So a four months industrial training, gives you the competency to analyse patient sample and issue out results that will aid in diagnosis. Its only in a useless country like Nigeria that will happen. My dear you did industrial training in a private lab because that's the only option available to you, does not mean its your statutory right and job description. That's quackery and can only happen in a cesspit called Nigeria.

Thanks... you just spoke well ..I'm sure the Op is in Nigeria, and to every other person that wants to work in the med.lab ,you can now see that you can ..thanks to the quackery"" grin

am studying SLT in the polytechnic, am currently running HND programme, SLT- Microbiology, can I work in a medical lab? because am kinda confused
You can be taking care of reagents storage, etc but you will not be allowed to conduct a test because you are not trained for that.

And my Google isn't responding so you can help me sir cry

Thanks ...

Why would a slt graduate want to work in a hospital lab sef Dem dey share money for that place ...I mean, there are greater opportunities please ...don't limit yourself please ...

And don't misunderstand me

There is no job description for an SLT graduate in the medical diagnostic laboratory. Yes an SLT can work in a medical research laboratory and not to analyse patients sample routinely as such is a professional field and not an experimental field. So therefore SLT has no duty in hospital or diagnostic laboratory.

Internship in where? When did NISLT become an organisation under the federal ministry of health?? You guys can encroach ehhhh. For your information NISLT is under the federal ministry of science and technology.

Only the federal ministry of health sponsor internship programs in hospitals in Nigeria.
if u read it properly I didn't say internship in hospitals its internship for all the various organs or options of slt as list before. Sometimes we need to read btw lines n understand. internship is not done only by medical oriented pipo all professional courses supposed to do it . First whats internship an idea of learning on the job to master ur skills in that profession. Please think before u talk n make use of ur eyes to read properly

grin grin grin probably someday a quack will analyse your sample or that of your relatives and issue out false positive or false negative result that will lead to death then you will realise we are in Nigeria. After all many avoidable deaths occur daily in hospital and the patient relatives will accept it as the will of God and no litigation will take place.
There was a country.

oga leave this people! the real problem here is lack of proper orientation and career guidance. SLT/HND has its own purpose while Bmls has its own.

ure very correct Nigeria biggest problem is to appreciate division of labour as laboratory in hospitals is concerned slt can only prepare the reagents if need be while the mls wud do the analysis because they well grounded than slt personnel. it jx like the bad practice of doctors prescribing drugs at hospitals instead of pharmacist doing it.

SLT N MLS RE DIFFERENT
slt deal on both physical n life sciences while mls deal on medical sciences as it concerns analysis. mls shud nt ve issues with slt instead with anatomy n physiology coz thier analysis is quite similar though I stand to be corrected

ANICELEST:
A medical laboratory scientist works in a diagnostic laboratory especially in hospitals. While a Science Laboratory a Technologist depending on your area of specialization like Physiology/pharmacology, microbiology/ virology, physics/ engineering production, chemistry/ biochemistry laboratories etc. So, as a Science Laboratory Technologists with Specialization in Physiology/ Pharmacology, U can be found more competent in Basic Medical Sciences laboratory where u conduct and teach 2nd /3rd/4th years medical students practical. U can work in research laboratories like NIPRID, NAFDAC, PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRIES ETC.

If ur area of specialization is in Microbiology, the same applies to microbiology laboratories in higher institutions and Teaching hospital laboratories etc. so, it's applicable to other areas of specialization.

But if u just obtain ur first professional certificate (ND) in Science Laboratory Technology. U can work as a laboratory assistance in any scjence based laboratory. Moreover, u can apply for a direct entry into any science course of ur choice provided u meet up with their requirements.

Science Laboratory Technology is not all done in the Polytechnic but also Universities eg Uniport, Delsu, Unijos and UNN though UNN has stopped the programmer because they could not meet up the NISLT order yo upgrade yo Bachelor of a Technology (B.Tech) instead of HND In which it has bn awarding previously with Nigerian Institute of Science laboratory Technology. (NISLT).

Good luck

Nice write up, but I do not agree with an SLT that specialised in microbiology to work in a Teaching hospital lab. They are neither trained to handle clinical specimen nor licensed by MLSCN to handle such.
Even in the U.S an ASCP certification is required for such to handle and process pathological specimens.
So you need to look into that aspect again for the sake of the young students reading your post.

SLT can only work in medical laboratory because we are in Nigeria were a lot of people break laws and involve in quackery, let them go and try it in a sane country and liable to jail. Nigerians are morally bankrupt, anything for the money.

