Chapter 10.

Nate woke up and yawned

''Another work week'' he said amidst yawns.

He didn't pray since he wasn't the churchy type, one can't even tell if he is a christian, even though he keeps all the ten commandments like do not steal, do not kill, do not lie and so on, he still doesn't see any need for prayer or going to church.

After his usual 5 minutes morning exercise, the next place he rushed to was his bathroom and in less than 30 minutes, he was dressed for work, no need to wait for break as he inteads grabbing one or two doughnut and a drink to go from the city's best confectionary.

Today is the day he is finally going to meet his new secretary.

Jane or whatever her name is, he couldn't remember.

Even though she resumed a work day ago, he didn't get the chance to meet her, he was too busy working on the latest project that the federal government handed to them.

He left his P.A incharge of everything concerning the new secretary.

What kind of a boss is he?

A boss who employs someone without meeting her, he didn't have any spare time of going through her file which was sent to him, although he did catch a glimpse of her name.

Now fully dressed for work, he said goodbye to his parents and left for work.

K.C was sullen after just one week without Damilola, as she was busy tidying up and making final plans for her convocation which comes up in two weeks time.

His face lit in amusement when he remembered how she had freaked out when he mentioned who his father is to her.

''This girl is damn funny'' he muttered while lying in his bed.

Initially he didn't want to reveal his father's identity to her as he didn't like identifying with his father but a call from the nosy and sometimes cranky Maryann ruined it all, she had called to demand for her twenty thousand dollars, which sort of amused him, it wasn't like she did any work for him to warrant him giving her twenty thousand dollars and besides she has enough money in her personal account to buy whatever she wants.

''That little witch!'' he said with a straight face.

His hand unconsciously went to the turquoise blue envelope by his bedside

''Holy Matrimony indeed'' he mocked when at the first glimpse of the word written at the cover.

Mirabel had handed it over to him the previous night when he had honoured a dinner invitation by her.

She made him promise not to open it until he gets home which he did and kept to the promise.
But he wasn't a toddler, he knew a wedding invitation card when he sees one.

He opened it nonchalantly, it's not like he doesn't know the content already.

''Mirabel Chidera Onwuka weds Stephen Chigozie Nwokeoma''

He hastily went through the remaining write-up and threw it aside but not before admiring the beautifully designed blue wedding card.

''Mirabel and her love for blue colour'' he said and left for the bathroom, he has important school related things to do.

Ken walked into his office gloomily, the previous night his wife had woken him up and questioned his recent behaviour's and he felt bad when she began to cry that he no longer cared about her.

When she asked if she no longer looks attractive or if she was loosing shape due to the pregnancy, he had to give her a reasonable explanation for all the late nights he has been keeping and ofcourse he blamed it on work.

What else? There is no way he would confess to her that he is cheating on her; a pregnant woman who had all the right to every crazy character she displays during the period of the pregnancy, No way!

Worse still, how can he bring himself to tell her that he has been cheating on her with her former bestfriend, someone who claims to still be her friend.

He felt pity for his naive and too-trusting wife.

He momentarily shut his eyes as many thoughts battled for supremacy in his mind.

Finally, one thought came up won; one that had to do with him ending what is happening between him and Katherine.

He couldn't imagine breaking his home and his beautiful and caring wife leaving him all because he couldn't keep his testosterone hormone in check.

He brought his phone out of his pocket and dialled Katherine's number.

''Good morning baby'' she said.
He heard the excitement in her voice and immediately felt pity for her.

The determination to stop and fix everything that had gone wrong in his home overwhelmed the feeling of pity.

''Katherine, we need to end this?' he blurted out and she kept quiet for a considerable amount of time before speaking up.

''Alright, if you really want to end it then it's fine by me just come to my house this evening'' she said and ended the call before he got a chance to ask her why he should come to her house.

He bowed his head, he felt totally confused as different thoughts filled his mind.

What is he doing? This isn't him, this isn't the Ken he used to be

He took his bag and left the office, there's no way he will be able to concentrate again with all the chaotic thoughts going on in his mind.

''Good morning sir'' Nate's P.A greeted as soon as he walked into the office.

