Our Insistence On Quota System Is Causing Serious Problem On Our Education - Don by shehuolayinka(m): 6:48am On Sep 27, 2017
A Professor of Guardian and Counseling, at the University of Lagos, Ngozi Osarenren says the future of education is in a serious problem because of our insistence on quota system.

The Don said this during her Keynote address at a summit organized recently by the Good News Baptist Church, Surulere to proffer solution to the sorry state of education in the country.

She also said the future of education lies in the hands of everyone, and should not be left alone with government,

She said, “The future of education in Nigeria is in our hands. In this country everybody claim to be expert in education and many of them don’t even know about government policy on education. The tertiary level is in a bad state because the basic education which is the feeder is in a bad state. Look, if you don’t get the basic right, the tertiary won’t okay” she said.

“there is dishonesty everywhere, Academic Staff Union of Universities, went on strike for some weeks and called it off on Tuesday and you won’t believe that none of have resumed. Dishonesty amongst ourselves, with government, parents. There is a big problem, not only government but parents also, how many of our parents bother to always check children in school. We should always learn to bond with our children. The future of our education is in our hands.

“A federal university in Nigeria, (UNILAG) pays N14000 as tuition fee for a year and with that we should ask how can we sustain our education system with that. Today in Nigeria, people have killed education for their benefit and parents say there is nothing God cannot do, stop saying that, we should always strive for what we all can do. We can’t talk about world class universities without doing something about our basic education. Let me tell you, we have more pupils in public schools and not as what people believe they we have more in the private.

“It is not like that, we need to look at the basic and work on it. We need to be begin to search our conscience and speak to ourselves about the mess in Nigeria and ask what we can do about it”.

“We have parent who engage in fraudulent practices, paying for children education, results and you should know that, what you are doing is showing and telling your child about how to get things done in the easy and crooked ways”.

“We have parent buying smart phones 200000 for children at age 18 and 16 and we believe that what we are doing is okay. We are talking about honesty. ASUU went on strike in 2009 and the same reason they still went on strike in 2017 and we are talking about development, when all this things is happening”.

“The quality of education remains what it is because we don’t have quality people in our education system. The future of education is in a serious problem because of our insistence in quota system. Quota system has really affected our education system. When we give concession for some to enter school, will they also be giving concessions to write examination?

She further schools in Ghana cant be compared to Nigeria, “We talk about schools in Ghana, do you know that lecturers in Ghanaian universities can’t be compared to the ones we have in Nigerian Universities and you still Nigerian parents struggling to send their children to study in Ghana, same with the private universities when the quality of education there can’t be compared to the ones we have in public universities”.

“How do we expect education to be better, when we don’t have teachers of deep content on subjects like Mathematics, physics and chemistry and we also have teachers who are not respected and I wonder how we expect our education to be better, when we all say it’s not our business and we expect things to be better”.

“The future of education in Nigeria is in all our hands, fathers especially, it is not about dropping money alone, you must partake in the education of your child. We all should know that people only measure you by your children and the cars or properties you have”.

Also Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, an Education consultant said the citizenry always need to demand for quality education from government.

According to her, “There is no way our education can rise beyond the quality of teachers, same way you can’t have a good quality tertiary education without the basic education being good. We are sitting on a keg of gunpowder with the amount of children we have out of school. We are living in an environment where the next generation is not being educated properly” she said.

“School is not about structure, but about the learning quality. We have many children that cannot read. I am of the opinion that if government say they want to educate children, they should their job and not be expecting people input. I am of the school of thought that government should be held accountable and responsible for what it says. If it say, it want to provide free education, let them do it accordingly”.

“If we should privatize education what will happen to the child of the cleaners, farmers and the mechanics, they also need education and we need to demand government provide quality education and we need to start asking for quality standard and not low standard, because public education is the most important as it is where the children of the masses and someone came to talk about the amount of child out of school and we are happy about it.

We are still teaching students on 19 century, while we are in 21 century and we expect things to be better”.

On the roles of mission in academic education in Nigeria, Mrs. Yemisi Subaru, said christian need to come together for the betterness of education

“The reason we are talking about failure is because the church has failed, before we had the church and government working hand in hand for education and everything was okay” she said.

“When the missionaries came, they built schools because they understood and know it important in evangelism in education and apart from that, it worked well during that time and I ask what has happened?

“The quick fix to future of education in Nigeria, the church has a large role to play. Government collected missionary schools from us and we sat down and said nothing about it. We have churches where they build structure that people will come into not more than four hours and to me, I think we need to turn those structures to educational use”.

I think it is time as Christians to go back to school, as it is a means for evangelism. Yes we blame government, but I believe we can put together a Christian curriculum for education, I know schools in Nigeria that don’t use the Nigeria education curriculum and I don’t think we need to wait for government, we need to speak to one another and say enough is enough. We spend money in expensive concert, we need to stop this and look at education at our end”

Those telling us that paying ''14,000Naira'' tuition fee in a ''federal university'' is too small had a completely free education and were even fed 3square meals a day!!! They are complaining that fees paid by Nigerian students are too small when they have completely looted all the resources making it difficult to either subsidize education or make it completely free!! If education wasn't free in the past,99 percent of our leaders would have been illiterates because even their families wont have been able to afford their fees much more for those who acquired govt sponsored foreign education! Let us start by blocking all the looted funds to finance education and if that isnt enough,Nigerians will be willing to pay ANY amount to get quality education!!!

