Just like I have opined SLT can run a multipurpose or "overpurpose" laboratory no dispute about that but when human lives are involved it becomes a criminal offence and as such termed "QUACKERY". The major reason for the creation of SLT was to tackle the industrial, Scientific and Research sectors using modern technology as SLT no matter which way you want to brandish it is purely science and technology driven (the basic reason it's in the ministry of science and technology)

also note dt medical is a branch in science, by implications medical laboratory is a branch in science laboratory

If this your analogy is anything to go by it simply means dental, Physiotherapy, optical and radiological laboratories are also a branch of science laboratory right? After all they are all still "Medical".

It's only in Nigeria this your 1920 analogy makes sense. You think MLS is a Nigerian thing. Medical/Clinical laboratory is different from any other scientific laboratory as far as human lives and not plants are involved worldwide it's the duty of a MLS to cater for that.

Whatever chartered scientist is I really don't care as there are chartered biochemists with title alone. It's medical laboratory scientist and not just scientist alone.

come to think of it when did mls started internship? When did mls started CPD? When did mls stopped their conversion programs?

MLS started internship as way back as 2003 only few years after NUC started the running of the program even though it is prescribed in the curriculum as do other health / medical courses eg Medicine, Pharmacy, Radiography, Physiotherapy and of course MLS.

CPD programme started in 2009 as a way of keeping abreast with recent advances in the profession. CPD is done by everyone in the health sector to keep everyone with recent happenings that has evolved.

The conversion program stopped in 2010 as MLS were producing graduates of competence to bear the title they possess with pride.

In every aspect we are all improving, solely we know dt mls only area of practice is d medical or Clinical whereas d SLT graduate can chose to go out in clinical area that is why SLT practice or run multipurpose laboratory.

MLS isn't solely clinical or Medical as one can still practice in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals or don't you know MLS work in NAFDAC, SON and NDLEA? The reason why SLT run multipurpose is simply because it's industrial and research oriented so it's understandable.
BTW do you even know the meaning of the word clinical or the adjective "medical". Relate the meaning to what you studied in SLT and do the comparison and see if what you claim isn't a professional fraud.

Thank u and good to know that a lot of federal sensitive documents published allows SLT and mls to work in d same govt. Hospital labs with same entry point from grade level 8 - 15, though mls have a new one and SLT will soon have hers.

Government hospital labs don't employ SLT to a medical laboratory most are employed as scientific officers not as a MLS. If you doubt I'd give you job adverts where it's clearly stated. It might happen in some states where nepotism is the order of the day but in a state that takes the lives of the populace seriously that can NEVER happen.
MLS starts from GL10 and ends at 17 as do others in the health sector and we run on a CONHESS scale not CONTISS or HATISS as do SLT but because of long throat some of your members want to be taking CONHESS scale when what was captured was for MLS and not SLT.

Point of correction and I also stand to be corrected on this too the registrar of mlscn is not prof. Anthony Emeribe but a Ag Tosan, mls has acting registrar in d person of mr Tosan I do not know if of recent mls now have substantive registrar now. Thanks for d information...

What has the acting registrar got to do with this post FYI this Ag registrar is even outperforming what Emeribe had done transitioning from BMLS to MLSD (Doctor of MLS) as it is done in other parts of the world where MLS is practiced eg. In the USA, they offer the degree of Doctor of Clinical laboratory science (DCLS), Pakistan and Ghana offers Doctor of MLS (MLSD) so soon that would suffice in Nigeria thanks to Ag Reg. Tosan

I was NEVER in SLT and I've never been in one. As a learned mind, when I saw a conflict by assumption from SLT claiming they are given right (who knows where) to practice MLS I was forced to study both acts and came to a conclusion that they were not tied to each other as the SLT act kept repeating Secondary school, tertiary institutions and scientific research centres without any mention of lives and testing on human subjects.

