Fashola commissions 16 fire fighting equipment
Posted To The Web: Tuesday, March 16, 2010 - sunkanmi Akoni & Monsur Olowopejo

Lagos Fire Fighting and Safety Services received a boost Monday when Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State commissioned 16 newly procured special fire fighting and rescue vehicles aimed at ensuring quick response to fire and other emergency situations.

The equipment included five rapid intervention fire vans, eight water tankers with 10,000 litres capacity and two Bronto Skylift/aeriel ladder vehicles.

The latest equipment is an addition to the first batch of 10 water tankers and one aeriel ladder vehicle which were also commissioned early last year.

Fashola while commissioning the equipment at the Alausa Fire Station Headquarters, Ikeja, said the rapid intervention vehicles would serve as a first responder to fire situations in difficult areas in the state before the arrival of the bigger fire fighting vehicles.

The governor said the unique feature of the rapid intervention vehicles was the easy access to narrow places because it would be easier to maneuver rough terrains

The foam truck, according to him, was solely dedicated to fighting chemical and petroleum based fire incident while the aerial trucks would assist in fighting fire in high rise buildings.

His words: “This is our innovativeness on a short term. On a long term, we intend to return our state to compete with other cities and states by reintroducing fire hydrants back to our major roads and installations across the state.

“The Ministry of Works, as our consultant, is already charged with the responsibility to put on their thinking caps on how we can put back our fire hydrants in strategic areas in the state.”

Fashola also disclosed that plans were on to build fire service stations in Ejigbo, Abesan and Lekki areas in the state before the end of the year and urged Lagos residents to take precautionary measures to prevent fire situations to save lives and property.

On his part, Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture, Alhaji Babatunde Balogun, who also explained the importance and usefulness of the equipment, expressed optimism that the equipment would bring about a new vista for fire fighting in the country.

Earlier, State Director, Fire Service, Mr. Aderemi Ajose, disclosed that the equipment made Lagos the first across the federation to acquire the aerial trucks and appealed to Governor Fashola to approve the implementation of the Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure, COMPASS, for the state fire service personnel.

It makes a big difference that even though he purchased these vehicles, we did not lose anything as a nation because he bought them locally. The story would have been different if he purchased them from Brazil or Germany.

Ask yourself why ANNAmco makes and supplies these trucks to South Africa, Gabon, Libya[thanks to Obasanjo] and Morrocco yet no Nigerian state has a functional fire fighting truck apart from this one fashola purchased lately. Your country is sorry.

To tell you the truth, I'm very much oblivious to the fact that any Nigerian comp produces fire trucks. Sure, it's a good thing that the equipments were sourced locally. These are even better equipments than what they have in Abuja.

Lagos state's new approach is to let the battalion pick up trucks race to fire scenes as first responders while relaying updates to inbound fire engines and water trucks via dedicate fire service radio. This allows the fire station to determine the nature of the fire, what equipment is needed and the best rout to access to the fire scene via the new GPS system.

The shameful old ways of doing things really got to go. I'm glad the state is stepping in with a fresh professional fire firefighting approach.

God will bless Fashola for all his work. Lagos is practically the only true bright spot in the country with all the bad things happening.

In any well meaning society, with a pro-developmental political system, Fashola would become the president in a little while.

Why can't Fashola become the president of this God forsaken country come 2011.

What the heck is rotational presidency?

Why should we leave someone that has shown so much promise to languish in a political tumoil which was sparked by his surpposed god-father, who is the same person making him to act currupt?

While he may need to answer the curruption allegations against him, I must say that we need people like Fashola and Donald duke who has shown so much promise to lead this country to a new level.

Look at the planning, organisation and execution of the projects in Lagos state.

The fact that people like Fashola cannot get a chance at the presidency makes me wish that Nigeria should divide!

When I shout let's divide Nigeria, myopic minds think that it is because I am Igbo. It is far beyond that.

