No it doesn't.

Help you learn new words? Yes

Help you remember spellings of old words you know but have prolly forgotten? Maybe.

But to learn how to spell? NO!

You have to LEARN how to spell; Consciously and conscientiously.
It does. When you see a new word, three things come to mind:

Its usage

Pronunciation

And spelling

*BREAKING_NEWS* They are now in # lagos state oooo! This happened in someone's Estate this Morning in ipaja. A lady called an Aboki as we all call them, a shoe maker to help fix her slippers. She allowed him stay in their compound, while she went back inside to continue with what she was doing. When he was fixing her slippers, he added something under before stitching it back. Luckily for the Lady, her landlord was at the balcony watching the ABOKI without his knowledge. When he was through, he called her to tell her that he has finished. She came out, he told her to try it on her leg to make sure it was OK. Her landlord shouted from upstairs 'no oh, don't put your leg in that slippers I'm coming. He came downstairs; forced the Aboki to put his leg in the slippers, the Aboki refused. Then he alerted neighbours. So,they all gathered, forced him to wear the slippers. Immediately he put his leg in the slippers, Guess what happened?? Hmmmmmmmmmm !!!!! The slippers cut... He did not sew it well.
Sense fall on you.

You have to make more efforts to know the spelling, you check your dictionary for it's usage and most times have to go back to the dictionary (two, three or even more times) to confirm that your spelling of the word you learnt a while back while reading is correct.

There are over a million and one words you have come across one time or the other but you still can't spell. Why? Reading and noticing new words is not enough, you have to practice and relearn it before it sticks.

It depends on how often you use it and how quick you can learn.

Usage, pronunciation and spelling of a new word happen simultaneously.

Reading can improve your spellings if you do not read Nigerian blogs. The bloggers themselves are very poor in spelling and sentence construction
Re: Does Reading Improve Your Spelling? by Enare(m): 7:57am On Aug 09, 2017
But to an extend, reading contributes to improve your spelling skills coz you gonna find new words sometimes, word you thought are spelled in your way might not be correct only to find their true spellings as u scurry through the paper.
Re: Does Reading Improve Your Spelling? by Nobody: 8:17am On Aug 09, 2017
Actually, I disagree. Strongly. You get used to seeing certain words and their spellings. I finally learned to spell the word 'receive' properly because I read a lot when I was younger. I would always be unsure whether the 'i' was before the 'e' or the other way round but reading helped clear up the confusion. Its the same for a lot of other words.

I don't completely agree with you because through reading one's spelling skills can improve. A child has no excuse misspelling any word he or she has seen while reading a text.

Yes, spelling requires extra skills, because some words (sight words) have little or no relationship with how they're pronounced. E.g.Again, Chaos, Colour etc. You have to learn the peculiarities.

For proficiency in spelling, read a lot of texts, learn pronunciation (that's why they get professionals to pronounce words at spelling bee competitions), you need a knowledge of prefixes and suffixes with a keen concern for the double and single letters, E.g 'actually' vs ' slowly' or instances when the root word looses a letter and when it doesn't. E.g 'Noticeable' vs 'Movable'

More than anything else, constant practice is key.

Even Nigeria governments and their officials stopped reading that is the reason Nigeria refused to develop economically.

It depends on what you are reading. Reading improves the vocabulary and spelling because as you read, you learn new words and also get correct spellings of words.
