Carlsen playing white in the first game.

There is very little Balogun can do. Generally in chess especially in GM games, playing as white has a minor advantage. Hence you see many players trying to draw as black. I doubt if there will be a draw here. Carlsen's game is just too strong (especially as he is a business minded player - He doesnt care so much about beauty but about results...)
Game 1 may not get up to 50 moves but would be a huge boost for Balogun if he can hold on

It's obvious that Carlsen's game plan was to play positionally...and to let the difference in mental stamina and positional playing strength determine the outcome.
He didn't even try to attack...just made sure Femi spent all his time trying not to blunder in the opening/middlegame.
In the end, Femi would've have blundered under time pressure (one way or another)...still 37 moves isn't all that bad

WHEN WILL FEMI BE TAKING WHITE?
Re: Magnus Carlsen Vs Femi Balogun - Chess Cup Match 2017 by mercy87(f): 4:32pm On Sep 03, 2017
Femi tried but Magnus is a genuis. He may not rule for long. Another gem is somewhere deeply studying his moves and one day he will succumb to a Champion who probably may be Femi.

I am the next champion. Watch out......dusting my books, re-energizing my brain and mindset for the big game.
Remembered when I enrolled for the under 17 chess competition in National Stadium Surulere....what a great moment.

Watch out...

Mehn the beautiful game...femi really tried. I am impressed. He let his guard down in the middle game though. I expect him to be aggressive as white. Queens gambit maybe?

The same Magnus carlsen....wow ...fantastic...we africans are really backward not because we are black, but because we are blind.

For femi to even have a match with him show commitment and belief on femi's path...whether he wins or loses, he is a winner
dare to dream

Chess doesn't have the awareness it should have in Nigeria. People prefer scrabble tagging chess as boring. It's annoying and disapponting.

I love chess but I'm not really good at it, reason being I grew up in an environment where no one plays it.

Guys in the house, is it possible for a grown up to learn it and be really good at it? Can anyone recommend tutorial centres/apps/books one can use to help with the learning...

I'd really appreciate a response. smiley

How did you learn that fast? You played with friends? Online? You read any book?

Sorry for all the questions

Thanks, but would prefer a club or playing with a team of like-minded players with same passion.

Do you know anywhere in PH?

yes you can still be a grandmaster. Age isn't on your side but download apps, play on chess.com and play people in real life.

Men, I feel sorry for Balogun, Carlsen isn't the guy you want to be on the bench with... Even Vishy Anand didn't stand a chance in the second round. This match can be likened to Real Madrid Vs Sunshine star of Akure.
