hoopLA:I'm not into the whole childishness of all this tribal e-war, but I'm curious too. From what I've read, Echiejile is of Anioma stock from Edo. His name sounds pure Igbo to me. It's certainly not Bini, Esan or anything like that in Edo. But if you know his tribe, can you reveal it? |

hoopLA:Once spoke to Echiejile and his brother and they both identify as Igbo. You must first realize that not every Ika person observe that useless Identity crises,some of them know their roots and are very comfortable with their Igbo heritage. It's only in Nigeria that non Eastern igbos with a few external influences are regarded as a seperate group. Ndi ara! Ogenyi is Idoma which is just a stone throw from Enugu. Even some Igbo people around Enugu-Benue border bear Ogenyi. Actually,i've come across Idoma people that bear Full Igbo names to pay homage to the Igbo relatives in their family ancestry. I wish Igbos would be more realistic about this B-issue. Instead of waxing all nostalgic over Biafra and forcing its resurrection, we should accept that things have changed as a result of losing the civil war. It's okay to fall; it's getting back up that matters. Biafra was not a homogeneously Igbo state when it was first created; its first vice president was from Akwa Ibom state, ffs. But the series of unfortunate events that led to the civil war: Nzeogu's questionably executed coup, Ironsi's indecisive manner in dealing with (or not dealing with) the coup plotters, the counter coup, the endless massacre of Igbos in the North and Ojukwu's ensuing call for secession; they clearly show which group out of 'old Biafra' was squarely in the cross-hairs. An alliance might have worked then, because it's easy to make friends when doubts haven't been cleared. But we lost the war, we have to expect that any group that can would sever all ties with Igbos. And suddenly we are left to bear the name 'Biafra' alone. An alliance is formed naturally when all parties stand to gain mutually from the relationship; therefore, you can only negotiate a favorable alliance from a position of strength. At the moment, we are not doing that. We are trying to forcefully annex ourselves to people who clearly do not see the benefit of the union. Frankly, It's becoming embarrassing and painful to watch. We need to put Biafra on the back burner for a while (if it would/should ever see the light of day again), it isn't working. What we should do, as Igbos is find a path to genuine economic relevance (and I am not talking about producing a few billionaires here and there, through trade). You cannot be discounted if you, as a region, contribute significantly to a country's economy. You would have the bargaining power to negotiate a better deal for yourself. Fix the Igbo nation first - regroup. Even without the official restructuring of the economy, our state governors ought to get creative and spearhead an economic revival within the states. Igbos are industrious people as individuals but we have always been found wanting at leadership. Always. If we can fix that we can be much more effective in industry, collectively. 2 Likes |
