plessis:How many Nigerian students VOLUNTARY opt for those disciplines as first choice? Most persons who study(ied) Physics applied for Engineering and because they were not given, opted for Physics. Ditto Mathematics. I know a school where in her Physics Department, everyone expect one chose Engineering during their application. This post is saying you can have a career in the same fields as the engineers. |

Gerrard59:Why do you like making noise. I applied physics first choice. Explain the bold sentence. Do you know that physics is engineering and engineering is not physics? Currently, solar physics is being done under physics department, in the future, an engineering department called solar engineering will come out. So how does physics depend on engineering. |

Jarus:That is the point. They are not well informed. Nigerians select a course they don't have passion for, one they feel will fetch them job. The truth is that even medicine graduate still earn less than 50k a month. That is the hard truth many do not know. |

Zoology. People see us zoologists as inferior to doctors when even the doctors are scared of what we know and can do. |

Well for anyone who is interested in learning, except for passion there is no course that is useless. I finished with a 2.1 in sociology and today i work in a management consulting firm as a Business Analyst, founded by Ex-mckinsey consultants, though i got in through the graduate trainee program and have used less than 2 months on the job, have come to realize that rarely does your course of study matter, what gives anybody the competitive advantage is their ability to think wide and develop a depth of problem solving skills. In my team we have an accountant, physicist, Micro-biologist, Doctor, and an Engineer amongst all, we all share ideas on different things and no project is the same, the Doctor is very good in Financial Modelling, the physicist is good at client relations and i am probably good at problem solving and economic analysis. The work place is becoming competitive and the so called useless courses offers diversity, math's is hot cake due to its varied application, infact if am to go back to university i would choose it over any other course.... Public health graduates who are smart would probably do better than an average medical doctor in the long run due to emerging problems in developing countries. Nursing is definitely hot cake considering the obvious truth that we don't enough of them Nigeria has the largest number of Children outside school....thats a future market for education. If only people are aware of the importance of language in this globalized world, you wont underestimate anyone who is multilingual(international wise) A good sociologist is an hot cake in the job market, let me cite two examples of myself, have worked on a com-missed project to access the Risk Mitigating strategies of FMCG's with production plants in Boko Haram territories, have done market entry analysis for an intending FMCG company on consumer behavior and its possible effect on profitability. Same as working with a Fintech company on how to manage its market penetration strategy... Am sure every discipline has its own value, only ignorant people discriminate certifications are even more important this days, you want to be a top Finance guy, just pass CFA level one, |

JARUSHUB:Quite an educating. piece ...... thumbs up. In addition, I heard the council that regulates nursing has set a deadline of 2019 for all nurses to possess at least a degree in nursing so degree holders in nursing have an edge there and have high chances of employment......... also sociology graduates have an edge in the security services. |

5, Hospitality and Tourism Management Hospitality and tourism sector is growing in Nigeria. Not many people have the specialized skills. With a degree in such hardly popular course, you could a chance of early mover advantage. Whether advertised or not advertised, you could write to 30 hotels, with good cover letters, and sell yourself. After all, you have an uncommon degree that is relevant to them. You are not likely to be turned down in all. 6, Physical & Health Education Yep!!! Let's go there! Studying one at the moment. |

mrphysics:You are a rarity. I gave you stats, the lad was the only Physics student (Over 20) who chose it as his first choice. The rest were there because the school 'gave' them Physics. Guess what they applied for initially? Engineering disciplines. Yes, I agree that Physics is the bedrock of engineering. However, most Nigerian students do not know that or care to know. They believe a Physicist will likely become a teacher and an only engineer is needed in highly technical positions. Most Nigerian students are unfortunately not explained to career choices when they leave secondary school (It is changing tho). Which is why persons will just accept a course to 'leave home' and 'obtain a certificate'. I'm not downgrading Physics (heck, if I was exceptional in Maths and Physics, I'd have studied it). However, stats prove this OP's post correct. Another example....a friend's sister chose Civil Engineering as her first choice. Unfortunately, she did not get it, guess what? The school offered her Physics, which she accepted and is in her sophomore. Does that mean she cannot have a career in a field where engineers hold sway? No. That is what the post is implying. |

I don't think chemistry and Nursing is underated in Nigeria......with the rapid used in chemicals in Nigeria on daily basis.....chemistry/industrial chemistry might be the most lucrative Job in five to ten years to come though most of the chemist play a second fiddle to chemical Engineering student in the oil/gas sector, they also play a second fiddle to a pharmacist in the drug company but chemist comes first in most of Nigeria industry today e.g chemist comes first in the plastic company, food processing company, fertilizer, beaury, milling, bagco, cement company e.t.c chemistry and Nursing na better course ooo! |
