Hello nairalanders! grin I am planning to visit Nigeria hopefully by 2019! I am considering staying in Abia state or Calabar state but I am curious to know more about the two states. I have been trying to get to Nigeria for a LONG time and the timing has just been off everytime! If you have been following me you know that I am an African American and looking to get closer to my roots in Africa. Well, I am currently living in Senegal! I like it here but Nigeria has always been my first love.. Anyway, I am still looking forward to that trip! Can anyone give me some information on Abia and Calabar? The different culture in the states, the ethnic groups, the safety, "must sees", cost of living, languages spoken (besides English) and stuff like that lol!!! Thanks! kiss

For visits, hanging out and cooling off, Calabar. For Business & stuff, Abia.
Also note that Calabar is a city in Cross River State and Abia is a State of its own.

How is life in senegal? And what is the prospect of getting a job there?
Re: Abia Or Calabar? by Marcelo290(m): 10:13pm On May 23, 2017
Calabar is a tourist destination, one of the most visited in the country, the state capital of Cross River State, there are several attractions here like the Calabar carnival which holds at the end of the year, you would find tinapa resorts and many relaxation places, It is a very neat city with both Natural and artistic beauty, also a very relevant and important place while talking about the Nigerian history. It is located in the South South region of Nigeria.

Abia on the other hand, is a state on it's own, Located in the Eastern part of the country and predominantly dominated by the Igbos, it's capital city is Umuahia, but most economic and industrial activities in the state take place in Aba, a place renowned for business and trade in the country...

So it all depends on you and your reason for visiting, Nigeria on it's own is a large country with a diverse and very rich culture, you can aswell google these places for better information as what I said is only subjective to my little knowledge about them.

It's nice but very very DRY! Speaking french and wolof is a challenge but i'm learning. Senegal is rapidly developing, stable and safe. I'm not sure about the job sector yet but there is alot of entrepreneurship going on

Thank you for all that information! Calabar sounds like a good fit! I would definitely love to come around the time that the carnival takes place. It really sounds like I would enjoy it there.

Lol dry as in desert! Haha, its alot of sand and dust not much grass! Rain Season doesn't start until July. I'm in the capital city Dakar. If you go deeper into Senegal it's greener. The good thing about it though is there is less mosquitoes because it's so dry here.

Lovely description. If I was in the OP's shoes, I will pick Calabar as a first time settler. I think it's so much easier to settle in Calabar because life is generally easier there but both places are cool.

Which day will u actually travel? All your threads are about one African country or the other, nawa it's not that hard na. With N12K you can get a one way pass to Ghana enroute Benin and Togo so you can actually alight in any of those countries, the next thing is putting some money aside for housing, etc, make Google your friend.

Calabar is definitely sounding like the place to be! I've heard good things about it in the past so that's what made me interested

Lol which personality? Hehehehe, and you think your own personality is intact, you who jumps on every thread, asking how you can gain access to every poverty stricken African country lol what does that do to your own personality, so tell me how your online insults will affect me na, how will an e-insult affect my life, how? cheesy

A bus to Benin from mile 2 is not more than N3K, a taxi from mile 2 to Ghana (one way) from the same place is not more than N12K. You need to go already, it is not hard, not something you will be asking questions and creating endless threads to relocate to an African country is not rocket science, first go on a visit to access the place then relocate.

Go to mile 2 and take a taxi

Take your time dear, don't be in a hurry. You will need to do a bit of planning (renting a house and other stuffs) but you'll enjoy your stay. What kind of business do you do, will you continue while in Nigeria or you're planning to get a job?
