regarding F16 Block 70+ and Gripen E IAF is not happy. Few of the problems cited by IAF in their reports are as under

Air-frame as of today and possible refinement in future

Un stable nature of airframe in low altitude and high altitude missions

Handling in mission load configs and over reliance on system to auto correct while bleeding energy and increasing risk of take down

Electro Magnectic Compatibility and Interference Generation - Emission issues, high susceptibility and negligible immunity inspite of on paper solutions saying otherwise.

Safety Reporting System showing limited system onboard sensing

Size of radar offered thereby limiting the tracking zone severely (atm ~ 50-60% of what is offered by Rafale RBE2 AESA in both SEs , exact numbers cant be revealed in public).

BVR capability is severely limited by Radar Range, power and most importantly for mid course updates for BVR missiles like AIM and Meteor.

High vulnerability to hacking and very low grade / absent Anti hack suit

Mission loads cited with A2A carrying 4+ BVR under standard conditions where maximum AD environment is present and thus impractical.

Mission loads cited with A2G mission packs under standard conditions where maximum AD environment present and thus impractical.

Both A2A and A2G missions severely limits G performance due to energy bleed, handling issues, airframe problems, EMI susceptibility and there by Mission Survivability decreases severely in emerging environments.

Mission success rates are compromised and there will be a loss towards sustaining a hi tempo engagement due to attrition very quickly and which will in turn reduce overall war fighting time frame.

IAF is pressing for more rafales

SPAS-15 is used by NSG (national security guards) only

they r mandated to carry out anti terrorist , anti hijacking and related tasks

in kashm pellet guns r used to target radical Islamist's who do mob action in order to distrupt search operations , try to help terrorists escape by coming in between forces and terrorists during fire fights , damage public property after every friday prayers , snatch weapons from on duty officers , attack minorities like Hindus and Sikhs , lob grenades moltov cocktails from among crowds at sentry posts and public servants , loot banks /shops etc

NIA national investigation agency which is a anti terror investigation agency busted the funding operations from across the boder couple of months ago , a large no of Islamists , businessmans, political leaders , linkmans , black marketeer were arrested their illegal assets seized and cases filed against them.

plus all funding sources for these demonstrations by the jackasses were blocked which included through haj pilgrims who while in saudi would get money from pa...... handlers and when they returned they would distribute it to the people for demonstrations.

plus the demonetization stopped the printing of fake indian currency by is/i and hence no funds available to distribute

all these led to drastic drop in demonstration except barring when some mofo terrorists gets killed .

these demonstrations happens in 5 districts only which is the strong hold of sunni radical fuckers

rest 30 districts which have shia ,hindu, sikh, buddhists r peaceful and no problem.

just a couple of years more then these mofo will get the lessons of their life cool

plus do u know recently a popular newspaper in pak....... occupied kas...... did a survey and found 75% of the population dont want to stay in pak........ grin grin grin

when the article got published, the next day the newspaper was shut down by isi and military grin

al jazzera bbc dont publish these kind of news becz it does not suit their agenda that is keep other countries burning and further religion based strife .

forget the engines they r showing a brave face

from what i know personally it is basically a PR

same situation with PAKFA according to IAF The number of corrections (enhancements) mandated by them for FGFA program has jacked up to almost 70 and now is closing to almost 150+ for rectifying deficiencies as identified by IAF in PAKFA and this in turn means such a massive no of changes will result in an all together new aircraft from ground up which i doubt the russians will agree too in the first place. lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed

I'm aware of the Liberia incident. Which is why the 2 countries are always assigned sectors very far from each other on UN missions. grin grin grin
And gosh, are your neighbours' pilots risk-averse!!! When they still had air assets in-country, they flat out refused to fly FIB taskings. Even with the peace-keeping MONUSCO, they'd first call home for orders before flying any place where shots had been fired!!!

I've read something like this before. The IAF is not interested in gripen because the engines and radars which are major components of the aircraft come from a third party.

They don't want the mig 35 because it won't really provide and major benefit as they can easily upgrade the mig 29 to meet the specification of mig 35.

They rejected F-16 because F-16 design is about 40 years old already and they would need to fly the aircraft for another 40 years which doesn't really make sense.

The Rafael was bought because the French would transfer some of it technology to India which would be useful in development other Tejas or any other locally made fighter jet. Some still believe India would still place more order for Rafael.

