A drug-smuggling submarine capable of carrying four tons of cocaine has been seized by police and troops in Colombia. The million pound electrical 'narco-submarine' was found by the army before it could transport its illicit cargo. The submarine, which is nine metres (30 feet) long and four and a half metres (15 feet) wide, was going to be used to transport drugs into Central America. The submarine was discovered during an operation around the rivers of SanJuan and Baudo. The ELN guerrilla group, who are currently negotiating with the Colombian government over a peace deal are the most likely owners of the vessel.

The submersible was built out of sheet metal and had electrical jet propulsion engines powered by more than a hundred batteries. Police believe the submarine would have taken about five months to build at a cost of 4,500 million COP (1.1 million GBP) and it would have been incredibly difficult to detect underwater because it was electric. The submarine also had an underwater camera to help its crews steer during their underwater drug smuggling voyages. It will now be transported to a naval base in the south-western Colombian department of Valle del Cauca.
