I played this guy online probably four or five times and was really baffled how to deal with it. He trades literally every single time. It didn't matter where I went or what the piece was, if he could get pieces off the board, he did it immediately. My choices were effectively accept the trade or concede the better position and retreat my piece.

The trades never stop either. It seemed he would keep trading all the way through the end game. I found myself at the end of a number of these games slightly behind because I never had a chance to develop any tempo or strategy.

It was annoying at first, and I ended up blundering a few pieces out of frustration. Once I got past that, I was just left confused. He was definitely the better player, though I was able to get a couple wins to soften all those losses.

Is there a proper response to this kind of play?

The guy above probably played against me.

You must have a strong endgame though.
