The widows of men who were hanged by Nigeria’s military government in the 1990s have launched a civil case against Shell, accusing it of complicity in their husbands’ executions.

Esther Kiobel, the widow of Dr Barinem Kiobel, and three other women whose husbands were hanged in 1995, served a writ in a Dutch court this week, following a 20-year battle with the oil giant.

Kiobel’s husband was executed along with the writer and human rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, and seven other men, who became collectively known as the Ogoni nine. They were hanged in a military court following a peaceful uprising by 300,000 Ogonis against Shell’s widespread pollution in Ogoniland...

I have never seen a region so docile like the Niger Delta. why shell and shell bp is still standing and living fat from oil proceeds till today is still a mystery considering the cankerous and inhuman damage they have done to the region.

The bombing of "militants" every now and then by the government ensures they will continue for a long time to come.

When you put it this way, you disregard the inherent complexities encountered by my people and oversimplify the methods employed by these agents of imperialism who actively fund the leaders of third world countries in keeping their people subjugated.

History has shown repeatedly, as in the cases of Cuba, Nicaragua, Afghanistan, Northern Ireland etc that the only potent way to resist extractory imperialism is through armed struggle against the imperialist forces and their conspiratory state actors.

The Ogoni Nine were aware of this principle and allegedly went after these state actors, which resulted in the death of some. Shell had the foresight to recognize what was about to happen and had the leaders of the movement executed through the military govt.

They will learn a lesson repeated through history that occupation is not victory.

up till date no shell investment has been targeted. just like u said armed struggle is the only way. the Niger delta has been fighting the servants(Nigeria) leaving the master(imperialist) to enjoy. the moment ND starts targeting ALL shell interests and infrastructure that's the day their success story would start.

Claiming no Shell investment has been targeted is poor information on your part. Maybe you should do a bit more study on it. ALL oil majors operating in the ND have had their terminals targeted and attacked. Shell lifted just two months ago their force majeure on Forcados oil and Bonny Light crude oil after persistent attacks that cut Nigeria's crude oil daily output by more than 60%.

The agitators are starting to learn a valuable lesson: Go after oil platforms and it will be repaired but let's see how eager they will be to replace their human resources.

that's the problem with the ND struggle, attack, collect ur share and move on, why stop the attack, what has changed. next year another group would spring up and the same cycle continues until the oil is depleted and the region massively polluted. people can't get portable drinking water in most areas of bayelsa, delta, etc because of oil spillage and pollution and you know why shell and other MNCs won't take the ND serious because once they release few dollars everyone stars answering their name.
