Chukwudi Akasike, Mudiaga Affe and Peter Dada

The member representing Calabar-South, Bakassi and Akpabuyo in the House of Representatives, Mr. Essien Ayi; a Muslim leader in Rivers State, Alhaji Abubakar Orlu, and the Bishop, Akure Diocese of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Simeon Borokini, have said that Nigeria needs restructuring.

They spoke at separate occasions on Sunday.

Ayi specifically called for the devolution of powers from the centre to the component units of the federation as one of the steps towards restructuring.

Ayi, who noted this during an event in Calabar on Sunday, said that the call for restructuring should be looked into.

According to the lawmaker, too much power is concentrated at the centre and this does not augur well for the development of the country.

He said that the centre had become too powerful to the detriment of the states, adding that the situation should be reversed.

“For me, more powers should be given to the states and we make the centre less attractive. There is so much power at the centre and the states cannot function well.

Ayi, who is Chairman of the House Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, also said that the time was ripe for local government areas to be given full autonomy.

Also, Borokini called on the acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, to accept the call for restructuring for the country to overcome its social and economic problems.

He also said there was a need for the Federal Government to look into the report the 2014 confab report.

The clergy man, stated this in a chat with journalists at the 2nd session of the Twelve Synod of the Akure Diocese, held at St. James’ Anglican Church, Ita Ogbolu in the Akure-North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Orlu stated that the Federal Government had not been able to show anything in terms of projects in the South-South and South-East, adding that the issue of being voted for or not should not be a determinant for the development of a particular area.

Even now an average Northerner is not better than his/her southern counterpart. The oligarchs in the North the chief opponents of restructuring and anything that could change the current status quo.

Take what is yours. This kind of your talk emboldens the North.
