Jamille

Gloria and I became really good friends. I got to discover we were born on the same day and year. It felt really wonderful to know that. Rachel and Kara knew her already but at a distance. She joined our gang and mum changed our name to 'The Four Pearls'
We always laughed at the name because we thought it awkward but mum didn't care how much we laughed.
Gloria had issues with studying so I volunteered to help her. Among the four of us, I was the next in command after Kara in the art of 'book-wormism'. Gloria improved as we studied together and I was glad I helped her.
Jathniel turned out to be a great friend. He was Gloria's confidant and was gradually becoming mine too. I considered him my favourite confidant after mum.
My dad continued with his busy schedule, barely having time to ask of my well-being. Daddy Liam was out as usual. He promised to come back for Christmas as did Jason.
Christmas seemed to take longer to arrive but I waited patiently. Luckily, Kara,Rachel,Jason, Gloria and I had our holidays at the same time. So, it turned out to be a grand homecoming. We all returned home two weeks to Christmas and mum was delighted.
Jason and Gloria came to stay with us. The house was so much fun. The only person who suffered a bit was mum. She talked and yelled at us from dawn till dusk. We always did silly things in the house just for fun.
One evening,when mum went for a friend's birthday party,we decided to have our own mini party. She told us to behave ourselves because she was bringing a surprise back home for us. She told us she would be back late so we shouldn't wait up for her. We agreed but when she left,we turned the sit-out to our party hall.
Gloria and Kara handled the decorations, Rachel and Jason went to buy drinks while I was in charge of food.
By 7pm, everything was ready. We dressed up like we were going for a real party. The music was booming from the speakers. Our closest neighbours were about 50m away so we had no problems with the music.
After about an hour of dancing, we settled down to eat.
"Well, that reminds me,where's Philip?" Jason asked.
"Oh Kara's love,he travelled to meet his family in Port Harcourt." Rachel replied.
"Rachel, if I reach you there,you'll know yourself." Kara retorted.
We laughed.
"I really wanna meet this Philip o. You all seem to dislike him." Gloria put in.
"You guys should tell this young lady that she won't like what will come out of seeing him." I replied and we all laughed.
"You guys eh" Gloria said. She was sitting opposite Jason on the table.
"Guys, I have an announcement." Gloria announced.
"Can you make a sentence without the word 'guys'?" Kara said.
I laughed and soon,every other person joined me. Kara laughed her signature laugh and spilled her drink on Gloria who was seated beside her.
"Ah ah! You guys have seen what Kara has done because of her laugh." Gloria whined.
"You don talk the 'guys' thing again." Rachel said.
Gloria's hands flew to her mouth immediately causing Kara's laugh to go further.
"Alright guys,let's allow her make her announcement." Jason came to Gloria's rescue.
It was Gloria's turn to laugh. She laughed while pointing a finger at Jason.
We all looked at her,wondering what had come over her.
"I actually didn't have what to say, I was only looking for attention." She managed to say,still laughing.
"My God! If I comot this shoe, na your head e go land." Jason said as he pretended to remove his shoe.
"Sorry jare." Gloria apologised.
"Just imagine mum just comes back this moment."
Kara scoffed." That's impossible. She's staying out late."
Just then,we heard a knock on the gate.
We looked at each other's faces and Kara whispered " Run for your lives everyone."
That was all we needed to hear. We all broke into a run. Each person heading towards a different direction.

I didn't know where the others ran to but I ran to the backyard. I listened to hear if somebody had gone to open the gate but I heard nothing.
I decided to go so I replaced my high-heeled sandals with a pair of slippers I found nearby. One of Kara's maxi gowns was still hanging outside,so I threw it on. The knocking persisted.
"I'm coming." I yelled as I rushed to the gate.
I glanced around and the food was still on the table in the sit-out. I sighed as there was no magic I could work at that minute. I breathed in before opening the gate.
I folded my fingers into a fist when I saw who stood grinning at the gate.
"You're such a jerk. How dare you frighten us all like that?"
He looked at me, bewildered.
"Take a chill pill sis,what are you talking about?" He said.
I started punching his chest and murmuring incoherently. He lifted me off the ground and took me inside despite my protests.
The others had come out of hiding by this time to watch the little show I was hosting.
He dropped me on the floor. "Hi everyone"
"No hi to you" I said still pissed.
"I'm sorry sis though I'm yet to understand my crime."
"Well, you interrupted our party. That's your crime." Rachel spat
"And that's not all, you made us scamper like little rodents." Kara added.
"I'm deeply sorry then." Jathniel replied.
"Let's not take it out on him. He didn't know we were having a mini-party. Welcome Niel." Jamille said.
"Thanks Mille, you're a life saver." He said.
"Mille,seriously must you always be so forgiving?" Jason spoke for the first time.
"Ask her for me o. She no gree make we vex small for this Jathniel. Na which kind tin be that?" Rachel put in.
Jamille laughed. "Niel, this is the last time I'll plead for you before these people cut off my head."
"Thanks. So,can I join the party?" He asked.
"Lips sealed." Jamille said.
"You can join if you'll take us all to Ibeno beach tomorrow." I suggested with a sly smile.
Jathniel groaned with his hand on his face.
"You've got yourself a deal Miss Gloria." He said.
"Are you serious? That's why I love you big bro." I squealed as I gave him a big hug.
"Yeah yeah,you have a funny way of expressing your love though." He said,trying to free himself from the hug.
"Come sit" Rachel handed him a chair while Mille served him a plate of fried rice and chicken.
The chats continued but this time in small groups of two. Rachel was chatting and laughing with Jason. Kara and I were talking about movies we had watched. Jamille and Jathniel were having their own conversation.

