I have read ur post again and again and I don't believe d first half because I am educated and know what should be. Any doctor who needed the lab to make diagnosis or to treat should be sanctioned or have defective education. These services complement the doctor. In fact MLS, radiology and pharmacy where made to aid the doctors work, the central person in d hospital is a doctor. Patients don't go to hospital and say, "I want to see my lab scientist or radiographer or pharmacist", they always go to the hospital because they want to see a doctor. A well trained doctor should be able to arrive at a diagnosis, and use laboratory/radiologic tests to confirm that diagnosis. When a doctor sees for example pneumonia or genital discharge, he shouldn't wait for MCS to begin antibiotics, he ask for MCS to confirm that d antibiotics d patient is on is sensitive, in fact if the patient is recovering on the prescriptions the doctor doesn't change the medications even if the sensitivity says otherwise. Any doctor who cannot treat common medical ailments effectively when there is no laboratory should be shown the way out.

A doctor is only guessing without confirmation/adequate from lab, radiologist e.t.c.
There are many disease with almost the same symptoms but the method of treatment is significantly diff.
A physical examination gives information but is not adequate but will give directions..

nice decision, most schools hardly take MLT for DE because admission is given by the University and JAMB and not the department, any MLT who really wants to advance career wise should be planning on going for BMLS. Same way most RN are now coming back for BNSC

If you have the money I will link you to a private school that will. Admit you through DE but you have to obtain jamb DE form..

MLT as DE is recognized my the MLSCN and more acceptable than OND SLT

Big lie my brother. Every doctor knows the spectrum of drugs to use for UTI, or pneumonia or cellulitis. Only a quack will have his patient return back in 72hrs to be treated for an infectious dxs, maybe d patient would be dead or complicated by then. There are even drugs that though are microbiologically correct, are medically incorrect, eg you see a pregnant woman with pyelonephritis sensitive to Erythromycin +++, and Ofloxacin ++ . It will be stupid using erythromycin, because while it is microbiologically correct, medically it is wrong. I rest my case because I am not a lab scientist and can't argue anotherans field.

Well, we didn't have personal contact with the patient to know she's pregnant. All we have is a blood sample, should we do pregnancy test along with sensitivity.. That's ur woke..

For example I say suggested a drug that may lyse RBC as a med micro, an haematologist reported low PCV for the same patient. It's left for you to choose an effective drug that won't decrease PCV and u may even want to investigate the cos of the low PCV and see if it has any relationship with the patient's infection.. .

Not totally true....You just made me remember a case whereby a doctor requested a test to be carried out on a patient and the clinical summary as presented on the Request form/ the parasitic organism suspected by him was "Shistosoma Hematobium" and the sample that was sent to the lab was a Stool sample(which was even wrong in the first place, if he knew what he was doing it's a Urine sample that ought to have been sent). But after carrying out the test the parasite that was found to be present in the patient's stool sample was "Entamoeba Histolytica"....If the test had not been carried out, the patient would have been misdiagnosed and given the wrong treatment and this could have led to the death of that patient.....

I don't know how a doctor will just do physical examination and say u have HIV and start treatment. Even is he guessed right what about the possible coinfections?

There has been cases where a doctor would query a particular parasite but after test the scientist will see up to 2 more..

This shows how significant the lab is to the patient's recovery and also the doctor

The central person in the hospital isn't even the doctor lol but the patient itself. Modern day health care operates a patient centred system with all professionals (doctors, nurses, lab scts, pharmacists et al)contributing to her welfare. The patient doesn't come to the hospital to see anybody but to get well. Once the doctor does his job he sends them to either lab or pharmacy for their contribution (should need be) to complete the cycle. Check image below to understand better.

Sorry to say if you call patient centred health care jargon then you are in a primitive village in Nigeria even some hospital follows this approach. No patients come to the hospital to see anybody, they come to get well from that which is disturbing them. Health care is an interplay of professionals contributing towards the well being of her clients. Once you exhaust your scope you pass to another person (consultation, providing adequate diagnosis to healing via therapy and nursing them back to well being) - It's a cycle that must be completed (not in every case though). All must complement each other for a common purpose - The Patient.

Patient centred approach is modeled by the World Health Organisation aimed at providing effective healthcare. You can take out time and read about it not what you watch. Health care isn't practiced only in Nigeria

Radiologists didn't fall from the sky. The MRIs, X-rays and all the other equipment they use are products of laboratory scientists who've long researched the metals, plastics, glasses, e.t.c to make manufacturing of the radiologist's equipment possible, to begin with.

