Hello babachi, from what I read on this thread, and discussions I have had with people living there, any health related field sells here. Someone talked about Saskatchewan and BC for medical doctors, that these provinces have some residency programs that help doctors settle in quicker. check out mails by @salford.

salford:
On my last trip to Estevan, Saskatchewan. Estevan is a vet small city..circa 10,000 people. It is well known as one of the last major city one encounters before entering the US via saskatchewan. I think the US border is about 50km drive away from Estevan and Minot in North Dakota is about 2hrs away.

Estevan is known for its Oil industry (Balkan Oil fields) and wheat/canola Farms. Alot of the residents are rich. Royalties from oil and large scale farming.

I think about 12 out of the 18 doctors in this small city are Nigerians.

Hope this helps.

@Babachi someone asked this early on in the thread and this is @Vcole's response

Hello. We may have got off on the wrong foot on the other thread as there was some info you didn't quite provide and I read you wrong. I would suggest you consider sask and nova scotia as recommended by shinarambo, i also know of some imgs who were able to get residency spots in alberta. I am not so clear on how the alberta system works but for saska and NS they have special progs for imgs.

Hope this helps

Most foreign doctors start with 'care jobs' which is closer to their profession while they write their MCC exams. If you've got atleast 2 years of independent practice and written MCCEE, you 'may' get a job in BC. There is currently a program for that.

You could also apply to be a Clinical Trainee being supervised by a physician but NO PAY just the clinical experience which will give you upper hand over other candidates, say, you want to apply for residency.

@babachi, you may wanna hold off on registering for any exams until you land. There is a possibility of a review which would reduce the exams to 2 instead of 3 starting from next year. Well, as I am sure you already know, no license means no doctor job. There are physician assistant/clinical assistant jobs but you need a certification for that which you would pay for and in the grand scheme of things you may not wanna do that. There are also medical assistant jobs....like office assistant for a clinic, pays well but you need certification too. Bottom line is to get any job that pays okay and then work on your licensing exams or going back to school, etc etc. Please bear in mind that it may take you anywhere between 12-24 months to get licensed....

Thanks vcole would keep in touch when I do land. From my search on carms I believe its only 2 exams for residency. Mccee and NAC. I don't even mind starting off as a physician assistant just that I read for Ontario you ll need to attend a 2yr program before you are eligible for certification.

Does a foreign doctor need extra training, certification or licencing to take up 'care jobs' in Canada, and in what province can one easilly get 'care Jobs' before one can start his/her medical career in Canada ?

It depends on the type of care job. All care jobs require, at minimum, First Aid certificate and Food Safe which you can get done in just ONE day each. Other than that some care jobs don't require any certification while others do. For example, to work in some 'residential group home', you need a Certificate in Health Care (Health Care Assistant Certificate) and a class 4 driver's license.

Provinces may vary in their requirements.

i followed a friend to SGI for his drivers test. In sask, all drivers test, insurance and registration are handled by a government agency called SGI. He is about to complete is Msc from the University of Regina. To get engineering positions without a drivers licence in Canada is tough. The license plus good drivers abstract (record) makes one a suitable candidate. He booked his test in a smaller city, and unfortunatly still failed. His 3rd attempt actually. He finally agreed to attend brush up classes.

Imo, the easiest way of passing the road test is to take up brush up classes at a driving school. Some of these driving schools know the exact routes the examiner tests people on. In alberta, calgary to be specific, it cost around $45 to 50 an hour for brush up lessons. It might be cost saving to attend brush up lessons and pass the test once or twice than relying on experience from Nigeria and failing the test more than 3 times or more.

I'm just curious. What is it exactly, that makes people fail driving tests? The roads seem wide and free. Pardon my naïveté.

Yes. it would get you back on track. I worked in a bank for years in the UK, but the amount being offered was very low compared to my previous earnings back in the UK so i returned to my first love i.e Engineering. I had to go back to school though as my engineering degree from Nigeria was hardly recognized.

I met a naija bros in University too back then. The bros had lots of SAP professional certificates from nigeria. He has a PMP too, but still returned to school to upgrade. Some very few are lucky though by getting jobs at their level of expertise without upgrading at a college or uni...

I'm currently facing a similar quandary. Have spent 9 years here in a Nigerian bank but I feel like I've only been wasting my time. I'm strongly tempted to fall back on my first degree (B.Sc Applied Microbiology) and pursue any of the 2yr After-Degree B.S.Nursing programs in Alberta or Toronto.

Did you consider age being a factor in your job prospects after going back to run another school program? Should I be bothered about that?

Road rules are followed and enforced fully here. Not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign is/can be an automatic fail.

Age is a factor. How you plan your life here depends on your age.