d fact dt SLT is run in polytechnic and mls is not has not made SLT any inferior but mls I believe offer equivalent of ND/ HND which I believe are d equivalent of mls technicians / mls assistant, polytechnic run all their program from ND to HND is 5yrs sir, while the universities is 5yrs plus NYSC which is total 6yrs, pls note mlscn decided to make theirs 7yrs with internship because they were in fighting with medical doctors so they decided to upgrade for them to be respected that their certificate also takes this long to be earned like d doctors, all d recent changes in mls sir is as a result of being looked down within d health sector by other health professionals leads to mls fast and proactive growth, mind u SLT have its own policies and we run at our own pace but as chartered scientists we will get there.... Note that the fact that u spend 7yrs to get mlscn license and SLT 6yrs has not made SLT not to be chartered scientists while mls just scientists. Ours is in d quality of our trainings. Thanks

Don't misquote me I never said any course is inferior as there's no such course that is inferior. Before you practice as a MLS it takes 8 good years before you can stand on your own as a registered and certified MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST not 7 years.
In schools where SLT is run as a Bsc programme it's 4 years (BSc SLT)only university of technology runs it for 5 years (BTech SLT). It's like saying because one studies Microbiology or Biochemistry from university of technology which runs it 5 years instead of 4 makes it any different from those who studied it for 4 years.

That MLS is what it is today is not as a result of fighting with doctors it is what is contained in their curriculum and practice that is just being denied them not like one imported policy from one Dick, Tom and Harry.

P.S:I have seen the curriculum of SLT and even a blind man can attest what they claim they want to practice is far out of the picture of what they were trained for. MLS practice what's inscribed in her act as that is our guide.

Quite true but at least once in a while renew you might have a better offer that might require it some day and going by what the ministry of science and technology are saying there are better days ahead

I believe very soon you guys will get it right and things work well in Nigeria for your kind. Rome wasn't built in a day so there's always room for improvement. SLTs should take over their institute and chase those money eaters out (Non SLTs). Even soil and oil palm research labs have been hijacked by non SLTs leaving many graduates unemployed.

There's no such thing as sheer wickedness and Nigerian factor bruh there's no medically oriented SLT (it's something (illusion) they created). MLS isn't biting more than they can chew, they are only practicing based on the existing law regulating the different professions. If by law there's anything as such as medically oriented SLT, it should be in the Act establishing SLT and the practice of such "medically oriented SLT" becomes legal.
BTW no MLS will equate him/herself to a medical doctor as both exist independently and are only complementary to each other for the purpose of our patients.

SLT graduates are not equal to MLS graduates.SLT trains in the school of applied science where soil,insects, plant anatomy and physiology are the core of the study
MLS graduates trains in the college/school of health sciences where human anatomy and physiology are the key subject.
SLT graduates practicing MLS are QUACKS. They are responsible for the death of millions of lives in Nigeria because of wrong diagnosis which doctors use to treat patience.

Which hospitals did you receive hands on clinical experience and clinical rotations during training. So you ain't aware of compulsory hospital posting during training. You think analysing patient sample is an experiment. Who assessed your competence Which hospital did you train for one year internship which equates to one year experience. You can't just fall from no where and start analysing patient sample just because you did 6 months Industrial training in a private medical laboratory , its a blunder to start practicing what you just learnt in 6 months. Try that in a sane country and be liable to jail.

Just asking for clarifications, I have some SLT graduates who have always brought up these issues and I couldn't inpute. d thread has given me insight.

You could apply for Direct Entry to Rivers State University to study Medical Laboratory Science, if you have an upper credit in your OND

MLS are not wrong if they are equating themselves to medical doctors. Do u know why they are referred to as ORACLE OF MODERN MEDICINE?? If u know what that means.... If not so, why will doctors have to send people to the lab for series of tests after he might have carried out the physical examination. A doctor cannot categorically tell what disease his patient is battling unless he had undergone series of diagnosis. Mls makes use of blood, stool samples, urine,hvs, sputum to mention a few. Have u heard about MCS?? (Microscopy, culture and sensitivity) where a medical lab scientist carries out series of test and will be the one to prescribe the drug to be used for the doctor.. In a nut shell, a doctor can be likened to an IFA Priest, while MLS to the oracle itself.
To those of u saying Mls is a branch in SLT, ur state of ignorance is pitiable. U mean those courses u offered in polytechnic/ Uni automatically qualifies you to run a multipurpose laboratory..? Sense fall on u. I can categorically tell u that u have little or know know about medical laboratory science.

