Evan has years of experience as a hardened criminal. He has enough money to buy his freedom but that will be difficult now because of the publicity the matter has received. Armed robbery is no longer fashionable because the robbers dont have a say on the size of the loot. When they rob, it is what they meet that they take. In case of kidnapping they can access the worth of their target before they strike and when they do, they are most likely to get what they request for unlike robbery.
