I paid 90k into that unity bank account before my oral PhD defence and also paid another 89k to the department because the PG school claimed they couldn't access the fund in unity bank.
I was told that from the month of July/2017 no PG student will pay to the department again but they will maintain the unity bank account. I was also made to understand that When your result is ready, you will be issued a cheque to get the money you paid for the oral defence. I still don't believe that Uniben PG school is playing game.

The University of Benin Council/ Management pulls out from Treasury Single Account (TSA),
Opens an account with Unity Bank, Uniben Branch: Account title: Uniben Staff Retreat/ External Assessors, Account no: 0014419470. The aforementioned account is used to drain postgraduate students on or before completion of their program. The PG students are forced to pay #30000, #60000, and #90000 for PgD, MSc and PhD students respectively into the account all in the name of paying for External Examiners for project/oral defense, while the students through their departments are also mandated to pay External Examiners at the point of oral defense on the premise that the school cannot access the account domicile at unity Bank. Studying in UNIBEN and upon completion of your study, you are made to realize that you cannot get your result approved by the senate or do the relevant clearance after approval by senate to get your statement of result/ certificate until you pay the said amount. Our certificates are being kidnapped for a ransom fee of #30000, #60000 and #90000 for PgD, MSc and PhD students respectively. Fellow Nigerian students, are postgraduate students to pay for the retreat of staff in the university of Benin? Pls let's join hands together and help stop this corrupt practice in the institution.

EFCC, ICPC and other relevant financial institutions should conduct proper investigation on the issue to stop this corrupt act.

Will you keep your mouth shut if you don't have any meaningful thing to say.
You can counter it if you have the contrary evidence but to the best of my knowledge and based on what I have experiencd UI during my postgraduate days, I can authoritately that University of Ibadan will not do such.

frankly speaking Op, there are schools with worse payment systems.
ABSU for instance demands about 50k just for acceptance fee into PG programs.
You can imagine the total amount you'd be required to pay before you get your certificate.
The fact is that the educational system in Nigeria is very deplorable with lack if funding and corruption topping the list.
It's a reflection of the general ills in thr country.
For now, if you can, run your PG program in s university in the country and if you can not, get the hell out of the system and school somewhere else outside the country. when you come back and still meet the status quo, you do your best to effect change.

PG is a different ball game altogether... During my days in Unizik I got to understand that other than the regular undergraduate programme of federal universities, FG don't send subvention. So universities are forced to use IGR to run programmes outside the regular undergraduate, hence the incessant, unwarranted and bogus money PG students are extorted. In Unizik they used the "extorted" money to eat lunch. I remember when I was doing my clearance, once its break time you will junior works, who I assume are mostly corpers, taking food from the secretary's office to serve the other staff. I don't know if they are still doing that. No meaningful thing they will use the money to achieve. No equipped PG lab or library, just wasting money on frivolities... mtchewww

I pity your condition. If you think you're a Msc holder in a glorified primary school like UI then you need to realize that Msc degree from a useless school like UI isn't recognized.
You need to pursue your Msc degree afresh.
But try another university.

I felt like telling you sharaaap... but I had to control myself, Please don't be offended with my thoughts. UNIBEN's acceptance fees use to be 45k but now 65k. PG form use to be 12.5k but now 25k. School fees 100k and they'll stall you till you stay 3 years. 100k x 3 = 300k. The programme can be so protracted that you'll hate yourself. Since NUC has mandated that M.Sc programmes last maximum of 3 years, UNIBEN has made the 3 years the norm forgetting that M.Sc ought to be 1.5 - 2 years and the 3 years max should be an exception.
The above submissions are facts.

University of Benin Pg school is running an extortion on its students. After they paid 45,000 naira as acceptance fees, 110,000 for school fees and now another stupid payment for Thesis and what so ever... And they are complaining of no researchers or discoveries in Nigeria, when the few old fools in the system would rather rob from the younger ones who want a better future for themselves and the nation. Its a Big Pity
