The difference lies in the structure of the barrels , the kind of projectiles they fire and the trajectory behaviour of the projectiles after they have left the gun ..The rifle is called a rifles firstly because the inside the barrel have been engraved with what we call Riflings which are specially designed grooves meant to put a spin on any bullet fired from it , this spin greatly improves the distance, accuracy and impact of the bullet .. While Shotguns are called so because the fire shots(pellets) instead of bullets from a smooth bore barrel which means they can't travel far and have have very poor accuracy and fire control .

The damage caused by a blast of shotgun pellets is very much dependent on the distance or range, between the shooter and the victim.

At very close ranges of less than 5 meters, a blast from a shotgun will obliterate a human head and reduce it to an shapeless red mass, while instantly felling the victim, who will be very dead indeed, even before they hit the floor. At such close quarters, all the pellets will be concentrated in an area no wider than your fist.

At longer ranges between 10 to 50 meters, the same shotgun blast will produce many small pellet holes on the target's body, and will likely cause death as well, perhaps after a short run powered by shock and sheer adrenaline. The pellets will scatter over a diameter equivalent to a dinner plate, increasing in spread in proportion with increasing range.

Beyond 50 meters, the energy of the pellets from a shotgun blast will start to taper off, which could result in the shooting victim surviving with some nasty wounds, and possibly still capable of running away from the shooter. Pellets impacting at ranges over 50 meters could pepper an area 4 to 5 feet in diameter.

Beyond 100 meters range, a shotgun is of little use because the pellets will have lost most of their knock-down energy, and will cause only superficial wounds that will likely be survivable, after those poisonous lead pellets have all been carefully removed by surgeons.

This detailed knowledge of shotgun damage is based on many years of hunting with a 12-gauge shotgun, targeting everything from flying wild-fowl to fast sprinting deer and wild pigs.
