Huawei beat Apple for the second place in the global smartphone market

It looks like Huawei’s plan to become the largest smartphone maker in the world is on track.

Counterpoint Research published its latest global smartphone market analysis, and the biggest takeaway is Huawei’s impressive performance that put it ahead of Apple for the first time.

According to Counterpoint, Huawei outsold Apple in June, July, and likely in August. The research firm did not share its raw numbers, but looking at the graph below, it looks like Huawei’s and Apple’s share in July were around 12 percent. Huawei edged out the iPhone’s maker, while Samsung continued its streak at the top with just over 20 percent of sales share.

Huawei has previously claimed to have beaten Apple in sales in December 2016, but it’s the first time a large research firm puts Huawei ahead of Apple in a research paper.

To be fair to Apple, Huawei’s lead seems very small for now, and it could be very brief. Apple is gearing up to launch a major revision of the iPhone, one that is likely to result in a substantial sales spike. Furthermore, summer is usually Apple’s lowest point, as many of its customers wait out for a new iPhone in early fall.

Huawei will strike back with the new Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, which the company’s CEO Richard Yu called “more powerful than the iPhone." The new devices will be unveiled on October 16 in Germany.

The trends seem to work in Huawei’s favor, which has made no secret of its ambition to become the top smartphone seller within four to five years. Apple’s share, while highly cyclical, has been stagnant overall over the past years, while Huawei is steadily crawling up.

Counterpoint also released a breakdown of the top ten best-selling smartphones in July 2017 and, surprisingly, Huawei is not represented at all. Apple’s iPhones are the undisputed leaders, followed by Oppo’s sleeper hits R11 and A57, and Samsung’s Galaxy S8.

The makeup of the top ten looks like a great representation of the three-way battle currently going on between Apple, Samsung, and Chinese players, a battle that will continue to shape the industry in the next years.

While Huawei does very well in terms of overall sales (73 million units in H1 2017), the fact that it lacks a truly popular device remains a weakness. The Mate series is still not acting as an engine for Huawei’s lineup, lacking the brand power of the iPhone, Galaxy S line, or even of some Oppo devices.

“While Huawei has trimmed its portfolio, it likely needs to further streamline its product range like Oppo and Xiaomi have done – putting more muscle behind fewer products,” said Pavel Naiya, an analyst with Counterpoint.

Huawei’s other big problem is its over-reliance on certain markets – mainly China, but also Europe and Latin America. The company needs to improve its game in India and especially in the United States, where Huawei devices are still hard to come by. In order to do so, Huawei has reportedly teamed up with AT&T, the second largest US carrier, to put the Mate 10 in the hands of more Americans starting next year.

Now that Huawei is on par with Apple in terms of sales, Samsung becomes the next target. Do you think Huawei has what it takes to become #1 worldwide?

Even better, they have a good market-attack strategy and they are following it up with equally good technology

Many reasons I guess, but I do assure you they have a good market base.

I've been using a Mate 9 for 8 months now and I'm very happy to have left the popular mobile brands (was an iPhone and LG user) - though Huawei is becoming that.

Sony was a beast, they have stagnated as they refused to accept the most important factor in trend/fashion ie., change.

For the past 10+ years, Sony mobile has been on a downward spiral bar a little jolt on the graph. Saved by the gaming and general consumer electronics industry, the mobile department has been posting losses after losses.

The IT world is an ubiquitous one as such, IT firms have to flow with the current trend but Sony has refused to do that.

Generally, their design is still similar to the one in early 2010s - the first picture below is a February 2013 Experia Z while the second is the just released September 2017 latest flagship XZ1, you'll notice they look like twins. They have refused to wholly embrace curved screens or large ones (for perspective, the XZ1 has 5.2 inches while the XZ1 compact has 4.6 inches), still sporting full HD screen quality. Even though their phones aren't too big, they still use BIG bezels, smaller battery capacities - below 3,000mah, their market strategy is also bad, for example, they are not partnering any carrier. But to me, two of their biggest crimes are; 1. having a very awful skin on the Android OS(though they promised to go as close as possible to clean Android with the XZ1) and 2. not putting fingerprint scanners on all their flagships variants only Japanese variants. On the upside, they have amazing camera.

That's market-share wise not technology wise wink cheesy

They are now taking over Europe and USA by storm. The recently partnered wit AT&T (US second largest carrier for the upcoming Mate 10).

Next in line, they say is India and Africa.

What the difference between iPhone 6, 6s and 7 from design perspective?

Sony incorporates fps on thier phone besides the versions sold in the US simply cause of patent issues with Verizon( i think).

Next time, don't mislead the audience.

Mislead which audience?

I'm about right here with you. You walk up to my post and spit absolute bollocks. What is the difference between iPhone 5 and iPhone 7,? that's the question you should ask cos I'm comparing a phone of 2013 to 2017 (4 years apart) not that of 2015 to 2016 (a year apart).

BTW, if you aren't sure of the reason(s) why sony doesn't have fingerprint scanner on some of its phones don't comment on it until you stop thinking and start knowing. Abi is Verizon the only carrier in the States?

That's how you and a friend came to write epistles on my comment regarding Huawei Mate 9 cos I said it was revolutionary. I decided to ignore you guys cos all I saw were keyboard warriors that traverse the net looking for information to back their arguments.

Look up in my comments above on this thread you'll see what I'm doing at the moment which is in the mobile computing field, I find it unsavory for someone publishing articles on IEEE & Elsevier related to mobile computing, processing algorithms and machine learning in Mobile devices to stoop so low arguing with a person who believes he knows all cos he likes technology and is always in science & technology section on nairaland that's why I ignored you cos if you cannot understand that a mobile company implementing machine learning into its SoC to prevent the Achilles heel that is; phones slowing down gradually after months of use requiring a factory reset to be as fast as when new is a revolutionary step then I have nothing to say to you. And before you search for; first SoCs with ML (I know you guys like Google a lot) yes Qualcomm SD820 came with that but only to detect malware early and also to give software companies a comprehensive and real-time insight on improvements needed to enhance their apps NOT to improve the efficiency of task execution and memory management by the SoC (which is what Huawei did with the Kirin 960), my mate 9 is 8+ months old with 215 installed apps but still as snappy as the first day I got it out of the box. By the way, hope you have seen that the Kirin 970 is the first SoC with AI? I guess that also isn't revolutionary right? KMT.

Whenever you need an insightful read to understand the nitty gritty of it you let me know I'll refer you to some of my scholarly works.

On a final note, like I said in the other tread, I'm always open to discussion, to rubbing minds. I don't like to just go on and argue aimlessly. Hopefully, if you still want to share a bit or enlighten me, you can send me an email so we'll connect on LinkedIn, Google scholar or academia not stay here and bicker like market women.
