Volume of cone = 1/3 X 22/7 X 6 X 6 X 16
=603.4cmcubed
Where radius = diameterĂ·2 = 6cm
Height of cone= 16cm,
Since the cone is half-full,we have;
Volume of water = 1/2 X volume of cone
=1/2 X 603.4
=approx 302cmcubed grin

okay, taking over from the boy with blue eyes
1. find the volume of the cone(blue eyed boy already did this so wont bother)
2. divide the volume by 2(the cone is half filled remember?)
3. use the new volume of the cone(302 in this case) to solve for the height
4.it goes thus 1/3xrxrxpixh = 302
5.1/3 x 36 x 22/7 x h = 302
6. 38(or so) x h = 302
7. h = 302/38
8. h = 8 cm ( or so)
9. tadaaa!!!
10. willing to share the money with blue eyes ;Dokay, taking over from the boy with blue eyes

thank God u are seeing the questions itself.the height u are seeing isn't the slant height, rather the real height. when I say the question is tough .take it from me that it is tough .one more thing, this questions is under frustrum in ss1 new general mathematics. the answer u got is not correct.

I have taken my time to examine the question properly, it's quite technical but I have solved it.

I can't type it here, I have attached a picture showing the solution.

modified @ monsieurbanky

explanation

first step is to find the total volume of the cone., since it's exactly half full of water by volume. it means we divide the volume by 2 to get the volume of the water in the cone. that is the tricky part as one may think it's the height of water in the cone.

next step is to equate the volume of the water in other to get h. but r is also unknown. but if you find the ratio of h/r, we can substitute in the volume equation to get h.

beautiful
so the jinx is that the ratio of h and r in a cone is constant

I have taught them similar triangle before and have also solved previous problems using similar triangle too.I gave them this question as class work together with another question .when they could not do it.I started to solve it thinking it is simple just like others. I was stuck to the board for more than 10mins like a robot. anyone who has taught a large class before would understand what I am talking about I didn't know when I started sweeting.but thank God all of that is over .

You are a good teacher I must say. It is good you go back to your students to finish any unsolved problem. Some teachers will manipulate and drop the answer there and move to the next topic. Kudos for learning more to teach well, your reward is on Earth. A piece of advice, pls always try to solve some of the questions you intend to use as examples before going to the class. If you encounter this kind of situation again before your students, they will begin to have doubts in you. Try as much as you can to have the most difficult set of questions solved before you attempt them before your students. I still have note on some of the difficult problems I solved when my head was on fire and always make reference to them any time I want to recall some things

my suggesstion is that you should try and solve questions on the topic that you will teach before taking them to class. I have taught Mathematics in different schools for over 5 years, that is what I normally do. You are really a hardworking teacher. Some teachers will just skip d question.

I used a slightly more different approach and was able to pinpoint the exact answer.

An engineer will approach the same problem slightly more differently than a mathematician. A mathematician wants to see the step, an engineer wants to see only the results.

Basic assumption I used, the height cannot be 8cm due to uneven distribution of a Cone's size. Height is greater than 8cm.

Secondly, the diameter to height ratio is 0.75.

Thirdly, I introduced step increment. This looks ugly on paper, but you can do it excel, easy stuff.

Fourthly, I found the target vol of 302cm3 and worked out a diameter and height that will hold that much volume.

Fellow Nigerian students follow the guy that solved it before me. He is more brilliant but I am more smarter, and his method will fetch you maximum marks.

But the I have a challenge for drdreyy, what if you are to work out the height from the top, and given a target volume of 403cm3. cheesy cheesy
