Before Nigeria's independence, the igbos had already suppassed the yorubas in education, Yorubas are able to have all these first professors during and after the civil war where the igbos had lost everything and had to start from the scratch while the west suffered no war and yorubas where going to school.... mind you the first set of Nigerian VCs in the premiere higher institutions of Nigeria were all igbos from Yabatech to UI to UniLag to UNN. Again igbos were the first set of Masters holders to occupy the Nigerian military when the military was still made up of uneducated recruits.Ojukwu was the first masters holder to join the Nigerian Army, Ifeajuna, Nzeogu, Aguyi ironsi were all university graduates..So after the civil war and the losts that came afterward for the igbos, it is understandable that the yorubas may have many first....

do a little more research and find out when they had those professorship, you will find out it is between the 1970 to 1990s which was when the igbos where still finding their foot back..

again should it be the first professors? i think it should be who first had a PhD in those fields, professorship doesn't paint the right picture in my opinion...

Really war of less than three years made you people lose all your firsts, Ipob and fibs.

A thread has been created for PhDs holders, you guys were still the runts and fries. Being a vc is an appointment not a degree, the most senior academic then in ui, was professor Ajose but was not appointed by ncnc led government, but he went to pioneer as the vc of western region Oau, the best university in Nigeria till date.

No tell me another tale by moon light.

Poppycock. I dare you (and PrecisionFX) to show proof from the NUC to back your claim! You people are scammers. Where are these Imo professors? The igbo guy that made that false claim about Imo having the highest number of professors never presented any shred of evidence to that effect, in the usual igbo fashion. Peter Okebukola (pro chancellor of Crawford University) recently carried out a thorough research on the number of professors in most Nigerian universities. You people should counter him with your own findings, make it public (like Okebukola did) and then you will be taken seriously, rather than making spurious claims. Okebukola's findings are consistent with this OP's coz SW universities still dominate the list with the highest number of professors (as shown below). You people should stop this nonsense of cooking up stuff just to massage your own egos.

What is you people,you people?
I got my information from Nuc data base which was released in the recent past. If it no longer tally with what is obtainable right now then it is not my fault.
Does a research showing the highest number of professors currently employed within the academic system equate the total number of professors produced by each ethnicity in Nigeria.
I don't rely on that sort of sentiment. As at the last report, the East turn out the highest number of professors.

war did not make us lose any first...it only slowed down our development. while the war was on, the west was peaceful, students were going to school and economic activities was going on

After the war, igbos had lost everything, both material, social and political hence their first challenge was survival and reintegration. Many bright minds had died during the war(eg pius okigbo who was a potential literary noble laureate), the ones that survived could not afford to go back to school because many had lost their parents in the course of the war and couldn't pay their fee so they had to take to menial jobs to feed and survive, the ones whose parents survive have lost their wealth through abandon property and 20pounds policy and other state policy to emasculated the people from the eastern region...again many were taken again to asylum/ refugee camps outside the country to Europe, America and other African countries

imagine that chinua achebe, chima amanda adichie's father or philip emegwali had died during the civil war

in all, what it means is that, the west vis a vis the yorubas had no competition, hence they occupied all the spaces left behind by the igbos and so in education, they will have more people going to school hence will produce more doctorates and professors at that time and of that generation..Things have changed now...The igbos you love to hate are back.

First Nigerian Professor of Urban and Regional Planning is not Prof. Adepoju Onibokun(Iwoye-Ijesha, Osun State), it was Prof. Luke Oladele Olajuyin, lectured at OAU and he is from EFON ALAAYE IN EKITI STATE...

this guy you can be very funny with the way you twist things...so if UI for example has those number of professors, does it make UI a state or does it mean all the professors in UI are from oyo state or yorubas..

OAU for example that i know very well, has over 30 Igbo professors that i know in addition to the ones i do not know, plus lot more readers and senior lectures both the ones i know and do not know

Once they are doing their igbo cultural day, you will see them.

Why are u posting table of Nigerian universities and their number of professors

If university of ilorin for example has 500 professors, how does that translate to 500 yoruba professors...grin

In ur list schools like esut and ABSU have zero professors.
