0. Obtain SIN
1. open an account
2. get a phone plan
3. get an accommodation (On the assumption you have a temporary place you laying your head, "Either the head is cute or big"wink tongue tongue tongue

czaratwork:
please for landed/settled members here please arrange in order of priority

1. open an account
2. get an accomodation
3. get a phone plan

it seems these three are interwoven because you will need the address for all others and you will need an account for the other payments and you will also need phone number for the other 2.

thank you

Hi Hamilton. I'm wondering the same thing. I saw your post several days ago and have been looking out for a response to it. It seems HR is not popular among immigrants hence the dearth of response and information on this thread. From some eesearch , I get the impression that its a difficult field to break into. I thought of doing a PGD, but I'm getting a bit confused. Please share any additional info you may come across. Good luck!

What info do you need about HR in Canada?

Hello, being the subject matter expert yourself, you might want to check directly on job search sites to see what the trend is for this profession across various provinces. This is the same strategy I would advise for anyone looking at coming to Canada in various professional fields as well as reaching out to people in your field through LinkedIn or through family and friends already here.

A sample job search I just did can be found here, https://ca.indeed.com/Radiation-Protection-jobs

You can also take a look at these few sites to see where you may like to get a certification;

I'm seriously considering doing a Master's degree in HR when I land Canada and taking up a job in HR. Please if anyone has the answer to Arielle's question, I will greatly benefit from it. Please answer us.

Hi I have read extensively. Manitoba seems to have an easier route and Ontario the hardest route. Most certainly You have to do either a certificate course or diploma. Do you have HR experience in Nigeria before now or you are switching up careers like me?

Re: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by Arielle: 6:48pm On Sep 06, 2017
Thanks guys for all your answers. I wanted to know what the prospects are for a PGD in HR management. I understand its quite a difficult field to break into. At my age I don't really have that much time to spend looking to land a job, or to grow within a reasonable time.
I have a degree in law but my work experience (over 20 years) is in corporate communications and some HR (training and development). I'm looking at starting my own consultancy after gaining a couple of years experience. But as its a new environment, any unexpected opportunities may arise. I'm open to moving in a different but related direction.
Hamilton I answered but it bounced back.

Anything oh! At this point any advise would be really helpful. Canada is a weird country, though. Where you decide to settle depends on the kind of job you want. I also hear there is still high unemployment in a lot of areas. Are you in HR? In Toronto? I really don't want to go to 'Winterpeg'!

From what I gathered, if you have 3 yrs job experience in your country . You can skip some stage 1 exams and move up to stage two. To be honest from what I read , when you do th exams your chances are pretty high. Its like getting professional qualification it bumps you up. The issue however is that Canada is an exetremly educated country so jobs. are filled up pretty quickly.

Please I need an advice. I am planning to migrate to Alberta. Most importantly I plan to start afresh once I arrive. I need advice on what certificate or diploma program I can do so as to get a good job. Gurus in the house, maternal, Salford, Congo and blackbuddy please kindly give suggestions. I dont have any preferences just something that will make me job ready. Am coming as a permanent resident.

Hi.
HR is not that difficult to break into.
Step 1. Kite your CV on those websites and see what kind of response you get or how many responses. For instance if you get recruiters scrambling to get your attention you will have the feel you doing the right thing

Step 2. Network with people within that location on LinkedIn

Step dydx Register with the professional body recognised in your location. HRPA is for Ontario. I got admitted into two bodies (Ontario and Alberta) but selected to stick with Ontario because I don't have 1100 CDN to be paying annually for membership fees and not that CPHR is recognised in Ontario. It is not recognised. Mbok, no time to waste money.

I can share personal experience and strategies some1 have engaged so far. Not fully landed but has attended quite a number of interviews via Skype. They all want him to show face to progress to final stage... so he is showing face soon grin. I posted a video on acing interviews. You can review it and adhere to some of the guidelines.

What i can tell you is there is need for HR skill set but competition is high too so you must bring your A game to the table.
What else specifically do you want to know, I may be able to answer one or two.
Cheers

Hi, it's always good to start from the known and then move to the unknown. That being said, what is your professional background so that we can review what transferrable skills you possess that will aid your transition to another field?

I'm in HR and in Toronto.
To be relevant in this field you need to write the certification exams like Cke 1&2 to be a Certified Human Resource Professional. That will be your starting point and you can move up from there....
You could also do other certifications depending on ur area of expertise such as payroll certifications, compensation and benefits, etc

You will also register to be a member of HRPA. Human Resources Professional Association. They usually organize job fairs and you can apply to HR jobs from their portal.

If you have the required skill sets for a job; you won't be unemployed. You will definitely find something.

Also, while searching for jobs you could offer to volunteer with united ways,Costi,Ymca, etc. Volunteering is a big thing in Canada and looks good on your resume as an immigrant.

Am not in Canada yet but they do admit if you complete the pre-requisite courses such as Anatomy and physiology 1&2, Microbiology, Statistics and some other courses. Just look up their respective pre-requisite that will help you narrow down the best school for you.Incase you want to take that route check Athabasca University, they do the pre-requisite courses online and at your own pace. Success

Hi,

Pls, I'd like some clarification on this: is our income/tax records in Nigeria required for a new immigrant? If yes, how many years do they usually ask for? I have read somewhere that they may ask for the records of 3yrs prior to landing...but it wasn't quite clear. Thanks

I was thinking you should have done those courses in your bsc as that is the reason you have to send your transcript. I did those courses already in my bsc.

Will check the Athabaska university though....thanks for the info