"So, how's my sis been doing over here?" Jathniel asked me.
"Oh she's great." I answered.
"Like me abi."
"Says who?" I said.
"You of course. You're a testimony of my greatness." He replied ,sipping his drink.
"How so?" I squeezed my face pretending not to know what he was talking about.
"Your gang members and I were the ones who forced you out of your shell. At least,you don't hide in the car anymore and you're free with all of us. Unlike before, when you were Jason's second skin."
I laughed,throwing my head back.
"Yeah, you're right. I'm indebted to you guys." I smiled shyly.
"You may be indebted to them but not to me. It was wonderful helping you and I'll do it all over again." He said.
"So,did you go to work today?" I asked,trying to change the topic.
"Nope, I was home with mum all day." He answered.
"Won't you get punished at work or something?" I probed further.
"Punished? It's my company girl." He replied.
"Your what?!" I exclaimed.
"You mean Gloria never told you?" He looked surprised that I was just hearing it for the first time.
I looked down. "Well,anytime I ask her about you,she would say I should come ask you myself. So umm... I didn't know how to walk up to you and start asking silly questions."
"They're not silly questions na. Feel free to come to me anytime and don't look down when you're talking to me." He lifted my chin up with two fingers.
"Okay, if you say so."
"So, I'll make this easier for you. I've been looking for a bestie for a while. Will you do me the honour of being my best friend?" He asked.
"You're funny o." I laughed but he maintained the same smile he always had on his face.
"I'm actually serious Jamille."

I watched her intently.
"Alright,I'll be your best friend" she said.
"Good,so let's talk about me." I answered.
"Go ahead sir."
"Of course you know I lost my dad three years ago."
"Yeah I do,and I'm sorry about that."she replied,her face softening a bit.
"It's Okay. I'm sort of used to it. He left the company in my care. I was only 21 then. I was about to go for Youth Service when he passed away. I was the only one who studied architecture like my dad."
"Niel,did you just say only one? Gloria must have been 13 then. Do you have another sibling?" She asked.
"I'm done with my food. I'll help you pack up." I dodged the question.
"The plates are all disposable so we'll just trash them." She said.
We packed the plates together,leaving the drinks on the table. Gloria winked at me as I was helping Jamille. I shook my head.
She always believed I had something for Jamille and I couldn't convince her otherwise.
I followed Jamille to the kitchen and we disposed the plates and serviettes.
Jamille was eight years younger than me. I didn't see how I could love or date her. She was still a kid. I only saw her as a great friend.
"So,you haven't answered my question yet Niel." She said.
"Oh! That was a slip of the tongue Mille." I hoped she was convinced.
"Alright,go ahead with your story." She urged.
" OK ma. I went for service and came back to handle the company. It's an architectural company. Though,we're thinking of venturing into electronics in the nearest future." I said as we walked back to our seats.
"Wow! You're quite wonderful. You've been taking care of your mum and sister since then right?" She asked
"Yeah sure. That's the least I can do for them. They're all I've got. Neither my dad nor my mum have any siblings so we're pretty much alone."
"Eya. Now you've got a best friend." She said.
"Yeah I do."
"So,what's the name of the company?" She asked.
"Crystals Ltd." I answered.
"I see."
"It's few minutes to nine o'clock. Mum will be worried, I have to go." I informed her.
"So soon?" She asked and I nodded.
"People,I'm leaving." I announced to the rest.
"You've finished gisting abi. You guys have had your fun and you want to go." Gloria challenged.
"Yes madam 'you guys'. I'll be here tomorrow by 1pm. Hope you guys will be ready by then."
"Sure thing,you can count on us. I'll force them to be ready on time." Jason
answered.
"Alright ,bye guys and bye bestie. Have a great night." I slipped out as quickly as I could to avoid Gloria. I knew she'd talk. I stood outside the gate eavesdropping to hear what she would tell Jamille.
"Which one is bestie again?" I heard Gloria ask.
Jamille laughed " I don't know o."
I decided I had heard enough. I got into my Toyota Corolla and drove off.