Any doctor who needed the lab to make diagnosis or to treat should be sanctioned or have defective education. These services complement the doctor. Patients don't go to hospital and say, "I want to see my lab scientist or radiographer or pharmacist", they always go to the hospital because they want to see a doctor. A well trained doctor should be able to arrive at a diagnosis, and use laboratory/radiologic tests to confirm that diagnosis. When a doctor sees for example pneumonia or genital discharge, he shouldn't wait for MCS to begin antibiotics, he ask for MCS to confirm that d antibiotics d patient is on is sensitive, in fact if the patient is recovering on the prescriptions the doctor doesn't change the medications even if the sensitivity says otherwise. Any doctor who cannot treat common medical ailments effectively when there is no laboratory should be shown the way out.

yea and that is why antibiotics resistance is on the rise, you don't just prescribe an antibiotics except for emergency situation without an MCS result, why then do you need the MCS when you can just fire the patient with heavy dose of antibiotics? nice decision, most schools hardly take MLT for DE because admission is given by the University and JAMB and not the department, any MLT who really wants to advance career wise should be planning on going for BMLS. Same way most RN are now coming back for BNSC

Big lie my brother. Every doctor knows the spectrum of drugs to use for UTI, or pneumonia or cellulitis. Only a quack will have his patient return back in 72hrs to be treated for an infectious dxs, maybe d patient would be dead or complicated by then. There are even drugs that though are microbiologically correct, are medically incorrect, eg you see a pregnant woman with pyelonephritis sensitive to Erythromycin +++, and Ofloxacin ++ . It will be stupid using erythromycin, because while it is microbiologically correct, medically it is wrong. I rest my case because I am not a lab scientist and can't argue anotherans field.

Oga, get ur facts right. Does the fact that patients dont have direct contact with mls makes it less important? In a sane environment, a doctor cannot just start administering treatment for malaria or typhoid after a patient has complained of incessant headache and body pains because they both share similar symptoms. Our people here love cutting corners and not follow due processes. They administer treatment without diagnosis not because they are sure but based on experience. Because u call them doctors doesn't mean they are all knowing. I need u to understand that these people(MLS) are the secret behind their success while doctors take the glory because they directly attend to patients which makes u think they know everything. A doctor cannot determine a sickle cell by mere physical examination. FYI doctors are dependent on laboratory result for treatments in serious cases. No one is superior to other, they both have different role to play.

The central person in the hospital isn't even the doctor lol but the patient itself. Modern day health care operates a patient centred system with all professionals (doctors, nurses, lab scts, pharmacists et al)contributing to her welfare. The patient doesn't come to the hospital to see anybody but to get well. Once the doctor does his job he sends them to either lab or pharmacy for their contribution (should need be) to complete the cycle. Check image below to understand better.

Not totally true....You just made me remember a case whereby a doctor requested a test to be carried out on a patient and the clinical summary as presented on the Request form/ the parasitic organism suspected by him was "Shistosoma Hematobium" and the sample that was sent to the lab was a Stool sample(which was even wrong in the first place, if he knew what he was doing it's a Urine sample that ought to have been sent). But after carrying out the test the parasite that was found to be present in the patient's stool sample was "Entamoeba Histolytica"....If the test had not been carried out, the patient would have been misdiagnosed and given the wrong treatment and this could have led to the death of that patient.....

If you study this you could, for instance, find out "why" bread decay so quickly and how it should be made to last for 1 month without decay, or "why" petrol runs out quickly in an engine and how it could be produced so it could last longer in an engine. So, you can see, that's why someone said most of the jobs here would be in quality control areas or even designing new products.

Medical lab scientists are by-product of the above working on medicals- drugs and health products. They research on things that may be consumed by humans or even animals; including drugs, foods, toothpaste, cremes, e.t.c. They may discover a toothpaste that could both be eaten my children as well as used for brushing teeth. I noticed children are always eating that thing. In short, Medical lab science is a specialization of just one of the many works a science lab technician could do.