Sane country is even far, the way they run when they see HEFEMAA is laughable. Lagos is a regulated state that takes the health of populace seriously.

I do appreciate ur input it well thought of, u just mix it up at a point, am also happy u are aware that SLT runs a multipurpose laboratory, underline d word multipurpose (medical/ clinical) inclusive, also note dt medical is a branch in science, by implications medical laboratory is a branch in science laboratory. However, d medical laboratory are referred to as scientists while d SLT are referred to as chartered scientists/technologists, all we are saying is dt it is not all SLT graduate dt are interested in d medical/ clinical aspect of d profession but any SLT graduate dt is interested should not be discouraged but allow to practice, all profession are upgrading in practice, training, curriculum, etc name it, come to think of it when did mls started internship? When did mls started CPD? When did mls stopped their conversion programs? In every aspect we are all improving, solely we know dt mls only area of practice is d medical or Clinical whereas d SLT graduate can chose to go out in the clinical area that is why SLT practice or run multipurpose laboratory. Thank u and good to know that a lot of federal sensitive documents published allows SLT and mls to work in d same govt. Hospital labs with same entry point from grade level 8 - 15, though mls have a new one and SLT will soon have hers. Point of correction and I also stand to be corrected on this too the registrar of mlscn is not prof. Anthony Emeribe but a Ag Tosan, mls has acting registrar in d person of mr Tosan I do not know if of recent mls now have substantive registrar now. Thanks for d information... This is why we said SLT should study their ACT, when uu were in SLT u refused to study ur ACT now that u are in mls u now study but SLT ACT and mls ACT. Thanks once more good information

The fact dt SLT is run in polytechnic and mls is not has not made SLT any inferior but mls I believe offer equivalent of ND/ HND which I believe are d equivalent of mls technicians / mls assistant, polytechnic run all their program from ND to HND is 5yrs sir, while the universities is 5yrs plus NYSC which is total 6yrs, pls note mlscn decided to make theirs 7yrs with internship because they were in fighting with medical doctors so they decided to upgrade for them to be respected that their certificate also takes this long to be earned like d doctors, all d recent changes in mls sir is as a result of being looked down within d health sector by other health professionals leads to mls fast and proactive growth, mind u SLT have its own policies and we run at our own pace but as chartered scientists we will get there.... Note that the fact that u spend 7yrs to get mlscn license and SLT 6yrs has not made SLT not to be chartered scientists while mls just scientists. Ours is in d quality of our trainings. Thanks

FACULTY/SCHOOL Medical Laboratory Science is a Medical Science course studied in university or College of Health Sciences only. In the university, it is studied in the College of Medicine under the Faculty of Health Sciences. Medical Laboratory Assistant and Technicians are trained in the College of Health technology while Medical Laboratory Scientist are trained in the universities.
NOTE: None of the Medical Laboratory Science professionals are trained in the Polytechnics as many Polytechnic graduates and students of Science Laboratory
Technology claim to belong to the Medical Laboratory Science Profession as one can only mistake them to be the same if one does not belong to medical/
health profession or has not been admitted to study any of the course. Whereas, Science Laboratory Technology is studied in the faculty of Biological or Natural Science in the universities and under the school of science in the polytechnics, graduates of Science Laboratory Technology from the polytechnic are called Technician while their counter part from the universities are called Laboratory Technologist.(NOTE No medical here)

The institute is to ensure through its registered members effective and efficient management and administration of institutional and industrial laboratory in Nigeria. The institute is also required to conduct research in all areas of science and technology. The vision is to cause rapid technological development of the nation through science laboratory technology and also to sustain science and technology delivery through efficient, productive and ethical science laboratory practice in institutional, research and private laboratories
throughout the country. The institute have a Multi Purpose Science Laboratory (MSL) at its secretariat in Ibadan, Oyo state that is equipped to provide an

a. Medical Microbiology and Parasitology
B.Virology and Mycology
C.Public Health and Epidemiology
D.Histopathology and Cytopathology
E.Chemical pathology or Clinical chemistry
F.Haematology and Blood group
G.Serology

