Why destroying them when we have ill equipped security personnel all over? Maybe they want to still steal some of them and sent it back to the owners while claiming thatvthey have been destroyed or maybe they want to resell them to Nigeria security forces after claiming they have been destroyed. No rational person or institution will give this type of suggestion.

I believe d destruction is not neccesary, just as in the case of money launderers and treasury looters, the assets are not destroyed, the resources can be put to better use than being destroyed

kirajustice:
The Nigerian senate has ordered for the immediate destruction of firearms illegally imported into the country. This development is coming up shortly after the Nigerian customs has recorded seizures of over 2000 pump action rifles illegally imported into Nigeria from Turkey.

In a statement obtained by PoliticsNGR, the Senate president, Bukola Saraki stated that a bill to increase fines for illegally imported firearms, including firearms without valid licenses has passed a second reading in the Senate.

He stated; "The 8th Senate passed the Second Reading of the Bill to amend the Fire Arms Act to provide for the increase of fines and the destruction of all firearms that are illegally imported into the country or that are in the possession of individuals that do not have valid licenses.

With the recent reports of the Nigerian Customs Service finding 4 illegal shipments of firearms in the last few weeks, this Bill is pertinent, because, with its eventual passage, we will be strengthening the existing Fire Arms Act and making our nation safer.

Apart from the fines and other punitive measures that are imposed against individuals, we will also be looking at the laws that are currently in place to ensure that shipping agents and other companies that are involved in the importation of illegal firearms into the nation are held liable.

Now that the Bill has been sent to the Committee on Judiciary and Legal Matters for further work, we will be having a public hearing on this Bill, to seek the support of experts, security agencies and the general public in coming up with a thorough legislative strategy to combat the proliferation of weapons in our country and our communities."

May sense fall on all our leaders!!! Destroy wetin? Do our security agencies already have all the weapons they require? You wont have opportunity to make ficticious budget for arms if u dont destroy these ones! Now I see the reason!

With those weapons, we can start a little war with some oil rich banana republics and pump their oil.
Re: Seized Pump Action Rifles: Senate Orders Immediate Destruction, Increase Fines by Rajosh(m): 4:52pm On Sep 27, 2017
Destroy them? These weapons are better than those outdated things our military and police use. a times, I think these people don't even know what they're doing.
Re: Seized Pump Action Rifles: Senate Orders Immediate Destruction, Increase Fines by Nobody: 4:53pm On Sep 27, 2017
To destroy or not is surely not the decision of the Senate to make neither are they in a position to "order" the executive to destroy what is essentially evidence.

I wonder if these senators are worthy of managing a nursery school talk less of managing a whole nation. How can the decisions regarding to people's lives and well being be left in the hands of these people?
The report is that they ordered the destruction of the pump actions, I assume they were quoted out of context otherwise, I am wondering: Do they have the authority to order the destruction, especially since they plan to amend the concerned bill?

They just keep attempting to function as the executives. Besides, I also wonder if it is economical to destroy the guns or hand them over to security agencies that need the guns.

When I say these old men brain fuses are burnt
People think it's a joke.
Those guns should be shared among security agents.
Pump actions rifle are for close range combat
The police and prison warders can use such weapon effectively.
But the only thing on those idiots is to destroy.
And later they will be using our scarce resources to purchase weapons.

Also the importers should forfeite all their properties
If they destroy them will the owner still take home the ashes as property?

Those Pump actions are better than those useless world war II AK47 our nigeria police is using
Must you criticize?

How can pump action which is a short gun be better than an AK47 assault riffle?
So you want the police to face robbers using AK47 with ordinary pump action abi.

Look for something else to say.

My people perish for lack of knowledge...... Instead of destroying those weapons, why not hand them over to the security forces in the country, which i know they are all under equipped, especially the Nigeria police.

bros what are you saying...an average pump action has just 8 rounds and it is a semi automatic gun which means it does not reload by itself while Ak 47 has gives you 30 rounds and it is an automatic rifle and it covers more distance than any other rifle (sniper not included)

I would also hand over a letter of appreciation from the government to the importers while they step into Kuje prisons
I would vote for you any day

These idiots in the Senate.... hmmm hope say no be dem import am for the upcoming elections. I won't be surprised. Saraki has no power to order anything. Anytime the Senate gets excited in matters like this, it looks suspect. Only this year his bullet proof car was seized, there's no smoke without fire. They should put serial numbers on the pump action guns and give them to Prisons. And the importer should not be fined at all, he needs to be jailed.

sometimes you just have to support your jaw with your two hands while reading comments from supposed future leaders(youths) of this country. Imagine the youths saying that pump action seized by the Nigeria customs should be handed over to our military personnel. are we going forward or backwards?

Re: Seized Pump Action Rifles: Senate Orders Immediate Destruction, Increase Fines by kenmaro: 5:56pm On Sep 27, 2017
Why destroy them? Instead, it should be donated to the Nigerian police or advertised for any interested foreign African govt that may be interested in the purchase, then the proceeds be used for other meaningful development of benefit to Nigerians.

I suspect this is a way to share the arms among our politicians and top govt officials for their private use claiming that they have been destroyed.

that's a very radical approach to saving the very limited resources of our law enforcement units but our My My officials won't see it that way. they rather steal money through award of crazy contracts for weapons procurement
