Thanks op for this

But I think 95% of people that stole phones will wipe the phone and throw the sim instantly.

Say 100%

The thief must have been well known by the owner, or else how did the thief know the bank the Sim card owner uses?

How did they get to know his account number
How did they know his bank
If they transfer was to another bank account then BVN is there to help your friend.

If at all the story is true, the thief most be a very close friend/associate

gtb customer spotted... Did the writer include the name of the bank? Its not all banks that require last four digits of ATM card to set up ussd.

If what you say is true, these banks should be dropped, Not safe security-wise.

Good question. Maybe they will settle down to try ALL the USSD codes of ALL the banks. But then again, the thieves would also require a password to effect transfers or transactions from the stolen SIM. All these are impossible without the owner of the phone having compromised their PIN somehow. Heck, to even load airtime on a 3rd party number via USSD, as simple as that sounds, requires a PIN authentication.

To the above extent, I reckon the op created this scenario. However, nothing is impossible though. Thieves are getting more ingenious by the day.

All these took place between three hours, less than enough time for her to do a SIM Swap.

sim swap is done in less than 5mins pls

For USSD banking, no need for that.
For first bank just dial *894#
For fidelity *770#
All you need is the phone number tired to that bank account?
And for the token, no bo that same number them go send am go?

One should stick to online mobile APPS then.

BVN is a sham, if it was functional, Yahoo boys won't have been siphoning money.
See example, Ahmed James, sells Bitter kola in Kano Market and has an account with Keystone bank, Ahmed doesn't have much need for an account, so he gives the ATM to John, a con artist, John is in Lagos.
John uses Ahmed's account for money laundering and the related. Ahmed isnt aware.
Ahmed moves to Maiduguri to continue is Business.
Ahmed is a no body, he can't be tracked easily.
You get?

no u are very wrong.

he will tied and all the information the authorities need will be released.

He only needs to be trying different banks code one after the other. Also, he might have seen his bank SMS alerts.

Not true, Over the Phone Sim swap requests are no more.

Unless she stays at a stone throw distance to a Shop, 5mins is possible.

Depending on her distance to the closest Shop, She could have used 3hrs, Also dont forget possible Queue and the verifications.

No, you MUST have EITHER a 4 digit pin OR the last 4 digits on your atm card. No transaction can fly without these two

Good morning all,
I decided to share this based on a friend's experience .

Her phone got stolen, and she hasn't activated USSD Banking on her phone. Since the phone number is tired to her account , the criminal activated USSD mobile banking, created a new pin on the USSD banking and moved closed to N90,000 from her account. Worst part was she wasn't getting alerts since her phone was with the guy. All these took place between three hours, less than enough time for her to do a SIM Swap.

So we all should be careful, put a PIN on your SIM Card so whenever it is put in a new phone, or your phone is restarted, the user must login to the SIM with a pin.
With your SIM, the criminal can easily change your USSD banking, and withdraw your money.

Be careful all,
Be ware.

Your story is either incomplete or made up.

The only way to get Ahmed is to publish his BVN photo on newspapers with a monetary reward on his head.

Don't think you've used this service for first bank or Fidelity.
If you have, check the process of changing pin

To publish in news paper, who would bear the cost? Let's say the money is 100k, and to publish in news paper in a day is 50k, and there are 7 days a week. Isn't it now cheaper to forgo the money?

Ahmed perhaps doesn't even know his account number.
Ahmed could have been paid just to open an account.
Ahmed could killed later if they want to do serious fraud, all they need is an ATM card.
Bro, this is how ghost account come into existence. People go as far as forging ID and utility bills.

. u can't transfer money from one bank to another on first bank without the pin generated through the last five digits of ATM.. if the thief actually loaded the 90k as airtime, he must have transferred it to other lines, all these can be traced once the owner has retrieved the line.. jus visit the mobile telecom office and request for the transactions record...
Bro, say what you are sure of. Check FBN and Fidelity mobile banking, if you are a first timer, all it takes is create a PIN. If you are a returning customer, chose forgot pin and see the process.

Hi Bro. I do understand what you driving at, but from the narrative up here, Ahmed must have had a relationship with John, before giving out his ATM to him. Also, BVN is actually a database of KYC. Hence, as long as Bank Accounts are involved, BVN will surely take care of it,or atleast, provide the Authorities the much needed info
Lol.
If BVN was all serving, there wouldn't be cases of advance fee fraud done through ghost accounts . It's very easy to forge ID card (especially voters card) and utility bills and give one aboki to go an open account.
The police sef as not motivated, report case to them, you have to be paying them to investigate. Investigation that may yield nothing. T
