marv1: ....since we are too stupid to address the issue from its roots. Can anyone cure malaria fever by using paracetamol to treat pains and headache? If that is not stupidity, please let me know what else is stupidity. |

Laughing at your ignorance. Yes VGC is a private concern and in fairness to the developers, they have done all what they've to do. Is it the same developer that will stop other developers developing other newly built estates and structures obstructing free flow of water thru it's proper channels or the govt? Also if u know VGC well, you will know there's possibility of more water flowing thru d estate as d road / round about by estate entrance recently got upgraded by the govt and this could probably also leads to more inflow of water to the estate. And even talking about govt here, we r not referring to only VGC alone, we talking about lekki peninsula generally dis year. Go to Agungi/Ajiran road leading to Friends colony estate and northern foreshore estate this year and c what we r talking about judgedredd22: |

VGC folks can review their drainage plans. Possible create more drains or enlarge the present ones by deepening or widening them. This problem can still be solved but it will cost some money. |

I don't know if that is there own kind of money ritual, even with all the devastating flood, folks still live there and are even happiest and still making more money. Anyway, I love that estate, but they need to find solution to this menace, but if they love it that way, then no wahala, it's all good. |

Gerrard59: Sir,if you're asserting that the Underground Pipe-Jacking Drainage technology itself 'does not exist' then i'll suggest you do some looking up: because it is REAL,thus it exists (though nascent, it's application is being employed in parts of the world(Europe especially),of which flood control is also a part. http://www.pipejacking.org/about_pipe_jacking https://www.herrenknecht.com/en/innovation/know-how/pipe-jacking.html Secondly,it's not that i'm making a case for the previous administration or the present one,but being guided with a sense of fairness and objectivity it should however be noted that the government of the day is embroiled with other projects(lets not go into the socioeconomic-geared ones, due emphasis is on: road projects) mostly federal of significant economic value for the time being),having to deal with paucity of funds that the state government may not be able to shoulder alone. Also, the issue of environmental impact assessment on adjoining coastal communities where the rain water would be subsequently emptied, was brought to the fore, here is how it works:The underground pipe-jacking drainage involves running of pipes(not just any pipes...large, diameter steel pipes of specific thickness) some 30metres underground to collect water into a giant trough known as reservoir, which then empties rainwater into a nearby/stream,the force of the water current in (theory&reality) is capable of powering a turbine. The idea was,the flood at Nsikak Eduok Avenue (as at then) was to be channeled to Udo Udoma (by Tropicana Ent' centre) to be emptied at some streams at Ibesikpo Asutan LGA. Points of Note: >However as at Nov 30th,2016 Rt Hon(Elder) Aniekan Uko while addressing the commissioner for Works Mr.Ephraim Inyang-Eyen raised concerns on the environmental impact assessment of the underground drainage project which empties into streams in his community, with the view that finding lasting solutions to flood shouldn't be at the detriment of the people of his constituency. That while the State Government may have succeeded or in the process of solving the flood challenges in Uyo metropolis, several communities in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area are however bearing the brunt of this flood, such that the People of Mbikpong Ikot Edim, Afaha Ikot Osom, Ikot Udo Ekop and Nung Oku Akpasima Villages no longer have any source of potable drinking water,as a result of the contamination arising from the channeling of this flood water into the streams that served this communities. >WORRIED that the force of the flooding water, which has capacity of powering a turbine has rather unleashed this force on the only bridge that Ikot Udo Ekop Village with Ikot Ikere, Ebereotu, Nung Oku Akpasima and Mbikpong Ikot Edim villages and has led to the sudden collapse of the bridge, thereby cutting the link between these villages and the rest of the communities. >FURTHER WORRIED that as a result of the collapse of this bridge, traders and farmers who hitherto used to move their goods and farm produce to Nung Udoe, Afaha and Uyo Markets, now find it very difficult to do so, due to the inaccessibility of these communities, a situation that has futher worsen the economic woes of these rural traders and farmers, especially during this recession period.********* Pardon the long epistle: So you see sometimes in the process of nipping in the bud certain challenges, new ones tend to crop up,however that's not to imply that the government of the day in an effort to play it safe, shouldn't find it's way around such issues. I believe when an alternative route of channelling the flood in that area is found, the needful will be done. |
