NAF HOLDS THIRD QUARTER 2017 ROUTE MARCH EXERCISE

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) today held its Third Quarter 2017 Route March Exercise for officers and airmen/airwomen serving in Abuja. Led by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, the personnel marched off from Mogadishu Cantonment to Niger Barracks and back, covering a distance of 10km walk, within the Abuja Metropolis. The aim of the quarterly exercise is to constantly keep NAF personnel physically and mentally fit to enable them discharge their constitutional duties efficiently. Today’s exercise also witnessed a large turnout of members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who joined the NAF personnel.

Addressing participants at the end of the route march, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar commended them for demonstrating a high level of physical fitness, noting that no matter how intelligent or dedicated they were, it would be practically impossible to effectively discharge their statutory responsibilities without a sound body. He reminded personnel of the need to exercise regularly because “today’s military is a military that requires a sound mind in a sound body”, he said. The CAS, who spoke on the current efforts at addressing the security challenges in the country, stated that the NAF and other security agencies were working in synergy to ensure a conducive and peaceful atmosphere for businesses to thrive.

While expatiating on some of the recent landmark achievements in the NAF, Air Marshal Abubakar recalled that the NAF successfully airlifted relief materials donated by the Federal Government to the mudslide and flood victims in Sierra Leone, using the NAF C-130 Hercules aircraft. The CAS also said that the NAF, in recent times, had successfully airlifted participants of the National Defence College in Abuja and the Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji to various African countries on study tours and would continue to do so. He added that the NAF was also on the verge of airlifting participants at the Air Force War College on a study tour of 2 African countries. He then commended the personnel, remarking that all the feats of the NAF would not have been possible without their commitment and dedication to duty. Speaking further, the CAS informed the personnel that the Federal Government and indeed Nigerians in general appreciated their sacrifices. He advised personnel not to rest on their oars but rather redouble their efforts until those efforts result in completely stabilizing the security situation in the country.

COMMANDANT NATIONAL DEFENCE COLLEGE COMMENDS NAF EFFORTS IN INTERNAL SECURITY OPERATIONS

The Commandant of the National Defence College (NDC) Abuja, Rear Admiral Adeniyi Osinowo, has commended the efforts of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in the fight against insurgency and other forms of criminalities in the country. The Commandant, who was on a courtesy visit to the NAF Headquarters in Abuja, also seized the opportunity to appreciate the NAF’s continuous support to the College. He cited the airlifting of staff and participants of the College during its study tours as well as the NAF’s administrative support towards meeting the manpower needs of the College. Rear Admiral Osinowo stated that he was at the NAF Headquarters to identify with the successes so far recorded by the NAF under the leadership of Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.

According to the Commandant, the College is currently focussing its research efforts on addressing pertinent security challenges confronting the country. He added that efforts were ongoing to reposition the Centre for Strategic Research and Studies (CSRS) to support the Federal Government and the Armed Forces in proffering solutions to the nation’s challenges by offering policy options. In addition, the Commandant said the College would work towards improving synergy with other institutions of strategic studies such as the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) and the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in order to proffer solutions to the nation’s strategic issues.

While welcoming the Commandant, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) stated that the NAF takes particular interest in the College, being one of the institutions saddled with the responsibility of producing the Nation’s strategic leaders. Air Marshal Abubakar charged the College to be innovative in addressing the Nation’s security challenges to ensure a stable country. The CAS also commended the College’s planned efforts to foster closer relationship with other institutions of strategic studies, which he noted would facilitate synergy, to the country’s advantage. Air Marshal Abubakar also urged the College to come up with papers, similar to the College’s traditional President’s papers, to address specific challenges facing respective Services. Furthermore, the CAS encouraged the College to organise short courses for Commanders and others in various leadership positions, in liaison with institutions such as the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), for enhanced capacity building. While assuring the Commandant of the NAF’s continuous support as might be required, Air Marshal Abubakar again congratulated the new Commandant of the NDC and wished him well in the new assignment.

TROOPS AMBUSH BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS RECOVER WEAPONS AND MOTORCYCLE

The Troops of 151 and 202 Battalions of 21 Brigade Nigerian Army, under Operation LAFIYA DOLE in furtherance of clearance and blockade Operation DEEP PUNCH II in separate but well-coordinated attacks simultaneously on Wednesday, 4th October 2017 at about 10:00am laid ambush on unsuspecting Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) along Firgi-Pulka road in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.

The Troops engaged the terrorists with a heavy fire causing the terrorists to abandon their weapons and flee in disarray with Gun Shot wounds.

In the first instance upon exploitation, troops recovered from the ambush site one General Multi-Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) and one motorcycle.

They also successfully discovered and safely detonated an unexploded ordnance. However, the troops followed with a hot pursuit, neutralized one terrorist and recovered 6 bundles of zinc.

In the same vein, crack troops of 22 Brigade of Operation LAFIYA DOLE displayed gallantry on 4th October at about 6:05pm by intercepting 3 Boko Haram terrorists disguised as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and trying to infiltrate a barrier. The vigilant troops engaged the suicide bombers forcing them to hastily detonate their suicide vest.

The troops recovered 2 AK-47 rifles, 2 magazines with several rounds of ammunition and amongst other items. The troops’ action saved what would have been another evil machination of BHTs ploy to utilize suicide bombing to inflict heavy casualties on soft targets.

NAF COMMISSIONS MULTI-PURPOSE FITNESS CENTRE IN NAF BASE YENAGOA

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commissioned a multi-purpose fitness centre at its base in Yenagoa, as part of efforts to promote the physical fitness of its personnel. The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who was represented by the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Mobility Command, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Steven Onuh, performed the commissioning. The representative of the CAS noted that the military is an institution, which undertakes a lot of physical activities and as such must be physically and mentally alert.

AVM Onuh expressed hope that the fitness centre would go a long way in boosting the morale of NAF personnel to achieve the desired level of preparedness to cope with the operational commitment of the NAF in the ever changing security environment. The AOC further stated that physical fitness is not only a prerequisite for operational preparedness but also a key determinant of the overall wellbeing of individuals. According to him, the NAF has embarked on massive promotion of physical and sporting activities by upgrading facilities and constructing well-equipped fitness centres across its bases in the country. He then reminded personnel of the responsibilities the security challenges in the country have imposed on the Armed Forces and therefore advised personnel to avail themselves of the advantage of the fitness centre.

In his remarks at the occasion, the Senior Air Staff Officer (SASO) of Mobility Command, AVM Awoyoola expressed appreciation to the CAS for providing the befitting fitness centre. According to him, upon assuming office, the AOC Mobility Command embarked on the establishment of a mini sports ground for the personnel aside from other sporting initiatives to encourage participation of personnel in sports. He added that the newly commissioned fitness centre would thus further encourage personnel in the Command to participate in sporting activities. He also stated that the Command’s decision to name the fitness centre after the CAS was in appreciation of his dynamic leadership style and his constant efforts towards infrastructural development in NAF Base Yenagoa. The new gymnasium has ultra modern body fitness equipment and table tennis boards, in addition to other facilities.
