I left our room to the living room,only to meet Tasha sitting there deep in thought. I sat on the sofa with a thud hoping to make her scared but she didn’t move a muscle.
“Was that supposed to scare me husband?”
“You’re like a tigress.”
She turned to me with the speed of light and I could swear I saw a thousand emotions displayed in her eyes. They vanished almost as soon as they appeared.
“I’m like Natasha. Tigress,no no.”
“Tasha I’m asking you once again…”
“I’ve got some sweet news for you darling.”
“I’m listening.”
“It’s going to change our lives forever but I’m sure you’ll appreciate the change.”
“Natasha,my ears are itching.”
“I’ll go get cotton bud.”She stood up and I pulled her down immediately.
“I mean my ears are itching to hear this news.”
“Oh okay. The thing is I’ve known about it for two weeks now but…”
“Tasha!” I half yelled.
She smiled and positioned herself on my laps. She pulled my head closer and whispered in my ears.
“Are you serious?” I nearly screamed.
“Shh” She put her index finger on my lips.
“So somebody’s gonna call me daddy real soon.”
“You’re a dreamer. I’m only few weeks gone.”
“It doesn’t matter. How’re you feeling?” I touched her neck and her forehead.
“Cut it out Elliot. Pregnancy isn’t a disease.” She returned to her former position on the couch.
“I know but I need to take extra care of you.”
“Good. That’s why you shouldn’t bother me to divulge any information till i.m ready or else we might lose our baby.”
“Fine then. Have it your way.”

Kara
I had just come back from the opening of my new boutique. It was indeed a lot of stress but I knew I just had to do it before the baby came. It was on days like these that I thanked God for blessing me with friends who had the right connections. Mum and dad bought the place for me. All I had to do was the interior and exterior décor . Today,I had enough guests at the opening. Fortunately,I had enough space to hold them all. Most of them were stunned that I had the strength considering my condition. I just kept smiling each time they talked about it. Thankfully,nobody asked about the father of my unborn baby. I couldn’t be more relieved.
I asked Pete to come spend the night at my place. Since Mille left,he practically lived at my house and supported me in whatever way he could. He was my guardian angel and I told him countless times how lucky I was to have him around. It was barely eight pm when sleep took over.I was so tired I had been having minor pains during the ceremony but I attributed it to stress. My sleep turned out to be not so peaceful as the pains kept coming at regular intervals. I checked the time again, It was 11pm. I decided to walk a bit around the house. Pete must heard when I left the room. He came out to meet me in the living room.
“Are you okay Kara?”
“Not so okay. I’m having pains at intervals.”
“I think we should get to the hospital.”
“I don’t think it’s…argh”
“See what I said. Come and sit while I get the car key.” He helped me to a chair. With each second,the pain kept increasing.
“Get the box from my room. Everything’s inside.” I managed to sy between the pains.
He went in and came out as fast as he could.
“Can you walk?” He asked. I couldn’t answer him.
“Damn it.” He ran out of the house with the box before coming back to take me to the car. He put my left hand over his shoulder and held it there with his while supporting my back with his right hand. Slowly,we managed to get to the car My water broke during our journey to the car.
He drove as fast as he could.
“Pete slow down. I don’t want to die.” I groaned as the pain struck again.
“I’m driving just 80km/h.”
I didn’t do him the honour of replying. As we reached the hospital, he sent for a stretcher and they came to pick me up immediately. I was lucky to register in this kind of hospital.
“I want him with me.” I screamed just when I saw Pete stop following the stretcher.
“Let him in.” I heard my doctor say.
He came in and stood beside my bed. I grabbed his hand tight.
“Push! push!”That was all I kept hearing for a long time. I was sure sweating it out for more than two hours,if my guess was right.
“I’m going to die Pete,I’m going to die.” Tears were flowing freely from my eyes.
“You’re not dying Kara. You’re strong,you’re going to see your son.” He kept talking and I was just nodding even thought the words were entering through one ear and speeding out the other.
Suddenly, I became very weak. I couldn’t find any strength to push anymore.