Will concessions be given to write exams?

People who can pass exams are kept out of school because of their tribe, religion and financial status, while numbskulls are ushered through.

Now we have a true Afonja Professor in JAMB saying 120 should be a general cut-off point when I (maybe because I wasn't from the "catchment area"wink) only managed to scrap into Engineering with 227 more than 20 years ago!

Quota system is the most harebrained policy ever!

First off, completely free, quality public education is not tenable anymore. Back then, you had waayyyy fewer people in schools so it was much easier to use the available resources to provide free, quality education to those who intended to go to school. Those times have passed though. Now, everybody is going to school. If Nigeria is to provide free, quality public education right now, we would be sinking in at least 50-70% of our entire budget on education alone, leaving other sectors like health care, power, security and the likes to rot. Now I'm not saying the government is actually properly funding any of these right now because we know that due to systemic corruption most of the funds appropriated for pretty much anything in this country get siphoned into private pockets but I'm saying that all things being equal, even if we completely eliminate corruption, it is not really possible to provide quality education on the cheap anymore. Look at the countries we consider to be advanced - you know how expensive public education is in those countries? Even where the government tries to subsidize education by providing student loans and the rest, it means students are left with debts to pay off even before they finish school. Let's face it, if you want quality, you will have to cough up for it. It's how a capitalist or semi-capitalist system works.

Free education n free 3 meals is what destroyed out education system in the first place. U don't expect over 150 million people to go to skol for free, it's a very idiotic idea.

Go and check the top 10, top 100 n top 200 universities in the world n show me which one offers free education for all.

In India tuition for cheap universities is around 200 USD per month so don't wander why India rose to great heights in recent memory.

They say this to justify senseless extravagance, ostentatious spending for frivolous reasons, yet they want crucial things as education for free.

I understand your point. But u must know this- the citizens keep making sacrifices in order to get a better country but what sacrifices are our leaders making? I pay for security in my area,I pay for fuel to power my generator,I use water from my borehole,I pay high transport fares to and from work? What is govt doing for us? In those countries u are talking about, govts give education loans. Obama was still paying his even while in govt. Are there govt-backed education loans in Nigeria? Is there any employment plans for graduates if students are to borrow education loans from private sources? Govt and citizens MUST WORK TOGETHER to get a better nation. Both MUST make sacrifices and not just the people only.

U didn't add that u use a very expensive mobile phone, u own a laptop n many other things that are very expensive, that shows that even though nigeria isn't good enough to cover us all, a substantial number is covered.

Government actually subsidizes education, health and many more. Even though we all know they aren't doing enough, we should also know that they are trying in accordance to the little revenue n subsequently budget we dish out every year.

We are presently not making enough money now so that's one of the biggest problem in nigeria.

Finally a fierce lack of knowledge from FG to SG down to the people is the number 1 problem holding us.

We have so many issues plaguing this country from all sectors and income generated cannot sustain or solve these issues. What kind of sacrifices do you want from government exactly? We have to come to terms with reality, the money generated by the educational system can't solve half the issues plaguing our universities alone not to talk of secondary and primary. Our universities need to start generating reasonable amount to contribute to the our national revenue. Until we pass through this fire before we can finally relax if not we'll just be beating around the bush

the problem is that money is being wasted on irrelevant things while critical sectors like education, power and infrastructure are underfunded! Do u know how much Nass members are receiving a month for doing almost nothing? What is Nigeria doing with a bi-carmeral legislature when there is little resources? Do u know how much is budgetted as security votes by our leaders? Do u know how much Niger-delta miitants are paid every month just to maintain peace? Niger-delta militants are even being paid more than NYSC members! There are many wastages in every facet of this country.

I can't believe that man thinks the government is making enough scarify for the country .A typical example is our law makers earning, Nigerian law makers are among the highest paid in the world they earn more than what their peers in developed world like Britain earn, what is stopping them from cutting their earning? And the irony is that this country workers are among the worst paid in the world.

It is great to see Nigerians discussing the real problems with the education sector.

And not the "quota system".

The title might also be misleading. She said a lot of things and included the quota system as a problem. But she only spent 2 lines on it.

Versions of the quota system exist all over the world and they only serve to create some sense of equality.

Its impact on our declining education sector is minimal. We have bigger problems with education, and like I said, I am happy Nairalanders have brought up some of the biggest issues with it.

Epileptic power supply with horrible medical services despite billions of dollars already pumped into those projects. You meet graduates everyday who can't articulate their thoughts, talkless of putting them in concise language; primary and secondary school students who can't spell their names.