Same way a radiologist is a specialization of medical science, so does laboratory science have its specialization.

Laboratory science is area you carry out any scientific research. Almost nothing is off-limit to a laboratory scientist. An astrophysicist researching the chemical components of a piece of rock from the moon is still doing laboratory science.

Medical laboratory science is just what the name imply, nothing more. However, a medical laboratory scientist can look into the same moon rock to see whether it could be used to make drugs to cure HIV AIDS or maybe use it as maggi to cook soup.

Just specialization.

Well, you can try your luck, but me: I did that MLT in a college of health. But when I needed to advance to a B.MLS, I wrote JAMB & got admission into Level 1. It doesn't take anything. Before you know, you have graduated. I am done with the degree now.

Ask yourself this question: 5 years after my MLT, where will I be? If you don't make all efforts to have a B.MLS, you will still be a MLT

unfortunately the modern day "jargons" is being championed by WHO with Doctors at the head of almost all their agencies and units. So it is not a Nigerian thing.
I was reading a medical students blog who was sharing his foreign university exchange in US and he wrote on how the Multidisciplinary team(doctors, nurses, pharmacist, MED lab scientist, social workers) review each patients case together in a group discussion and each Person talks about the challenges, possible solution and other areas that will be of benefit to the patient but in Nigeria most doctors especially the "big consultants" wont even allow other healthcare personnel access to patients details let alone discussing the way forward with non "doctors"

Also, Just few months back, university of Benin basic medical sciences faculty had a lecture series which was delivered by a physiotherapist who is THE HEAD OF NEUROSURGERY! ! In United States with all neurosurgeons under him (a non doctor head of neurosurgery, can't happen in naija, never) most of the consultants from UBTH were there, even the Dean of medicine, some got angry and left after he washed them on how they hinder growth of Nigerian healthcare by claiming it is their right to occupy all top positions even when they know it is not so. Many of them are well traveled and see how things are done in saner climes but once they come back home, they feel everyone should worship them.... Healthcare is now patient centred and doesn't revolve around the doctor anymore

SLT is more of physics, chemistry and biology,
while MLS is more of Clinical oriented.

To all aspiring individuals that wants to work in the hospital, that syllabus should make you see the light.

The course outline said it all. The problems with some people that didn't studied SLT or that studied it, thinks their right position to work is hospital (Medical /Clinical analyses). Throughout my undergraduate as a Science Lab. Tech. (Biochemistry /Chemistry) I wasn't taught in theory /practical relating to human sample (blood, urine, saliva, faces etc). Some hospitals (especially private) are employing SLT to work in their lab. But u can't dare it in FCT because you didn't have their licence (MLSCN)

Went through the curriculum and it's as clear as day. I never had this fact earlier. At least I now have a reply to any SLT graduate grumbling to me.

