My Oga, no be small thing o, it an eye opener, i must confess that it was painfully exciting. Anyway let me discuss my mistakes

MY MISTAKES:
1.Stress: My mistakes started from the construction of my pond, rather than use the conventional outlet with big pipe that will allow water to flow rapidly from the pond thereby reducing the stress period of fish during changing of water, my outlet can take as much as two hours before water is drain from the pump and another 3 hour to pump water into the pump because i used the smallest pipe to run water from the tank to the pond.

2. Seed: Though i bought my fingerling from a reputable farm, yet what i bought was not sorted to guarantee even growth thereby making some fish to grow faster than the other
Also my seed cannot be said to be the first set which some people call shooters

3. Feeding: Rather than start with 1.2-1.5 which contain 56% protein to boost their growth regardless of what they ve be eating from where bought it, I started feeding my fish with 2mm simply because the fish was already eating 2mm from where i bough it.

4. Water Management: From my previous write-up, it was clear to me that there was no magic that would have made my fish attain reasonable weight at 4month

Before, i talk about my success, my Ogas who i believe have once be in my shoe should share with us how they were able to turn things around when they found themselves in this my situation

When I say 1kg of melange, I do not mean a single table size catfish. When buyers buy, they buy per kg ( 3 or 4 fishes makes a kg of melange) so it makes business sense to estimate cost per kg of melange instead of unit cost of melange. It is erroneous to estimate a unit cost of melange as you did because no 2 persons sell melange at same average size.

Chairman the only thing that went wrong so far is the water management, without a proper water management nothing can be achieved. 2mm is ideal for feeding fingerlings, most farmers think the higher the protein the better but the truth is catfish requires only 28% crude protein but with a balanced amino acid at the end of the day they achieve almost same result as long as you keep your water clean and you feed your fish regularly to satiation..

hmmm.. very true. This also applies to humans and other animals. The quality of the protein is more important than the quantity. High quality protein contains all essential amino acids. Thanks for this info.

Depends also on the feed, I don't use coppens, multi or zeigler to feed melange which is more costlier, I use either vital, top or crown feed to reduce cost drastically.. I project two make a kg.

Thanks , if i use any of these nigerian produced feeds { vital, top, crown} to feed my fish to TABLE SIZE, will i be able to get the same result as when i use any of the three imported brands mentioned above { copens, multi, zeigler }. Thanks.

my oga I want to sincerely apologize I've not been contributing on this thread since 2013 that I've been following. I used to be a farm manager of a very large fish farm (over 80,000 capacity)in badagry since 2013 but now I've established my own....almost nothing is hidden to me when it comes to fish farming. Take note also that Formalin is a strong chemical if miss used it can wipe out the entire stock in a matter of minutes. Take precaution when applying.

If you have access to flow through, you can pump water on them. I will advise you to do two things:
1) Never overfeed them in the evening. Just give them little feed. They tend to be more active in the morning than in the evening.
2) Feed them before 5PM so that the feed can digest on time

You have a good hatchery ma.
Most hatchers have experienced something like this but you shouldnt let it pull u down. Fries mortality has different causes like you ph, feed, poor water mgt, stres, temperatur, etc.
You may give the house some hint about your hatchery mgt from day 1 till when your hatchlings start dying so we can know were you are getting it wrong and correct you or get an experience farmer to check you farm out.
More also hatchlings dont need any medication during their early stage, proper mgt matter most

Congrats to you, we go wash am oo lol. It's a good thing you followed every advice and instruction by members of this thread hence the result. Just imagine if you had stocked 10k fishes, by now you would have been driving a range rover sport . What are ur plans for the next batch?.

I feel for your friend regarding his collapsed pond, I have had my own fair share of a collapsed pond. I had about 10k fingerlings I wanted to sell, the buyer concluded he will pick them up the next day, could you believe that night the pond collapsed and even fell the fence close to it, all the fingerlings was gone. When I saw what happened I sat down on the floor ( five minute madnessss) . All my money was washed away. Anytime I remember that incidence I just laugh it off..

Pillars should be mounted at the at both side of the pond to withstand the any form of collapse.

For earthen pond: width x breath x depth /3 multiply by 2

concrete pond: width x breath x depth /3 multiply by 5

Example. 10 feet by 10 feet with a depth of 4 feet how many fish can we stock in a concrete pond
10 x 10 x 4= 400... 400/3= 133.33..... 133.33 x 5 = 666 fishes

Fish tend to have rapid growth between 3 to 6months. You are very much on track. You can keep using 30% fish meal

It is not fixed. There is no way one can determine the exact figure. Fish feed on themselves (cannibalism), mostly when they are small. A fish that die at night can sink before 8am in the morning. A lot of farms do not have time to start counting even if they do, they can't get the exact figure; that is why an additional 50 pieces or 100 pieces are put on every 1000 pieces so that it can cover for the ones that died during the rearing period. Farmers usually try to make sure mortality rate are reduced to minimal level.

Good job, I noticed two pillars on both side of the pond which is very good to avoid collapse.. make sure all the blocks are filled with concrete and well matched down. For drainage channel all pipe at the back of the pond close to the face, do aittle drainage and lookout for where the water can be channeled to.

While plastering make the pond sloppy towards the drainage for easy flow of water while flushing .

* you will need 2 female of 1.5 kg to 2 kg with 1 male of 2kg brood stock
* 5 vats of 500 ltr can take the 25000 fries at 5000 each. With this you will be able to monitor them well
* the nursery is where the challenge may be. Cos with 1000 ltr you will need to keep just 2000 fingerlings. Some keep up to 5000 fingerlings in a 1000 ltr tank. But my advice is 2000. This will make your fish grow faster healthier and stronger. For this you will need about 12 vats of 1000 ltr each.

if you have not constructed your concrate pond i will advice you to get the services of a bricklayer with experience who has constructed a pond before its easier for them to do a good job...use 9 inches blocks

LITTLE EXPO : For best spawning result maintain water between 28 to 30 degree and ph between 7 to 7.5 anything more or less you get low percentage hartch. goodluck
