please and please dont quit ur job for any msc. it is true the stress is much. i am currently a masters student at unilag too and mine is a part time and yes the fees are high cus it is Law and i close by 5pm too from work. what i do is follow a colleague than jumping a public transport and it makes me get to school in a favorable time. And the beginning would be very stressful but with time, u get to adjust plus ur class governor gets to fix lecture time in a flexible way. i moved from home which is on the island and got a self con close to unilag gate. thereby, reducing the stress on my own part than dashing back to the island by 8pm. besides, when you start classes and everyone comes in late because they are all coming from work. you will get the picture. plus msc does not guarantee you a job after. pls make a wise decision o.

Words on marble. On point!

Pls dont quit your job, have you even considered Unilag criteria for masters?
Did you have good grade in your first degree?
Is your O'level à sitting?
You have not even started saving, learn to save atleast 30% of your income first, then budget on the remaining 70.
Dont live certainty for uncertainty.
What is even the assurance that Unilag will admit you for the masters?
Be wise!

I believe you have read all the posts above: they are unanimous in saying "Do NOT" resign your appointment for an MBA.

The average graduate in Nigeria earns btw N30-N60k. If you must do your masters,

I guess they've all said it already. But just in case you are still in doubt, do not try it. I repeat, do not quit your job!

Hello. I said that an MBA from LBS is valued but not oné from Unilag.
She can take professional courses and keep working and getting promoted cos experience is key. She doesnt sound like she has even worked for 5 years so talks of MBA at this moment is totally unnecessary.

You said UNILAG MBA ia useless? How many do you have

OP, someone I know did a part time MBA program in unilag but she didn't quit her job, she waited for the right opportunity to use it, today she's a senior staff in a very good bank

Hello House,

Kindly advise me on which way to follow. I currently earn 150k per month and I am thinking of enrolling for an MBA in Unilag. My headache is I will have to pick the full time option because it is cheaper and has better lecture hours, which means I have to stop work. Classes are from 9am-2pm weekly. The fee is about 200k.
I am skeptical about the part time option because its classes are during the evenings from 4pm to 8pm. I live and work on the island(Ajah) and close by 5pm. My boss won't allow me close by 3pm. He might agree to close at 4pm but even if he agrees to 3pm, there's no way I will get to Unilag before 5:30pm(on a no traffic day) by public transport. And lets say I finish lectures by 8pm, with the traffic and all I might be getting home by 11pm or so(dangerous for a girl). And it will so tell on me because the stress will be too much.(I am already a Lekpa I don't want to disappear). The koko again is that the fees for part time is about 500k.(I just started earning 150k ooh shocked and also ponzi finish my money at the beginning of the year. GREED. don't blame me ohh, many people fell victim with me).
The last option is the Executive MBA. Classes are on saturdays from 8pm to 4pm. The fee is about 2Million. I won't even go there.
If I say I should do another Masters course it will have to be a science course which are all full time.

My question is should I take the risk to forfeit my job and do my MBA? The forms are out. I want to prepare my mind before buying the form(N22,500). I really want an upgrade to my certificate. I also need money to keep me going because there is no one to lean on. Everybody is forming OYO. And I also don't want to regret embracing an opportunity now that I have money for fees. No one knows tomorrow. Please advise oooohhhhhh mbok

Firstly, I can see some people already giving you phone numbers. Please don't get scammed again.

Secondly,

What is the guarantee that the money you have will run a full time program for you?
What is also the guarantee that your part time program won't affect your job?
What is the guarantee that you will get another job if you loose this one?

My advises to you are:

1. Be sure your future is secured before making critical decisions now. If the job you have guarantees you high level of job security, then leaving it for MSc isn't worth it.

2. MSc can't be the only way to upgrade one's self. You can acquire skills on the job and through self study. You can also run professional certification programs and write professional exams.

3. Even when you want to establish a business, you ought to be sure that the business has already began to generate revenues and has began to win over loyal customers before you consider resigning from your job. You may not even need to resign if you have competent hands managing the business and it can stand without your physical presence.

4. There are many MSc. holders out there without job, what will make you stand our from them? That special thing that makes you stand out from them, will become your defining factor. So if you do your MSc and you're just a regular guy that quit his job to build educational qualifications, then be sure to join the queue comprising of millions of jobless BSc and MSc holders out there.

