Hello guys, meet Terry my 6 months old caucassian. The thing is my dog only barks when it wants to poo or wee, or when it sights its food close by, or when I get back home from work and it wants to come off the lease to play with me. He dosent bark when a stranger comes into the compound, although he gives them this scrutinizing/suspicious look, but he never barks at them. Although there was one instance he barked at someone who was taunting him from outside his cage. I feel its territorial instinct should av started manifesting by now.it's parents are quite aggressive,it's late grandfather was a terror in the area bk then. I'm kinda worried because part of the reasons I got him for was security inclined. Its always in the cage or on a lease for most part of the day, I hardly release him at night because he's very destructive, av lost count of the clothes it has destroyed, plants , slippers and he keeps digging big holes in the garden, although I've bn releasing him at night in d last 2 days after I've riddled the compound of likely things he can destroy.

I really don't know what to do.

From the look of that dog, you pet it too much and feed him with nice food constantly. Feed him but when he's hungry. Hunger brings out the beast in them too. That dog is like four months old... Too healthy with lots of petting. Make sure strangers don't throw food to him also

relocate the cage at the back so he uses his ears to know when someone enters the gate and give signal by barking. Always go to the cage and teach him how to be aggressive by changing ur face and showing ur teeths as if u want to attack him, he will react back. Don't always go out with him as that will make him feel like doing that always and from there, he will love seeing people

German shepherd. From day one we bought it... Direct inside the cage and no much play and it got used to Hunger and eats less cos we didn't train it with much food. Most times once in a day. Only comes out of the cage when we lock the gate. Most times I do take it out for strolling but like two times in a month... The last time i took it to a football field... It saw a goat for the first time and attacked it to the point of death and it caused problem for us so we stopped going out with it. The dog too wicked sha beyond what I'm telling u here. Due to my senior bros was not living with us but came to join us and stayed up-to a year... They're worst enemies till he left.. My senior bros dare not go out when the dog is outside.... That's the extent the dog don't have anything to do with stranger even dough he sees u everyday. Only me can tame the dog cos he understands my body language. Starve ur dog and put it permanently in the cage.

Do you live alone or stay in a flat?? If you live alone and have a fenced compound, why in heavens will you chain up your dog or lock him in a cage all day and all night when he is not a chicken or rabbit

My dogs react madly to strangers and yet I pet and pamper them alot. They even have their own Air-conditioned room in my house with bed and food bowl.

So it's not really until you frustrate your dog. Frustration will only make him a beast. And from the way I see you, you want a dog that will be your friend and still your guard which is very possible as that's what I have. Friends and Guards. Not just guard who wouldn't know or care about you. The day you fail to bring food ad you let it loose, it shall vent it's anger on you. I've tried it. 4 dogs.. I've tried it. Trust me.

That dog will definitely come around. Please don't starve ur dog to toughen him/her up as it could lead to a tragic situation.
Check out my boy. I only trained him to be okay with whoever I want him to be okay with at a given time. As for visitors, please you need to call me first cos even while in his cage, you're still scared.

let me tell you a secret, 70% naija dogs that bark in cage won't do anything if they come out. lol I've tested it. Not all bark is a fight bark. So your dog is a reserved type of dog. One day you will see him in action. Train that dog. He needs training. He may not bark because he knows your friends pose no threat. Bring a real threat he may surprise you. My 7 months old GSD surprised me too last 3 weeks.

My wife and I always complain he doesn't bark. and truly he doesn't. Until one day one man that was shouting at my wife for silly reasons was displaying. He pounced on him. WITHOUT BARKING. They were telling me the gist when I got home. So calm down. Your dog may surprise you.

I have a feeling he would thou... Because there's this suspicious look he gives every stranger that comes into the compound from its cage, it also raises its snort up trying to pick up the persons scent, but it's almost asif he doesn't know what next to do after that...Lol.

Then the other reason behind d feeling is usually when hes outta the cage , he has alot of energy whenever me or my siblings play with him, he jumps,bite and keeps running in circles around us, atimes we even get confused as to whether he's actually playing with us or he's bn aggressive towards us.

Then on two different occasions I was told he barked at my mechanic and at a friend of my helper, but on both occasions he was outside its cage when they both walked into the compund.. could the caging thing be one of d reasons he dosent bark at strangers??..

@6 month your dog is still a puppy. Mine was just like yours at 6 month both in look and character. After a year, my dog was still friendly with everyone in the house but became a terror to any guest. please give the puppy time

On the truth note, German shepherd dogs are very aggressive wen it comes to attacking goats, my dog is always afraid of people wen ever we stroll out, but wen at home he do bark at any strangers., reason I don't know..brother concerning ur Caucasian, wen time comes, it will start barking on its own, trust me..I had one like DAT too, it took him one year to start barking at strangers., wen u starve him doesn't make him bark, but attack any body at anytime, trust me u are customer to police station...

Training is beyond obedience. It's more about relation.

Most dogs bark in cage so they would come out free. Not to fight.

Your dog's play with you is out of excitement. Don't keep him in a cage.

Hello guys.....

I'm happy to inform you guys that my CO has started barking at strangers.

It all started last week, there's this little girl that comes to my house occasionally, she always likes to go to his cage and try to touch him, usually my dog would move away from her, he wouldn't bark, but on this very day, as she was about making that move to touch him, he barked at her and she was scared as hell,lol!

Fast forward to today, a lady that usually comes to my house like thrice a week, d dog usually dosent bark at her when she comes but lo and behold this morning when she came into the house he started barking at her from its cage, she herself was surprised at his sudden aggression towards her. Shortly after, a plumber came around to work, immediately he was at the gate, my dog started barking, infact he barked so loud the iron bars of the cage were vibrating.

I've bn smiling all morning...., it took him 7 months to finally unleash those instincts.

Hi! What is the condition of your dog now? Mine is 1 year old but he not barking nor aggressive to anyone.

Look at his picture when he was 5 months but now he is 12 months. Please advise me as you had experienced

your dog is still young, give it some time. Territorial behaviours are natural in dogs. You don't have to out it in cages or starve then for it to surface.
