How can blood flow upwards from the lungs back into the trachea?!

It seems you are a medical student, but you simply do not know how this man died. I would have suggested he died of a haemothorax i.e. blood in the pleural cavity compressing the lungs, but I don't know that from just looking at him. However, I cannot decipher how blood in the lungs can re-diffuse upwards back into the trachea.