This cesspit called Nigeria should divide!

Wow! 16 fire trucks we should all be happy, the celebration and acceptance of mediocrity by Nigerians is astounding. in a state that is home to millions (most areas inaccessible to these trucks) i wonder what difference this is going to make. Its like having 16 police cars in the state, how effective are they going to be?

Mr Biggs was burnt almost beyond recognition, i dont think any fire engine was present and ironically its right next to water.

Anyway its a step in the right direction albeit a half assed step, but its still a step

Na wa o! my brother, i am flabbergasted and dumbfounded. A governor purchased some trucks or is it fire trucks and we are here celebrating and commissioning. This is the height of low expectations. I have lived in England, i had never heard of a mayor celebrate the lunching of anything. Same in the US, you cannot see a jamboree anything a mayor (which is the equivalent of a council chairman), uses the council funds to purchase cars or anything. Here a governor would embark on Jamboree, if he purchases anything, from Taxis, to Keke Marwa, to trucks. One would think that he is using his personal funds. In a sane society, the governor should not be directly involved with such purchases, the various government agencies, including the fire service should be well funded and empowered to make their purchases. After all every agency goes to defend its budget in the house of assembly. Every single penny going out of state coffers does not have to pass through the governor. The governor should be busy designing policies and strategies and allowing agencies to implement these strategies.

A fire fighting strategy goes beyond buying vehicles, it involved design specifications to be spelt out by relevant building codes, adequate training and motivation of fire officers, appropriate enlightenment and education of the masses on how to handle and report a fire outbreak, adequate water availability (water hydrants) all over the state, good communication and other allied equipments, and loads of others.

Well, i do not blame you, you have never experienced a properly organized society, so you celebrate what ever you see. That is why i sometimes do not blame Government officials, they get better accolades when they embark on "visible projects" and scream about it, instead of taking a more sustainable and effective long term approach.

Reread the report. here are some interesting pointers;

His words: “This is our innovativeness on a short term. On a long term, we intend to return our state to compete with other cities and states by reintroducing fire hydrants back to our major roads and installations across the state.

Meaning buying the trucks is a show of their innovativeness for now. But they plan to reintroduce fire hydrants back to major roads. Now if My governor is thinking holistically and not the short term "visible project" approach. Which should come first, the fire hydrants or the trucks? - given the time left for this administration.

“The Ministry of Works, as our consultant, is already charged with the responsibility to put on their thinking caps on how we can put back our fire hydrants in strategic areas in the state.”

Oh it is the ministry of works that is charged with the responsibility of thinking how to plan and install fire hydrants?
Another question, who is meant to formulate the fire policies of a state and who is meant to implement them - the governor or the Ministry of works?

Fashola also disclosed that plans were on to build fire service stations in Ejigbo, Abesan and Lekki areas in the state before the end of the year and urged Lagos residents to take precautionary measures to prevent fire situations to save lives and property.

So there are plans to build fire stations, and before the end of the pear for that matter. So fashola is still in the planning stage, when will they employ consultants, invite contractors to bid, award the contracts and then the contractors deliver the projects? Can all that be done in the 8 months left before the year runs out. Remember, the last quarter of the year is for politicking and governors are more engaged with campaigns.

Attempt to answer the above questions,Do not worry if you do not know them , you will not be penalized if you miss all questions.

A typical response from a noisemaker, always playing the threat game, trying to sound like a victim here, i asked questions, instead of you answering them, you're here playing the victim card, Fashola is not related to me, he's as neutral to me as to you, but i won't just be watching when people try tantrum at everyone including those working to make things better. just because what is doing are little in your eyes does not mean there are little to the rest people.

I don't even know if you live in Lagos or not but those in Lagos appreciate the little changes we are seeing and we know it's just the beginning and won't stop here. a drop of water makes the mighty ocean they say, but then it takes time for a drop of water to make a mighty ocean.
