Ask yourself, how many times do you hear of collapsing buildings in Abuja?

Bear in mind that this is the place where buildings are going up faster than anywhere else in this country. It is so simply because Govt agencies are constantly breathing down the necks of developers, always visiting sites and "disturbing" contractors handling the projects.

Everywhere else, the authorities lack empowerment, are grossly understaffed, lazy and corrupt. All over the world, developers cut corners and make horrible choices which must be put right by authorities. A very poignant example is the recent London inferno that killed dozens, which was aggravated due to flammable external wall cladding material.

Why will a building collapse and all that concrete just crumbles like biscuits? Why will a building fall and not even resemble a building afterwards?

It is because of corrupt, selfish people cutting corners without the authorities stopping them. Period.

There are NO skyscrapers in ALL of Nigeria, not even in Lagos. Skyscrapers are so tall you cannot build them using concrete. They are constructed from steel and glass. Is there any such building in this country?

Probably caused by the use of shallow foundations i.e. strip or raft even.

Heavy rain will simply wash away and erode the ground supporting the shallow foundation footings leaving the building to collapse.

A 4 storey building should have piled foundations which go much deeper into the ground.

Why won't buildings collapse when every bricklayer now claims to be ''building engineer'' Government has to put measures in place to check these recurring incidences of building collapse especially in the east where every tom, d!ck and harry now claims to be building engineer. It's getting out of hand!

Another building collapse in Obosi, Anambra state. Our leaders are the reasons especially the legislators are the reason we still encounter such incidence.

What should be done.

It's good the policy of govt in confiscating every site of building collapse, but alot still need to be done, a law must be enacted to checkmate our quack engineers and contractors. Any contractor that supervised a building that later collapsed must be made to spend like a year in prison or an option of ten million naira while the owner hands-off the land.

With such enactment, no engineer/contractor risk embarking on a substandard project while the client ensure he employ competent hands. Our legislators must sit-up, Rommy Obi, Nikky Ugochukwu, Ben Nwankwo must sit up.

There would be no need to seize such lands if the state ministry of works supervised the foundation of that building and each Decking too.