It's only in Nigeria that organisations consider an academic qualification before professional experience. In advanced countries, you can become anything in any organisation with your first degree coupled with your professional experience. Can you believe that you can even secure lecturing job BASED on your experience? In Nigeria,it is academic qualification first, which is why we are not moving forward .Please, dont leave your job because of any academic qualification ,gather enough experience and more money first.

My sister, save for as long as you can, look for cheap masters program in countries like Germany, Finland, Norway, Canada, US and New Zealand. After the M.Sc, you would be given some years to work over there. The experience will open doors for you here if you decide to return home.

Pls do no quit your job. Jobs are quite difficult to come bye these days and considering your current earnings which is really comfortable. It was on this forum some few days back that a UK masters degree holder in Law was complaining that an employer offered her 35k as salary. You can imagine. Moreso an MBA does not give you any edge neither will it increase your pay after its acquisition.Fortunately am also in the procurement proffesional. I have a B.sc, M.Sc, M.B.A, C.I.P.S, M.C.I.A, F.C.A.I with over 10 years working experience but the salary isn't commensurate with the qualification and experience gained over the years. For you in the procurement profession I'll just advice you do your professional certification in C.I.P.Sin Nigeria or C.I.P.S UK which can be acquired with little or no stress if you want you globally accepted certification. With that you'll be ok for now while the masters can wait till when you're more comfortable.Your job first

Do not leave your job. Many pple register as full time students in dat unilag and still work full time. There is a way around these things. At masters level you dont need to attend evry class. It's not undergrad. Just av a good way of communicating with other classmates regularly.

150k job is somtin o. Dont quit it. Jobs are very hard to get in dis economy. From experience you badly need a steady source of income to run thru a masters program. It can be very hectic and difficult to run a masters if you dont av money. You will regret quitting your job and feel like quiting d masters over time.
Hold tight to dat freaking job for now. Masters or no masters. Evn masters holders still finish and start job hunting

Hi OP,

Since you don't mind doing an MBA here in Nigeria that doesn't disturb your job, why not find out about OAU Ife's Executive MBA. It's strictly weekends, it's pretty fast and it's not affected by any strike action. It costs 480K and payment per semester is allowed (1st Year 1st Sem.- 150K, 1st Year 2nd Sem.- 120K, 2nd Year 1st Sem.- 110K, 2nd Year 2nd Sem.- 100K).

However, you'll have to be travelling to school for lectures two weekends each month (the 2nd and the 3rd weekends), as attendance is usually taken and it attracts some marks, but there's no minimum attendance requirement, and it's not as if you are hindered from sitting for exams, nor is it the case that you lose your studentship, if you don't attend lectures regularly; attendance forms part of your CA and you only lose marks for the days you don't attend classes. Lectures hold at Moro (a town near Ile-Ife) where the school's Centre for Distance Learning is located.

There's usually an entrance exam, but it's not so difficult, and almost all the candidates are usually given admission (based on my observations sha, I may be wrong though). New students start lectures around Nov./Dec. each year, so I believe applications are still open, but still find out sha!

I wish you all the best!

Don't u know u were lucky by getting that Job? Well, if ur connect is as strong as a 8G wireless, u can resign and free space for another person who is unemployed or underemployed.

@op Just like others before me have been saying, masters does not necessarily translate into better working conditions, better pay and all...In fact, some fields value professional certification more than masters.

Lemme give u a gist.; I have two friends both finished their degrees together and one took his time and searched for job to the farthest parts of Lagos while the other decided to take the masters option since he still had parents who could bail him.

Shortly the job seeker got a job that affords him to eat transport himself, provide little support to his parents on the home front and save d remaining little which he used in registering for a professional certification.

Fast forward the masters guy is done with masters and now seeing for any job that can just free him from depending on his parents. Meanwhile ourbday one job seekers friend now has about 2years experience under his belt and a professional certification.

Who do u think has done the wisest thing?

What am saying is, try and get a professional certification, add it to ur job experience and u will even be able to afford a more expensive masters program sef.

That would not be a very viable idea except you'd want to go with the Distance Education method since it'll allow you to work and study at the same time.

Op, there are people with foreign masters that are being offered 35k salary. Please hold on to your job and do the part time degree. When you finish, you will have a job to sustain you into the next offer. Plus they won't offer you less than you currently earn. Free story o!
