There are more yorubas in the US and UK than Igbos this is fact
The Fact is that aside UK, Igbos in diaspora are far more than Yorubas, its likely to be in the ratio of 2:1. Yorubas are more in the UK simply because there was free visa for Nigerians during colonial period, and since Lagos was the capital then, many Yorubas used the opportunity to migrate to London. Igbos dominate diaspora population followed by Yorubas & Binis.

I am sick and tired of these people telling us how much Nigerians in diaspora remitted back to Nigeria without telling us how much went out of Nigeria within the same period. These monies went out in for of school fees, medical bills, money laundry, stolen crude oil etc.

Any concrete data to support this assertion?

When we remit money home (and I've been remitting money back to Nigeria for 30 years now), they don't ask for our state of origin. You send money as a Nigerian or as a citizen of that country if you have naturalised. So without verifiable data, no one can say for an absolute fact which tribe sends money home the most.

In terms of which tribe is far more in the diaspora. again without verifiable data, no one can authoritatively state which tribe is more than the other.

Based on guess work though, I'd say the Yorubas are more. I've lived abroad for 30 years and travelled extensively, so at least I can hazard some sort of guess.

Oh by the way, if your reply comes with insult, I will not respond. That's why I rarely post on Nairaland.
Thanks.

Why would I resort to insult? What I stated is the obvious fact based on decipherible logic. Diaspora Igbos are apparently more in number than Yorubas.

They are more in the UK cos of 70s indigenization decree that left Igbos penniless and Yorubas had the control of those companies, though defunct now.
Their people emigrated to Europe to squander the money, taking advantage of the free visa

Nigeria[edit]

A major source of foreign-exchange earnings for Nigeria are remittances sent home by Nigerians living abroad.[22] In 2014, 17.5 million Nigerians lived in foreign countries, with the UK and the USA having more than 2 million Nigerians each.[22]

According to the International Organization for Migration, Nigeria witnessed a dramatic increase in remittances sent home from overseas Nigerians, going from USD 2.3 billion in 2004 to 17.9 billion in 2007, representing 6.7% of GDP. The United States accounts for the largest portion of official remittances, followed by the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, Spain and France. On the African continent, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Chad, Libya and South Africa are important source countries of remittance flows to Nigeria, while China is the biggest remittance-sending country in Asia.

"Desipherible logic" is not verifiable. I repeat no one can authoritatively state which tribe is more or less in the diaspora without accurate data to support the assertion. Anything else is just guesswork which anyone is free to hazard and believe if it makes them happy, I suppose.

18billion$?
This is very poor.
in 2015 and previous year, it was reported that nigerians in diaspora remitted 20-21billion$,
and with a weakened naira in 2016, I was expecting the remittances to reach a record high, not 18billion$

Naira got weaker in 2016_ which should have provided a huge incentive for diasporans to send home more money than they'd ever done, yet report is saying otherwise.

something is wrong, its either the previous records of the remittances of 2014 and 2015 is falsified or the present UN report is shabbily done.

most of it must have gone into real estate, that's the only sector diasporans who intend to come back think of.
& maybe health sector too. mama in d village needs medicare. tongue

but compared to wat Nigerians pay fr importation, education, health care & other foreign luxuries we are still at a loss o..
Unless you return to Nigeria, doing business from abroad is almost impossible.

People are too uncommitted and dishonest to manage your business on your behalf.

Most of us have sad stories to tell. I know some who have sold their hotels, guesthouses, farms, car dealership, pure water factories and other business they began from diaspora.

Often the only option left is real estate. Even if some tenants prefer to pay lawyers to fight you instead of paying rent, at least the property remains yours.

Actually Edo & Delta have a disproportionately high percentage of the remittance.Considering population.

years back in UK, Lagos, Ibadan & Benin City were the most popular remittance destinations. In fact those cities would be specifically written on remittance shop windows. It has hardly changed.

don't dull yourself, many Benin people go to Italy for what we all know but Igbos are still the largest Nigerian Diaspora in Italy or any country in Europe except UK where yorubas have a very large contingent.even at that, Igbos are like sardines there too. Am sure the gap between yorubas and igbo is not much and igbos will close the gap, the way am seeing it.

don't even call Germany and France, Igbos hold sway. especially those German automobile importers and igbo real estate merchants in Germany.

I don't think previous data was falsified but nothing is impossible. I would like to see the aviation data because around me, the weaker naira allowed people to travel home to take care of stuff and it's safe to assume that many went with lots of cash. I know of someone who was going home once in 2 years on the average and he went home 4 times in 2016 alone and twice this year growing his retirement business. Another friend went to Port Harcourt recently and declared over $15k in cash to the customs in Nigeria. The declaration may count as part of remittances but those who went with less $10k don't have to declare what they brought and added to the economy in Nigeria.

exactly my point, I will wait for world bank fact report on 2016. They are the agency that I know to be reliable in dishing out those facts not UN report. 2016 remittances should hit nothing less than 22billion $$$

We're contributing our quota to make Nigeria a better place.
But we need protection. Much of these money diasporans send home are not accounted for by the receivers.