1. Applied Biology and Microbiology
2. Applied Chemistry and Biochemistry
3. Physics and Electronics
JOB DESCRIPTION/OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates of Medical Laboratory Science can take up job in teaching and specialist hospital, Primary health centres, research and private health centres,
private establishments and quality control or reference laboratories, public health laboratories, forensic and law enforcement laboratories. Their graduates
can be self employed by establishing their own diagnostic/research laboratories. While graduates of Science Laboratory Technology can work in environmental health institution where they may involve in food analysis to protect public health or water industry where they can be involved in water analysis. They can work in secondary school and tertiary institution as science teachers or help in biology or chemistry laboratories as technologist. They can also establish research laboratories for food and water analysis for public health protection. Having pinpointed the major different between the two. This will help students and parents or guardian in making career. Meanwhile, this is very important area in this book because if the universal health coverage or vision 202020 should be attained, the health sector and Science and Technology should be diversified and division of labour should be properly encouraged. This means that it will be barbaric and misplacement of professional priority for some employer of labour especially in the Ministry of Health to advertise for Medical Laboratory job and put qualification as a laboratory technologist or the issue of posting of Corps members who read Microbiology, Science Laboratory Technology and Biochemistry for service (NYSC) or industrial training in the clinical laboratory or the self acclamation of graduates of the three discipline mentioned above as Medical laboratory Scientist is not only seen as professional impersonation but sabotage.

I am a graduate of both.Studied SLT ( microbiology) and MLS ( histopathology and cytology)The major difference is the curriculum, in SLT,we carryout studies on insects, plant anatomy and physiology and to some extent soil characteristics.while in MLS, its human anatomy and physiology majorly. The other techniques are very similar, I can tell you, over 95% of the techniques are the same, just a little adjustment. But let me say this, all techniques have guiding principles which are the same for both studies.
SLT graduates are trained for INDUSTRIAL LABORATORIES, ENVIRONMENTAL LABORATORIES AND SOME TEACHING AND RESEARCH LABORATORIES as the case maybe.
MLS graduates are trained for CLINICAL/MEDICAL LABORATORIES, RESEARCH LABORATORIES AND TEACHING LABORATORIES.
SLT graduates who is still interested in MLS can still do so by going through ACCREDITED UNIVERSITIES
STL graduates can NEVER be EQUATED with MLS.Reasons (SLT graduates do not know the guiding principles of running those tests, they may not know when the test is correct or not( FALSE POSITIVE/ FALSE NEGATIVE RESULT)
STL graduates practicing MLS are QUACKS.They are killing innocent people by giving out wrong diagnosis which is what the doctors use to treat patience.
However, the authorities of our institution should include these in their curriculum so that our SLT graduates will know where to seek for employment. GOD BLESS US ALL.

Have been following this thread for a while now and it seems people don't understand that there's a big difference training curriculum of SLT and MLS.
1. A Med. Lab. Scientist would have gone though necessarily Human Anatomy as well as Physiology (200l) in which SLT wouldn't go through (chemistry, Environmental Biology, Physics, Biochemistry or industrial chemistry). Even BSc Biochemistry or Micro don't offer those courses.
2. A Med. Lab. Scienctist would have started handling Human samples of all the MLS disciplines at 300l (Histology, Med. Micro, Chemical Pathology and Haematology) which is aided by medical laboratory posting in a teaching hospital . Be mindful that this disciplines include advance Physiology, Anatomy, Microbiology, biochemistry, cell biology and at some extent molecular biology. SLT doesn't do this.
3. After 300l and 400l, the students are mandates to write a professional examination in all these deciplines will be monitored my Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (if you fail you repeat) . SLT doesn't do this neither do any basic medical science
4. At 500l there will there will be specialisation and training at the teaching hospital and other lectures at school
5. After graduation, theres a compulsory 1year internship which is another year of training in fact if you don't do well in ur internship you will be asked to repeat WITHOUT PAY. ONLY MLS AND MBBS does this (Nursing are just starting). SLT doesn't do this..

A student who did this successfully becomes a licensed Med lab scientist..

Hence it is wrong for someone who didn't undergo trainings like this to handle HUMAN SAMPLE which will be used for TREATMENT.
a simple mistake, a single unprofessionalism WILL be fatal

mustykay:

So am I, SLT then Med lab Science Chem Path

there ve always been competent hands doing the jobs jx that every profession has it off side.the amount of practicals done in university is compared non I can only speak for uniben were I graduated from I had a whole semester of practical experience every session daily from 8am-2pm after then we take courses along side this ws done 200-400lvl. if u know your onion one should be competent.

You know why I said so many SLT jobs are taken by non SLT professionals because SLT professionals are chasing shadows in MLS. These days you see as Microbiologist as a laboratory technologist even biochemistry now function as a biochemistry lab technologist (this is what is reigning self) and most SLT don't even renew their licence so one can't access their competencies in our school and industrial labs any longer

I agree with u in what u ve said bt please be corrected that slt does what we call laboratory posting too from 200-400 and also they commence internship with the 2017/18 session. tnks
