Floors don't serve the structural function of transmitting load to the ground. Loads in storey buildings are transmitted to the ground through beams and columns to the ground. Ground floors don't transmit load to the ground.
the concrete oversight which is your German floor transmits the building load to the foundation through the foundation walls.... in a bungalow these walls are projected upward and they become the load bearing walls

You talk like a road side taylor. Hw cud you advice that casting the floor is not necessary.

OP, if you cant do 150mm cos of cost, dont go below 100mm i.e 4 Inches.
There is every tendency that if you go below the above stated height, the floor might get broken or cracked easily wen something like say woods during roofing fall on it.

I speak wit experience.
thnks wouldn't gi below dat.

lol foundations (strip, pad, piles, raft etc) transmit loads to the ground and not floors. If floors transmit loads to the ground they will be reinforced, won't they? Floors in industrial buildings with heavy machines are the ones that transmit loads to the ground and that is why the floors are oftentimes given special treatments like reinforcements and ground beam support. Floors in normal residential buildings don't serve any serious load transmission function. The only load they bear is that of people treading on them, furniture etc

Hope you know the difference btw over site concrete and DPC. Over site concrete is suppose to be 100mm-150mmm depending on the terrain of the land or area.

150mm is OK, except if is otherwise stated by the architect

I am not misinforming the public, I only expressed my opinion which I am sure of. You are however free to disagree with superior argument not just conjectures.

I still insist that mortar is one of the materials used in damp proofing.
if you insist sir, i'm afraid you are wrong, mortar is meant for jointing which is just 25mm thick, this can never stop moisture from penetrating, even concrete is still a medium that allows for diffusion which is why we introduce a polythene layer to stop moisture from penetrating.

OKAY.... FIRST THINGS FIRST.... THE TINY LAYER OF POLYMER IS CALLED DPM (DAMP PROOF MEMBRANE)

HOWEVER, THE DPC (DAMP PROOF COURSE) ALSO KNOWN AS OVERSITE CONCRETE AND ALSO TRADITIONALLY KNOWN AS GERMAN FLOOR IS 6"=150MM....AND IT FORMS A PART OF THE FOUNDATION, WE DON'T TAKE IT IMPORTANT IN NIGERIA ESPECIALLY ON BUNGALOWS BECAUSE WE WANT TO SAVE COST.... AND THAT'S WHY WE DEAL WITH DAMPNESS AND FLOOR DEFECTS A LOT

this is an interesting topic, by God's grace will soon start my own project which is a duplex. from the contributions have gotten here (pls correct me if am wrong) the standard thickness of German floor both for bungalows and a story building is 150mm or 6" and it's not necessary for it to be reinforced? and also what's the standard thickness for first floor (duplex) decking?

You said so in (at least) your last two posts. Floors are do not bear any structural load, that is not why they are made.

I am not giving wrong information about public, I have only expressed my opinion which I am sure about. However you disagree with better reasoning, not just conjecture.

I still insist that mortar is one of the materials used in damp proofing.
