How To Use " I " ( Advice Needed Pls) by holywahala19(m): 7:02pm On Jun 17, 2017
There is this educational forum I belong to and a guy said" I were counting on u to do....." but some people there said it was wrong.

I know from my child and I'm still using plural verb after I .when they were saying that the guy was wrong,I was bewildered but I didn't say anything cos I happened not to be a member of that school, was there cos my own uni has no such forum!!!.

if we could say:
I have arrived instead of "has",
I love u instead of " loves",
I care for u instead of " cares ".
why would nt we say " I were counting on u to do....." as the guy said and people were criticizing the grammar.

English is complicated!!!
somebody should explain o or could it be the guy is right after all?

'I was counting on u to do.....' is the correct English. 'were' is for plural like 'we were counting on u to do.......'

are u aware that I hate(plural verb o) Femi,
I have(plural verb too) arrived.
I love(plural verb also) chocolate, are all correct?

why wouldn't one say I were ( plural verb too)counting on u to do....?

do you notice there is an 'if' before 'I' ?. Now that 'were' tagged along because of the 'u' in the statement, not the 'I'. Another example, if I was Ade, I would..........
You can't say, 'if I were Ade.........

We have different moods of verbs.
Read the subjunctive mood.
Re: How To Use " I " ( Advice Needed Pls) by Flexherbal(m): 2:09pm On Jun 18, 2017
The Subjunctive Mood
A verb is in the subjunctive mood when it expresses a condition which is doubtful or not factual. It is most often found in a clause beginning with the word if. It is also found in clauses following a verb that expresses a doubt, a wish, regret, request, demand, or proposal.

These are verbs typically followed by clauses that take the subjunctive:

ask, demand, determine, insist, move, order, pray, prefer, recommend, regret, request, require, suggest, and wish.
In English there is no difference between the subjunctive and normal, or indicative, form of the verb except for the present tense third person singular and for the verb to be.

The subjunctive for the present tense third person singular drops the -s or -es so that it looks and sounds like the present tense for everything else.

The subjunctive mood of the verb to be is be in the present tense and were in the past tense, regardless of what the subject is.

Incorrect: If I was you, I would run.
Correct: If I were you, I would run.
(The verb follows if and expresses a non-factual condition.)

Incorrect: I wish he was able to type faster.

Correct: I wish he were able to type faster.
(The second verb is in a clause following a verb expressing a wish. It also suggests a non-factual or doubtful condition.)

Incorrect: His requirement is that everyone is computer literate.

Correct: His requirement is that everyone be computer literate.
(Subordinate clause follows main clause with a demand.)

Incorrect: He recommended that each driver reports his tips.

Correct: He recommended that each driver report his tips.

Sometimes we may use the conditional auxiliary verbs of could, should, or would to express the same sense.

Subjunctive:I wish he were kinder to me.
Conditional: I wish he would be kinder to me.

Note: In modern English, the subjunctive is found only in subordinate clauses.

Re: How To Use " I " ( Advice Needed Pls) by Nobody: 9:27pm On Jun 19, 2017
The reason is that the "to be" verb that follows 'I' is 'am' and the past tense of 'am' is 'was'.

Did anyone tell you that rules work in English? That's a lie. There are always exceptions.

I'm currently studying English and Literature so I know how crazy the language is.

you're wrong my sister.
Have you heard of subjunctive mood?
e.g "she walks as though she were a queen"

"He wished he were a lady"

" if I were Ade" not "if I was Ade"

This is called subjunctive mood. It it takes the plural past form of the "to be" verb.

Please don't speak " if I was Ade" in public

na naija we dey naaa. You can work as a proofreader, writer, critic, customer care, scriptwriter even in embassies and with the right connection, anywhere you want. The easiest job to get is lecturing and media stuffs.

If You are able to graduate with strong 2.1 most polytechnics will rush you because most people graduate with 3rd class and few with 2.2.

First class is almost impossible.

I'm studying ELS, that is, English and Literary Studies.
We do creative writing and other composition courses if you know what you are doing, you should be a good writer even before you get to 400L

no one has ever got first class in the history of our department. You might be lucky enough to get high CGPA in 100 and 200 Level but once you get to 300 level, the marking scheme will be so strict that getting an "A" would be almost impossible. It's 300 and 400 level that normally spoil the show.