To the students the two courses are good but it is better to learn now and make your choice earlier to avoid the mistake I and many other students have made because it is said that you learn from the mistake of others for you may not live long to do all the mistakes yourself. Now let’s digest the differences.
FACULTY/SCHOOL Medical Laboratory Science is a Medical Science course studied in university or College of Health Sciences only. In the university, it is studied in the College of Medicine under the Faculty of Health Sciences. Medical Laboratory Assistant and Technicians are trained in the College of Health technology while Medical Laboratory Scientist are trained in the universities.
NOTE: None of the Medical Laboratory Science professionals are trained in the Polytechnics as many Polytechnic graduates and students of Science Laboratory
Technology claim to belong to the Medical Laboratory Science Profession as one can only mistake them to be the same if one does not belong to medical/
health profession or has not been admitted to study any of the course. Whereas, Science Laboratory Technology is studied in the faculty of Biological or Natural Science in the universities and under the school of science in the polytechnics, graduates of Science Laboratory Technology from the polytechnic are called Technician while their counter part from the universities are called Laboratory Technologist.(NOTE No medical here)
COURSES OFFERED AND DURATION
The courses offered by medical laboratory science students include Medical Biochemistry, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Haematology, Pharmacology,forensic analysis, Embalment techniques, Clinical pathology, Biostatistics, virology, Medical Microbiology and Parasitology public Health and Epidemiology etc. The
duration of study for medical laboratory Assistant and Technicians are 2 and 3years respectively, hence the duration of study for medical laboratory scientist is 5 years in the university leading to the award of Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) degree plus 1 year internship programme and 1 year NYSC making a total of seven years (7) training.
While the course offered by students of Science Laboratory Technology are pure and applied Chemistry, Microbiology, Physics, Electronics, Photography, Plants
and animal taxonomy etc. The duration of study in the polytechnic is 2 years National Diploma and 2 years leading to the award of Higher National Diploma
(HND), while those in the university is 4 years leading to the award of B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) degree plus 1 year National Service (NYSC) making a
total of 5 years training.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The entry requirement for candidates seeking to study medical Laboratory Science in the universities are good cut off mark from Unified Tertiary matriculation examination and Post-UTME plus 5 credits pass in WAEC, SSCE or NECO,GCE ordinary level obtained at not more than 2 sittings from English
language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Also holders of HND/ BSc in relevant courses are offered admission through direct entry to 200 level.
Whereas, the admission requirement for students of science Laboratory Technology are credit pass from English language and Mathematics and three other credit pass from other science subject from either Physics, Biology, Agric/ Health Sciences, Chemistry, Technical drawing, Metal or Wood work, Basic electricity, Further Mathematics and fine Art obtained in not more than 2 sittings from WAEC, SSCE, NECO, GCE O level in addition to getting the required mark from Unified Tertiary matriculation examination and Post-UTME. Also candidates with OND/HND in relevant discipline are given direct entry admission to the universities.
COUNCIL/REGULATORY BODY
The council that regulate medical Laboratory practice in Nigeria is called Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) is a Federal government statutory regulatory agency established by the ACT 11 of 2003 as a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Health.It broadly charged the council with
the responsibilities of regulating Medical Laboratory Services, through registration and licensing of Medical laboratories as well as practitioners, mandatory inspection, monitoring for quality improvement, accreditation monitoring and evaluation as well as certification of laboratory test kits and reagents. The Act further empowers the council to regulate the training of Medical Laboratory Scientists, Technicians and Assistants as well as
registration, regulation, Licensing and Accreditation of Medical Laboratories in public and private health institution. It has the national secretariat in Abuja and the Registrar/Chief Executive is Professor Anthony Emeribe.
While the council that regulates Science Laboratory Technology practice in Nigeria is known as The Nigeria Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) was established by Act 12 of 2003 of the National Assembly and made a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology.The core mandate of the Institute is to “Advance Science Laboratory Technology profession”. The institute is to ensure through its registered members effective and efficient management and administration of institutional and industrial laboratory in Nigeria. The institute is also required to conduct research in all areas of science and technology. The vision is to cause rapid technological development of the nation through science laboratory technology and also to sustain science and technology delivery through efficient, productive and ethical science laboratory practice in institutional, research and private laboratories
throughout the country. The institute have a Multi Purpose Science Laboratory (MSL) at its secretariat in Ibadan, Oyo state that is equipped to provide an
efficient laboratory services for the general public, Scientist, researchers, industries, farmers, exporters and student and hence assisting in science
practical instructions and training of both secondary and tertiary institution and serve as a centre for training and retraining of technologists in some special area of science and technology.
SPECIALIZATION
Medical Laboratory Science has both undergraduate and graduate specialty in the following disciplines

JOB DESCRIPTION/OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates of Medical Laboratory Science can take up job in teaching and specialist hospital, Primary health centres, research and private health centres,
private establishments and quality control or reference laboratories, public health laboratories, forensic and law enforcement laboratories. Their graduates
can be self employed by establishing their own diagnostic/research laboratories. While graduates of Science Laboratory Technology can work in environmental health institution where they may involve in food analysis to protect public health or water industry where they can be involved in water analysis. They can work in secondary school and tertiary institution as science teachers or help in biology or chemistry laboratories as technologist. They can also establish research laboratories for food and water analysis for public health protection. Having pinpointed the major different between the two. This will help students and parents or guardian in making career. Meanwhile, this is very important area in this book because if the universal health coverage or vision 202020 should be attained, the health sector and Science and Technology should be diversified and division of labour should be properly encouraged. This means that it will be barbaric and misplacement of professional priority for some employer of labour especially in the Ministry of Health to advertise for Medical Laboratory job and put qualification as a laboratory technologist or the issue of posting of Corps members who read Microbiology, Science Laboratory Technology and Biochemistry for service (NYSC) or industrial training in the clinical laboratory or the self acclamation of graduates of the three discipline mentioned above as Medical laboratory Scientist is not only seen as professional impersonation but sabotage.