Above all, IAF want to have only 4 fighter jets in service by 2025 (Tejas, Rafael, SU-30 and 5th gen fighter).

actual the matter with the jet procurement is much more complicated

IAF never wanted single engine jets , they r thinking militarily as per their assessment and they r correct to do so

but the government got in the single engine procurement program to enable their strategic policy or policies in the future

government is looking at this in a much bigger perspective out side the realm of military

this is part of a greater geopolitical game being played for hedging ur bets for a defined goal or goals

i will not say more
but lets see how it unfolds

in my opinion the best way to do business in this sector

component level business has lot of money as profit margins r way better without having to sacrifice ur arms and legs in order to secure a deal eg at a system level

also tech flow is cyclic, so nothing to lose

What's with the silence though?
I know the unhappy history of our previous dalliance;
that our state-owned behemoth is trying to get in with your garrulous neighbour; and
the politicos currently in charge of both our countries don't think highly of each other.
Any other reason of which I'm not aware?

On the other hand, naturally I'm quite gratified our militaries pushed back hard and insisted that despite political contretemps, IBSAMAR Exercises had to continue and Chinese designs on the Indian Ocean Rim were not desirable.

drdo multiple kill vehicle project

it consist of a carrier vehicle with multiple KV

it is designed to defeat salvos of ballistic missiles or provide kill redundancy to a single maneuvering hostile warhead

the carrier vehicle comes with its own sensors to detect and launch its KVs towards a single or multiple targets.
the KVs then use their own terminal sensors to conduct kills autonomously.

basically this concept tries to bring down the cost of ABM as enemy relies on cheap multiple BM launches which then have to be countered by expensive single interceptors to take down each hostile target individually.

in its simplest form it can be compared to the orbital kill vehicle which will stay up to counter incoming threats for a period of time

recently the project director Mrs.Shashikala confirmed that first phase of testing is over after successful HTK test fire, saying that after US and France India became the third country to test this technology.

in my opinion they tested the initial building blocks ie the KV .
next phase they will test carrier vehicle and then gradually progress it up with multiple KV till the final design goals of the project r met.

countries come together to Design the Largest Radio-Telescope on Earth (Square Kilometer Array)

work has already started towards the design of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), which will be the world’s largest and most sensitive radio telescope.

The total area of the full SKA will be roughly one square kilometre – this is 50 times the sensitivity, and 10000 times the survey speed, of the best telescopes of today.

This telescope is an international project, and will be co-located in radio quiet regions of South Africa and Australia.

The Telescope Manager (TM) for SKA will be designed by an international consortium, led by the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA-TIFR) in Pune, India. Of the 10 different components of the SKA, the Telescope Manager is a crucial element, and will perform the task of sending control commands to various subsystems, ensure successful astronomical observations, cooordinate between the various SKA components and the users, continuously monitor the status of the telescopes as well as ensure safety. NCRA-TIFR will draw upon its experience in building, operating and maintaining the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT, Khodad, Maharashtra), the worlds largest low-frequency radio telescope, in the work for the Telescope Manger. Ongoing upgrade activities at the GMRT will also be beneficial to this work.

The TM consortium has ten international partners from 8 countries (India, South Africa, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Italy and Portugal), all of whom will pool in their knowledge of designing and building such monitor and control systems for large telescopes in the past.

Members of the Telescope Manager consortium are :

National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Pune, India
Tata Research Development and Design Centre, Pune, India
SKA South Africa, South Africa
Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Australia
Science and Technology Facilities Council, United Kingdom

AstroSat Picture of the Month - Sep 2017
WLM: Forming stars efficiently in grand isolation

Dwarf Galaxy WLM

Located in the constellation Cetus, 3 million light years away, is a faint dwarf galaxy, Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte, or WLM for short. It is relatively isolated, lying in the outskirts of our Local Group of Galaxies. It has a mass that is thousands of times less than the Milky Way and a metallicity that is only 13% solar. Lower metallicity implies less heavier elements, which in turn hinders forming new stars. So why did AstroSat even look at this galaxy? WLM is a dwarf irregular galaxy with a low mass and metallicity and exists in solitude. Nevertheless, it manages to form new stars extremely efficiently. Adjusted for their respective masses, WLM forms stars at a rate that is 12 times higher than our own Milky Way! Astronomers are still not sure as to how WLM does this. Annapurni Subramaniam and her student Chayan Mondal at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bengaluru wanted to understand how this diminutive galaxy is such an efficient star factory. They decided to use the Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope on board the AstroSat to image the younger star clusters in WLM. In this image, the blue dots are the star clusters imaged in Far Ultra-Violet (130-180 nm) and the yellow dots are those imaged in Near Ultra-Violet (180-300 nm). They are currently analysing this data and will soon be able to fit one more piece into the puzzle that is WLM.

Info: AstroSat, India's first dedicated multi-wavelength space observatory, was launched by ISRO on 28 Sep 2015. It has five intruments on board - the Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope, the Soft X-ray Telescope, the Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter, the Cadmium-Zinc-Telluride Imager and the Scanning Sky Monitor.
