Candidate of the United Progressive Party (UPP) for the November 18, 2017 Anambra governorship election, Chief Osita Chidoka has called on the Federal Government to use the occasion of the remembrance of the massacre of the innocent in Asaba during the civil war 50 years ago and heal the wounds of the families and region affected by issuing an official regret. Ndigbo were affected in the massacre. A statement by the Director Media, Osita Chidoka Campaign, Viola Ifeyinwa Okolie, said Chidoka noted that the fact that Ndigbo still hold unto the memories of the ugly incident 50 years after, is indicative of the dire need for genuine healing. According to the statement, “The UPP candidate, a staunch advocate of justice, equity and fairness, notes that a soothing word from the Federal Government at occasions such as this will act as a mollifying balm to the survivors and relatives of the deceased. “Chief Chidoka maintains that ndi Igbo are a peaceful, accommodating and forgiving people whose only demand has been for a fairer union; a union founded on justice, equity and fairness, and where no man is oppressed or relegated. He believes a fairer union where all obstacles to equal opportunities are removed, will assuage frayed nerves and ease the pains of the past. “In the same vein, Chief Chidoka urges the military high command to release the report of its investigation on alleged abuses and violation of the rights of citizens by security officials involved in the widely criticized Operation Python Dance in the southeast. “The UPP candidate recalls that the military had acknowledged that it was investigating reports of alleged rights violations including a video showing the dehumanization of civilians by some soldiers along Port-Harcourt – Enugu Expressway. “He therefore urges the military to accelerate its inquest, make its findings public and apply appropriate punishments on errant officers, while mechanisms are put in place to end such violations. “UPP candidate commends well-meaning Nigerians from other parts of the country who identify with the anniversary including Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka and Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Rev. Father Matthew Hassan Kukah. “He also urges the continued spirit of brotherliness among Nigerians while assuring of his commitment towards the pursuit of the interest of ndi-Igbo through institutionalized legal and legitimate means.” Source: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/10/asaba-massacre-ndigbo-deserve-apologies-chidoka/

Why wasnt an official apology from Nigeria to Ndigbo drafted and given to the Secretary to the Federal Government, an Ndigbo, in the years Jonathan was in power and Ndigbo served as "the pillars to his government"? |

Tolexander:The coup of Jan 66 was a multi-woven agenda. 1 - In the 50s Igbos in Lagos had suddenly gained a new political awareness and empowerement that was never before known or practiced in their culture and tradition anywhere. With the new knowledge and consciousness came "restlessness". This restlessness in the Igbos of Lagos were pronounced and championed by those of Onitsha and ANIOMA background. This political empowerement and elitism of the 40s and 50s Lagos is the residual outcome of longlasting confrontation dated back into mid 1800s and crossed into the twentieth century between Yoruba political groups on one hand, and the Yorubas and Britain on the other. The turf battles produced a unique political dynamism throughout Yorubaland. 2 - The creation of additional regions out of West, North and East - midWest, middleBelt and COR respectively. The alliance between North and East stoked the demands for midWest using Oba of Bini as the grandpatron of the movement for the creation of midWest. The grand plan is to excise West from the dividends of delta oil and afterward subjugate North through military domination and steer dividends of oil into the East. Prior to 1963 the propagandists were operating from behind the curtain. Soon as midWest became reality in 63 they came out from behind curtain and showed their fangs. Ibos started sabotaging efforts and sacrifices made by Edo, Urhobo, Isoko, the advocates and champions of the referendum that created midWest. These Ibos were the Onistshans and Aniomans. This was the second restlessness. Ibo politicians in Lagos bankrolled the Jan coup. When war broke out in 67 Aniomans were desperate to finish what they failed to accomplish in 63 and Jan66. Ordinary civilians that would think nothing of joining army now found the inspiration to occupy and own Lagos and revenge the political marginalization of Yoruba elites in Lagos, in addition to cornering oil dividends. These young and spirited fighter corps were majority Aniomans. On their way to Lagos they suffered villagers and communities along the path till they faced opposition and were defeated in Ore. The soldiers of Nigerian Army knew who was who based on spoken Ibo....they could tell the Isuama dialect different from Omambala or Ngwa. This is how they knew who they were fighting and why the remaining population must be decimated when they reached Asaba. |