I have read all the comments again and all i do is laugh medical is a branch of science and only limiter to a small place of the profession.

As SLT professional you explore a wide range of specialties.
For those thinking slt os a single profession i guess many are speaking out of hate.
we have all areas of science in slt such as
*biomedical in medical/clinical
*physiology/pharmacology in musicals/clinicals
*microbiology having a sub branch of medical micro
bch also having a sub branch as medical bch
*physics wh also have the clinicals such as in radiology etc

the scope of slt in nigeria covers also the medical aspect as well as others.

we have all areas of science in slt such as
*biomedical in medical/clinical
*physiology/pharmacology in musicals/clinicals
*microbiology having a sub branch of medical micro
bch also having a sub branch as medical bch
*physics wh also have the clinicals such as in radiology etc

the scope of slt in nigeria covers also the medical aspect as well as others.

did you even read the previous posts before typing? Even the curriculum of both have been presented side by side. Don't deceive Ignorant ones, biological research is different from routine diagnosis for treatment. Those who have read both SLT and MLS have presented unbiased facts above, you can believe what you want to

Medical is a branch of science no doubt but the medical in this context has nothing to do with your "science". Is medical science same as pure and applied science? There's a huge difference in what a medical science students does than what it is a pure science does. If medical is a branch of science why isn't all the department in pure and applied science (SLT, IC, CS, MCB, BCH etc) not in the college of medical science?

When you want to make sense always write in full
1. Biomedical technology: Is a technologist who's in charge of carrying practicals for students as he/she is groomed in preparation of solutions and chemicals to be used during anatomy practicals, maintaining equipments and not the conducting the practical itself. In other words oversees the lab.
2. Physiology/pharmacology technology: almost same as one. For the purpose of learning.
3. Microbiology technology: same as 1 and 2 to teach/conduct practical for students in the department of Microbiology as they are good in virtually every aspects of Microbiology.
4. Physics and electronics technology: to teach and conduct practical for students in the aforementioned departments so they can learn the crux practical wise.

The aim of SLT is to teach, groom and conduct practical for students who wish to appreciate science in entirety. That you did a semester in medical whatever doesn't give you the right to stick your nose there its just to make you appreciate the usefulness of medicine in science and technology.

Even all these sub-departments you mentioned you share it with the real owners of the department (anatomy, Physiology and pharmacology, Microbiology, biochemistry and physics) and yet they know their limits based on what they studied. The only upper hand you have over them is just the technology attached and the license you possess to practice your technology in their labs else they'd have kicked you out long ago.

Do you know what biological research is actually? In biological research human lives aren't necessary as plants and laboratory animals (rabbits, rats, guinea pigs etc) are used. After biological research if the research proceeds to clinical stage those in the medical line takes over from where you stop (laboratory animals). Clinical trials involves human lives so only those certified to handle human lives continues (doctors, Medical Scientists, pharmacists etc).
The biological research SLT carries out are limited to plants and animals and it ends there. Try it on a human life and your address might just change to Kirikiri maximum prison.
If you don't know what biological research entails then you have missed your way in SLT.

you dont speak because you want to speak. slt have different options. so u dont use one option to compliment qll.

certain options are in the college of medical sciences such as biomedical and physio/pharm.
they did medical courses like all other medical students.

others are in the applied and life sciences as well as environmental and agricultural sciences.

so dont use an option course outline to justify ur claims

No option in SLT are in the college of medical sciences as it's not one. Do you even know the departments under the college of medical sciences? You talk like we no go school. All options are in the school of SLT (SSLT) which is under the faculty of pure science.

That biomedical technology (only done in FUTO and UNIPORT) does anatomy, Physiology and pharmacology technology and techniques doesn't and isn't same courses other medical students do. Practical approach isn't same as a course itself.

My brother if you and cronies don't what SLT entails download the NISLT Act and read through it, it would guide you and direct your practice based on your scope.

Look at this your Act and see what the institute isn't true to you guys on. Be guided check 2 (i) and read all sir.

Even those in Microbiology department do medical courses eg medical Microbiology, pharmaceutical Microbiology and still does practicals but does that make them one NO.
