportunity to earn something when our government has failed us totally. take the little advantage given to you to change your life for better.
16good yrs and you are trying to tell me u couldn't save #1.6m( #100,000 per year, less than 10,000 per months) to start up life should anything happen contrary to expectations.
at 41, why are you still bend at working for somebody, is it not time you employ others?
contract staff is not as bad as you are trying to paint it, I think your attitude to life is the problem here. contract staff can help you to change your life for good in the absence of other opportunities.
guys out there, before you turn down contract job opportunity, pls ask the OP if he has something better for you? if no, kindly hold tight on to it and plan your life from there. 16yrs gone and he can't even employ himself yet he is blaming those who gave him small opportunity when he can't give himself any talk more of giving others.
sorry if I am too harsh on you but I have to tell you the truth.
now my advice; during your 16yrs work, I supposed u should have friends you work and catch fun and even spent your money with, call at least 5of them and tell them to lend you some money,100k from each should help you start something. gradually you can repay them. success

I want to shed more light on the OND contract job, I was once a contract staff in one of the bank in Nigeria, but at inception I was sent for induction training in their training school, it was there I was made to know that OND contract job was established then by the bank to help those who have OND but unable to sponsor themselves further for their degree to work for some time and save money to be able to train themselves further, because if you look at the appointment letter, the job is meant for one year renewable if you conduct yourself well, but we all forgot too soon to stop after we have started enjoying regular monthly salary. it is not the fault of the bank but the contract staff who thought he/she have landed a job and relied on the contract job as permanent. I had this at the back of my mind immediately I came back from the induction training and planned to work for just four years.
my advice is that, if you can get the contract job, do it and don't ever think you have gotten a job, use it as a stepping stone to your endeavor in life.

for those who are looking for job, take up contract job if you see, in my time it was not easy to come by, because you must have upper credit and you will write exam which you must pass before you can even be called for oral interview, I don't know how they do it now. You have so many opportunities, you get to meet with people who can help you if you have good moral and you are not fraud minded, you can even save money to start some business of your own later. thanks

Op, may God bless you for deciding to open people's eyes to this ambition killing career. I was also in the banking industry for about 10 years, I joined after my Ond at a very tender age but I was disengaged for flimsy reason last year. During my time in the bank, after seeing it all, I used to advise and sometimes discouraged young fresh ND intake of the bank to reconsider their decision to join bank industry.

It's pathetic that the banking sector of this country as turned to be a carrier killer and the painful thing about it is that the industry is bigger than the law of the land when it comes to policies guiding the wellbeing of their employees. From experience, I see this sector as one of the most corrupt place where the likes of efcc, icpc and other concern regulators should visit and overhaul. Not just for employees welfare alone but there are many serious shady business deals that are being done in banks on daily basis.

Gone are those days when people have high regards for Bankers, those days when banking is a carrier for individuals to join and retire as a Banker. This days it is rear to find someone who started the banking career and retire in it. The common trend in that industry in this generation is for bank to terminate or disengage their staff in the middle of their career, they dash employees' hope, they get them cut off at the time they have used the better part of the employees energy, intellect and time. It's usually very difficult for affected employee to get another job at the time bank sack them because age may no longer be on their side just like the case of the Op.

Well, my piece of advise for those intending to join that industry is to try other options and make bank job their last choice and while doing the job they should open their eyes for better things.

I left in my fifth year even though a core staff. Why should someone keep working and feeling like he is in a prison yard ?

That job is slavery. Worse off the big boys working at the bank head quarters in Lagos get promotion almost yearly, some of them are into real estate business, oil and gas, granting huge loans that give them big cuts.

When they resign, they buy houses abroad, or buy private jets.

Why can't I live like that too ? Just write down a date you want to resign and work towards it. Start a business today. True that making profit in business in Nigeria is getting harder by the day. Business profitability 10 years ago was 10 times better than today. Big companies kill off new competition. For example in 2001, when GSM was newly launched, N100 call credit was sold at N80 by Service providers to key distributors, They resell N90 to retailers who make N10 after selling at N100. Many key distributors became multi millionaires overnight. But today those overnight millionaires have become poor rats. Why ? Profit margin for distributors have been narrowed down to 3% from between 20% to 30% 16 years ago. From Telecoms to Cement distributors, from Electronics manufacturers to Fast moving consumer goods, this wickedness of manufacturers is killing off businesses that occupy the distribution chain. In all, manufacturers want to maximize profit at the expense of their distribution partners.

So today, business isn't easy anymore. All I can say is, seek out an unregulated business that will profit you well, then resign. Simply put, READ WIDE..

Bankers are privy to a lot of information, yet they do not use them. Business is all about secret. A business man will never tell you what makes him his biggest money, yet bankers get all these info from the customers for free.