'Good morning'' he replied, more of a duty than an actual greeting.

''Why won't they stop greeting me'' he thought to himself and creased his brows in a frown.

Since the incidence with Bella, he became more hostile and uptight, unlike before when he used to be a carefree and jovial boss.

Workplace relationships does not always end well, no matter the kind of relationship.

Too bad, he had to learn it the hard way!

''Where is she?'' he asked the smiling P.A, as he wondered what was amusing him.

''who?''

Nate groaned '' The secretary, who else? He asked with widened eyes.

''she is in her office'' he replied and pointed to the office as if Nate does not know where the secetary's office is situated.

''Alright, thanks, 15 minutes after I go in, send her in'' he said and gave the P.A a Do-not forget look before walking away

''Yes sir'' the P.A replied but Nate kept on walking, he passed by the secretary's office and walked on straight ahead without so much as a nod nor a look in her direction.


He got to his office, sank into the chair and quickly brough out his breakfast, a doughnut, two swiss rolls, two cups of chocolate chip muffin and a can of softdrink.

He smiled satisfactorily and immediately set to work, first devouring the doughnut.

Not many people knew that the bossy and sometimes rude Nate loves snacks and junk food more than anything in the world.

His love for snacks remained after all the metarmorphosis his body, character and feelings has undergone.

Half way into his junky-breakfast, the door cracked open and he looked up like a wounded lion ready to attack.

When he saw the unfamiliar face, he immediately grabbed the file on his desk and opened it.

''Oh, the new secretary''

Just when he was thinking that she was well mannered for coming to work early, she decided to disappoint him by coming into his office unannounced and annoyingly interrupting his meal.

''That door has a purpose for being there'' He immediately threw at her when she made no move to fully walk in and shut the door or even say a word of greeting to him.

''I'm sorry sir'' she muttered but the look on her face said otherwise, she was far from being sorry.

''I said in 15 minutes, why are you here?'' he asked with an eyebrow raised upward.

''I waited and waited and I just couldn't wait anymore, I'm sorry'' she apologized again, this time around genuinely.

He looked down at the snacks and crumbs scattered on his desk and decided that the ealier she leaves the better for him.

''Go and come back in three hours time'' he commanded as soon as their eyes met.

''Alright sir, as you wish'' she said and left but Nate noticed the tone of sarcasm in her voice and he immediately concluded to keep his distance and stay far away from her.

Jane reached her office, closed the door and leaned against it, smiling dreamingly.

After spending so much time looking at her bosses pictures on the internet and fantisizing about him, she finally got to meet him and he looked more handsome in person.

She had earlier been warned by another nosy employee who was openly flirting with her during the time she came for the interview, that the boss could be annoying and over-bearing at times and she has just has a first hand experience of it and yet even with his arrogant look and behaviour she still couldn't take her mind off him, especially after seeing him eating those childish breakfast of his.

She smiled and walked to her desk, she needed to call her mum before finally settling down to work.

K.C's two hours search for the perfect convocation gift for Dami yielded no fruit.

He wasn't the gift type, since he usually gives money to all the women he has been involved with, afterall that was what they wanted.

But this case is different.

''Dami is a friend, she deserves something nice'' he murmured to himself before stopping at another gift shop.

After his meeting with the proffessor ended late in the afternoon, he rushed off thinking he would quickly get the gift then rush back home for lunch.

But, Two hours of fruitless search just proved how bad he is in that department and he wasn't about to ask for help from Maryann even though he knew she is an expert when it comes to things like this.

''I can do this myself'' he assured himself before going into the shop.

Ken parked outside Katherine's apartment with uncertainty.

''Come in'' came the gentle voice when he knocked.

He pushed open the door and walked into the Dimly lit apartment.

''Kath'' he called.

''Yes, Ken''

''please turn on the light'' he pleaded, darkness was never really a friend of his and neither will it ever be.

He couldn't see a thing, even though his eyes were trying hard to adjust.

''Okay'' she muttered and walked over to the switch and turned it on.

He gasped and his heart began beating unsteadily when he turned and saw her totally unclad before him, smiling.
