It is no news that anyone who studied anything can be a marketer in Nigerian banks. So many medical doctors, vets, pharmacists, lawyers etc have become marketers because commercial banks are the major employers of labour in Nigeria and their pay is very attractive.

However, the CBN shake-down on banks and the world economic recession brings a lot of concern regarding job security and the future of "marketers". Many banks have begun downsizing and retrenchments and most of the victims are marketers, this shows that no marketer is indispensable and the axe can come down on anyone anytime. What does the future hold for retrenched marketers now? a pharmacist who has not been able to practice his profession becomes jobless, where does he start from? what pharmaceutical organisation would be willing to accept him when he has no relevant experience?

Is it time for people to begin to think of their long-term careers rather than just immediate need for good pay because most marketers will get to a point in their careers where a question mark arises as to which way forward? Should people who have become bank marketers out of the need to survive start looking outside marketing and thinking of the career they've always wanted, something with a better job security or should they just go with the wind and follow their marketing path for immediate survival?

Nigeria will get to a. point where doctors, nurses n engineers would not wb allowed to become. marketers.

Although this post is old let’s face the facts (industry insiders in branch operations)

Anybody can work in branch operations in a bank with just 2 weeks training or less.
What is that specialized skill that you we have that differentiates us from those outside the industry.
The truth is branch operations is just so much activity without any specialty.
Try applying for any other role outside branch operations and see how minimal your skills achieved in branch operations apply outside.

I totally agree with Op, I'm currently into bank marketing job for 3 months now and can't wait to have a Good offer coz, if you don't bring money in you ain't safe

from my experience I think self made is the best, no pressure or whatsoever

The pressure is more when you own your own business. It's just that you are the one applying the pressure on yourself.

haha u may say so grin but you are right about asking her about what she wants. I really havent asked her that question since she got into uni tho. There is one thing that makes me look down on private jobs and that's job security. Govt jobs may not pay more but you are rest assured you wont get to your office one morning just to meet a sack letter on your table. I am sure she have better plans for herself too but i just hope things works out as planned after her sevice

just after her graduation please ask her what she wants for herself... My dad never asked me what I wanted, he just kept pushing me up and down to do masters...

As if masters will put food in my mouth.. ASUU strike is here now, shebi the masters degree will give me food.

He just kept silent since I got a job in the bank because I stopped asking for money...

The sooner we begin to ask our children or younger ones what they really want in life, you will see that the family will progress instead of waiting in vain for non existent jobs ..

Now I dumped my msc to train myself in ICT.

I'd disagree with u a bit on that ma.

As an industry insider, i can tell u that marketers r the only hope these banks have going forward.

As a matter of fact, banks have started streamlining their operations departments to make em more efficient & able to deliver exceptional banking experiences for the customers whom the marketers bring in.

The simple effect of this is that redundant operations staff r now being redeployed to marketing or shown the door if they cant take the heat.

One of the industry giants noted for its wide reach has a new policy that sees to it that ppl of a certain paygrade should not be in operations instead they r told to generate business to justify their high pay.

So If anyone is planning on going into banking & doesnt have business generation mindset, then forget it especially with the current climate.

Bro, you have said all i would have said. Kudos. I wonder why people just put up shallow write ups online especially in this era where we have lots of online readers. Poor research work and an absolutely empty thesis.

But I know quite a number of people that have been disengaged over the last few months, most of them are marketers, how do you explain the fact that banks need marketers and yet marketers are being fired and no one is recruiting

You think you know but whatever they tell you may not be the truth; they may have been asked to go due to poor appraisals. The banking sector is not the Civil or Public service where you are guaranteed of 35years whether you are redundant or not. Survival is STRICTLY based on performance hence the high pay you get as a core or full staff.

The question has been answered earlier on but let me enlighten you more. This is how it works ;staff (mostly marketers) are laid off and the vacancies are almost immediately occupied by supposed value adding existing or new staff with promises of exciting businesses and depposits. Your survival basically is a function of 1. The profitability of your branch 2. The deposits and the portfolio you manage and 3. Your disposition towards your job. No stories, just bring money and you are free.

Not just money too; low cost deposits.

Banking is no longer what it used to be
All the flash that came with it in the past ...gone!

Now you see young people under heavy pressure wearing suits to cover up ...& owing heavily just to keep up with the jonses.

What baffles me the most? Every business in the country goes through these banks yet some people cannot see profitability in them despite entire business process being laid bare to the bankers when the businesses apply for loans. Instead what you'll be hearing is "I've been in this industry for 14 years..." who you epp? Even yourself?

Most of them despite the huge salary, once they're kicked out of the system start gasping for air like fish out of water.

Not to talk of now, if no be salary cut, na employment cut, tension everywhere...and you call that a life?

Easiest way to ruin a guy? Employ him into banking straight out of NYSC ...then leave him there for over 5 yrs. The stop functioning as normal human beings.

Look closely, I'm sure there's an example near you to confirm this.

You are very right bro....VERY RIGHT..but,this applies to the simple majority who do not have plans. Such category of people can also be found nearly in every sphere of life. Especially the oil sector.

Interesting to see this on fp after 8 yrs. Moral of the story: delay is not denial.

And the banking industry has not changed one bit since then.