"I'm not answering any silly questions." I said as I moved towards the table.
Gloria laughed. "Who asked you sef?"
"My sister o." Rachel added.
"Whatever. Don't you think we should pack up before mum gets back?" I asked.
"Uhm nope. Let's watch a movie. I'll go get the laptop." Kara suggested as she got up and walked to the door.
"I'm yet to understand how Kara succeeds as a medical student with the number of movies she sees everyday." Rachel said, shaking her head.
"I heard that." Kara yelled from the entrance of the door.
"Dah ikpa! You get ear o." Jason yelled back and we laughed.
She emerged few minutes later.
"Alright guys,we'll be seeing an old movie." She announced as she turned on the laptop.
"Which one be old movie again na, I'm sure you don't want us to watch any 2017 movie you have." Rachel complained.
"Ah ah! You can talk o. Just yesterday,we saw a 2017 movie together and today,you're whining." Kara shot at her.
"Girls! Enough na. Kara,what year is this movie?" Jason came in to prevent a quarrel.
"It's a 2009 movie,but trust me,you'll love it. It's called 'Hotel for Dogs' " Kara said happily.
"Can you imagine!?" Rachel put in.
"Sounds interesting Rachel. Let's give it a shot please." I pleaded.
"Fine then." Rachel crossed her arms,apparently vexed.
Kara played the movie and it was indeed a wonderful movie. Rachel ended up getting wrapped in the movie when she saw one of her best actresses- Kyla Pratt.
Halfway through the movie, we heard the honk of mum's car horn.
"Chai! Bad market." Rachel exclaimed.
Gloria was about to go to the gate when Rachel pulled the gown she refused to take off.
"Are you high?" Rachel asked.
"Let's lift the table to the backyard immediately. It's plastic na,so it won't be heavy." Jason suggested. He carried the table with Gloria while the rest of us struggled to remove our heeled shoes.
The honk of the horn continued. I rushed to the gate and opened it. The car was driven in.
"Welcome mum." Kara,Rachel and I chorused.
"Thanks. Where were you people?" She questioned observing our outfits.
"We were inside ma." Kara answered.
"Inside ke,with these clothes?"she probed.
Gloria and Jason came running back at that moment.
"Good evening ma"they chorused.
"Good evening to you. Where are you two coming from?" She queried.
"Ma,we ehmm..."
Daddy Liam stepped out of the car at that moment.
"Dad?!" We all exclaimed at once.
We ran to his side to escape mum's questioning.
"How are my babies doing?" He asked.
"We're better than the best." Rachel said.
He laughed.
"Who drove ?" Kara asked as she tried to peer into the driver's side. The door swung open and Philip stepped out.
"I drove." He answered.
Kara was taken aback. She stared at him with so much hatred.
Rachel burst into laughter and the rest of us followed suit.
"Oya,take my husband's things inside." Mummy instructed.
Jason and Kara did that. I went to her side and held her hand.
"Afia mma abadie?" She asked
"I'm fine mum." I answered.
She laughed, "You must speak this Ibibio by force o."
I smiled as we walked in together.
"I know you children have done something funny but I'll let it slide because of you."
She planted a kiss on my forehead.
"Alright everybody,let's have a brief prayer." Dad announced.
We gathered round as dad led in the prayers which ended within ten minutes.
"Alright,to your rooms everyone." Mum said as she clapped her hands.
"Oh wait! One hug for each person." She added.
The hugs started from Kara, Rachel was next,Jason followed,then Kara and I was the last.
While I was still in mum's arms,she sighed and said "What do you want Kara?"
I freed myself from the hug. Everyone was looking at mum with innocent faces.
"Speak Kara" mum said.
"Alright mum. It's just that we want permission to go with Jathniel tomorrow to Ibeno beach." Kara said quickly.
"Did he come here?" Dad asked.
"Oh! That boy's so nice. I'm sure he volunteered to do that." Mum was smiling while we gave ourselves a knowing look.
"And what if I don't permit you guys?" Mum said, her face now devoid of the smile it held few minutes ago.
"Temi ti kpari o!" Gloria exclaimed with both hands on her head causing a giggle to come from dad.
