The government has said that it has suspended crude oil exploration in Borno State and would only resume if it gets sufficient security clearance guaranteeing the safety of its personnel and operations.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr. Ibe kachikwu, also stated that it presently cannot confirm the rescue of its personnel by the military and is still awaiting confirmation from the security agencies.

He further stated that the military is still collating data concerning the attack and cannot confirm the actual number of people who died.

Oil prospectors abducted by Boko Haram militants during an attack in Magumeri in Northern Borno State on Tuesday were officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and some members of staff of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) who had gone to make a final collection of soil samples in preparation for oil exploration in the area.

The group was traveling in a convoy of eight Hilux vans under the protection of Nigerian troops.

All the vehicles were snatched by the militants. Some of the soldiers in the convoy were killed while othersescaped to a nearby village.

The abducted UNIMAID staff include Dr. J.V Militus, Dr. N.Y Solomon, Manaja N Uba, Yusuf Ibrahim, Alhaji Kolo, Daniel Birma and a technologist from the Department of Soil Sciences whose name was simply given as Mohammed.

Should have focused on Benue trough and Ondo first. I doubt they stop completely.

After France announced earlier this month that it plans on banning new petrol and diesel cars by 2040, now the British government is about to announce similar measures this week.