“Pete water.” I whispered. He was still telling me to hang on. I wanted to hang on for my baby but I couldn’t. I could feel life leaving me.
“You’re almost there Kara. Give me another push Kara. Don’t give up yet.” My doctor said.
“I can’t do this anymore. I’m tired.”

I honestly didn’t know what to do with her anymore. Her grip on my hand was loosening. I brought my phone out from my pocket to call aunt Liz. I explained to her the situation on ground briefly. She was already crying on the phone.
“Put the phone on loudspeaker.” She ordered and I obeyed. I tapped Kara repeatedly.
“Baby,don’t do this to me.” Mum sobbed over the phone.
Hearing mum’s voice seemed to pump energy into her.
“Mummy!”
“Push for me love.” Mum said.
She yelled as she tried pushing once again with eyes closed, teeth gritted and her head raised. The veins on her neck became so pronounced, I thought they would burst.
“Good, we’re almost there.”
“Arghh ! ” She groaned loudly. All went silent for some minutes. The silence was disrupted by the shrill cry of a baby.
“Congratulations Kara. Your bouncing baby boy just announced his arrival. Time of birth is 2:10 AM.” The doctor said.
“Congratulations sweetheart.” Aunt Liz said.
Kara smiled with her eyes closed.
“Kara?” Aunt Liz called. She didn’t answer, her eyes were still closed. “Pete what’s going on?” She asked.
“Mum,I’m fine.”She answered weakly.
“Thank goodness. You need your rest dear. I’ll call you soon.”
“She nodded ma.” I answered for her and cut the call.
“Thank you Pete.” She whispered to me,lightly squeezing my hand.
“Congratulations our new mother.” She smiled as she closed her eyes to rest after almost three hours of pain.”
I walked out of her room with Doctor Olamide after watching her sleep so peacefully.
“Thanks pal.” I shook his hand.
“What are friends for? She’ll need to eat when she wakes up. It’s still very early and our canteen is closed.”
“I’ll make something for her myself.”
“Alright. Just don’t make something heavy for her. Have you seen the baby yet?”
“I’ll check on him before I leave.” We shook hands again before he asked a nurse to take me to the baby.
He was just so small and cute.His skin was so light and his cheeks pink. He could barely open his eyes well. I knew Kara would be so happy to see her baby. I didn’t spend much time with him. I had to rush home.
I thought of what to prepare for her. Her fridge was stocked with many things. I remembered her jokingly asking if I knew how to prepare pepper soup because that was the first thing she wanted to taste after delivery.
I hurriedly prepared it just as she had taught me,taking care not to add too much pepper. Aunt Liz called again and told me to take hot water in a flask and beverages along with me. She said she would take the first flight available to Abuja. I did as I was told.
I took my bath before I set out to the hospital again. I also picked her phone,camera and few things she had forgotten. I ended up spending close to two hours at home before leaving for the hospital. She was awake when I got there,cradling her baby in her arms.
“You’re awake?”
“Yes I am. You’re back.”
“Yeah. I didn’t expect you to be awake by now.”
“I think I slept for an hour or so. I just remembered I’m now a mother and I hurried out of dreamland.”
“You’re not serious. Is he sleeping?”
“Yeah he is. Come and hold him a bit.” I went to her side and she placed the baby gently in my arms.
“He’s so small and cute.” I smiled at the sleeping child.
“Yes he is.” She yawned.
“Kara go back to sleep.I’ll be here with the baby.”
“Thanks Pete.You’ve been a great help.”
“Anything for you Kara. Now,get some rest.” She laid down properly on the bed and within minutes,she was fast asleep. I cradled the baby some more before placing him as gently as I could into his cot. I silently prayed that I should place him well because I had never carried a baby that was just a few hours old. I took pictures of him with my phone and camera. I sent them to Aunt Liz via whatsapp. I knew my motherly aunt wasn’t having even a minute of rest over there in Uyo. I placed a chair between Kara’s bed and her baby’s cot and helped myself on it. I fell asleep while watching both of them sleep soundly.
